Un vescovo, otto sacerdoti, due religiosi non sacerdoti, un seminarista, un novizio e sette tra laici e laiche: sono 20 i “missionari” uccisi nel 2023. L’Agenzia Fides usa il termine “missionario” per tutti i battezzati, riconoscendo che in virtù del Battesimo ricevuto, ogni membro del popolo di Dio è diventato discepolo – missionario. La testimonianza di questi 20 missionari si aggiunge a quella delle 550 persone che, dal 2000 a oggi, hanno perso la vita in modo violento mentre svolgevano il servizio pastorale o donavano un annuncio di fede.

Secondo la ripartizione continentale, il numero più elevato di vittime si registra in Africa, dove sono stati uccisi 9 “missionari” (5 sacerdoti, 2 religiosi, un seminarista, un novizio). In America sono stati assassinati 6 operatori pastorali (un vescovo, 3 sacerdoti, 2 laiche), in Asia sono morti in modo violento 4 laici, mentre in Europa è stato ucciso un laico, Diego Valencia, sacrestano della parrocchia di Nuestra Señora de La Palma, ad Algeciras, in Spagna.

Spicca nella lista la presenza di sette fedeli laici, tra uomini e donne, impegnati nell’animazione delle comunità cristiane, nella catechesi, nella carità e nell’annuncio del Vangelo. Molti dei missionari hanno perso la vita in luoghi e situazioni di conflitto, uccisi da soldati di eserciti regolari, da miliziani di bande armate o da gruppi terroristi.

The witness given by these 20 missionaries adds up to the 550 persons who, since 2000, lost their life in a violent manner while carrying out their pastoral ministry or offering a faith witness.

Based on continents, the highest number of victims is recorded in Africa, where 9 “missionaries” (five priests, two religious, one seminarian, one novice) were killed; in America, 6 pastoral operators (one bishop, three priests, two lay women) were murdered; in Asia, 4 lay Christians died a violent death; while in Europe a lay man, Diego Valencia, sexton at Nuestra Señora de La Palma Parish, in Algeciras, Spain, was murdered. 

Conspicuous is the presence in the list of seven lay faithful, men and women involved in the leadership of Christian communities, in catechesis, in works of charity and the proclamation of the Gospel. Many of these missionaries lost their lives in places or situations of conflict: they were slain by soldiers of regular armies, or by militiamen of armed gangs or terrorist groups.
