La rivista “Vicentini nel Mondo” dell’ “Associazione Vicentini nel Mondo”, nata nel 1953, per iniziativa della Camera di Commercio di Vicenza, nel suo 70° anniversario dalla fondazione, nella sezione “Storie” del numero di giugno 2023, ospita due intere pagine sulla vita missionaria del nostro confratello p. Siro Brunello, vicentino, nativo della Val Liona, oggi novantenne e membro della comunità saveriana di Abaetetuba, PA, Casa Xaveriana Dom João Gazza. Su richiesta dell’editore, p. Siro ha condiviso di suo pugno la sua esperienza di consacrazione missionaria, intitolandola “missionario e pilota”: “mi sento felice perché ho potuto annunciare il Vangelo visitando le comunità della foresta amazzonica… Nei comuni di Abaeté e Tomé-Açu c’erano allora solamente due strade. Tutto il resto si raggiungeva con lunghi viaggi a piedi o in canoa lungo i fiumi. Il nuovo vescovo di allora, Mons. Giovanni Gazza sx, fin dall’inizio sognava un piccolo aereo che potesse superare le immense distanze con rapidità. Ottenemmo un Piper dell’Aeroclub di Londrina-Paraná. A quel punto ci voleva un pilota e pensarono a me che avevo ottenuto il brevetto a Torino. L’areo era piccolino: due soli posti, ben stretti. Non aveva batteria, e il motore partiva ‘lanciando’ l’elica. Sul finestrino sinistro c’era l’acceleratore manuale mentre, tra le gambe si trovava la ‘cloche’ che, assieme ai pedali, determinava la direzione dell’areo. Nient’altro.

Qui in Amazzonia ho imparato ad abbracciare il mondo intero. Quante persone si sono fatte miei fratelli, amici che mi hanno donato pace e serenità. Molte volte hanno asciugato le mie lacrime, mi hanno fatto sorridere e mi hanno dato la gioia di vivere rafforzando la mia scelta di vita di missionario in questa terra benedetta dell’Amazzonia…” (Siro Brunello sx. 70° di Professione religiosa e missionaria, 12 settembre 2023)

The magazine Vicentini nel Mondo (Vicentini around the World) of the “Vicentini nel Mondo” Association was initiated in 1953 by the Chamber of Commerce of Vicenza. In the 70^th anniversary of its foundation, the magazines dedicates two full pages to the missionary life of our confrere Fr. Siro Brunello, a Vicentino from Val Liona, in the “stories” section of the June 2023 issue. Today, Fr. Siro is in his nineties and belongs to the Xaverian Community of Abaetetuba, PA, Casa Xaveriana Dom João Gazza. At the request of the magazine editor, Fr. Siro himself shared his experience of missionary consecration and wrote an article titled “missionary and pilot”: “I am happy because I could proclaim the Gospel while visiting the communities in the Amazon forest… In Abaeté and Tomé-Açu Townships there were only two roads. The remaining places could be reached by long journeys on foot or by canoe along the rivers. Since the beginning, the then new bishop Msgr. Giovanni Gazza s.x. dreamt of having a small airplane to overcome the immense distances quickly. We were able to obtain a Piper from the Air-club of Londrina-Paraná but, at that point, we needed also a pilot. They thought about me, for I had got a pilot’s license in Turin. Our airplane was small: only two and very narrow seats. It didn’t have batteries, so the engine had to be started by ‘throwing’ the propeller blade. The manual throttle was placed near the left window, while between the legs was the ‘joystick’ that, along with the pedals, determined the direction of the airplane. Nothing else.  

Here in Amazonia, I learned to embrace the entire world. How many people became my brothers, friends that gave me the gifts of peace and serenity!
