La parrocchia di São Sebastião di Atalaia do Norte (AM) da tre anni circa è accompagnata dai Missionari saveriani (p. Alberto Panichella sx, p. Giuseppe Leoni sx e la laica Marta). In queste ultime settimane abbiamo vissuto insieme tutta l'angoscia delle ricerche dell'indigenista Bruno Araújo Pereira e del giornalista Dom Phillips. Il ritrovamento dei corpi di questi due difensori dell'ambiente e del territorio indigeno ha suscitato forte indignazione, dolore e sgomento. Nei primi giorni dopo la scomparsa, lo sforzo di ricerca da parte delle istituzioni è stato minimo. Le autorità federali, statali e locali inizialmente hanno taciuto. È seguito l'arresto dei sospetti. Uno di questi ha confessato e ha portato la polizia sul luogo in cui erano stati seppelliti i corpi. I corpi sono stati portati a Brasilia per l'autopsia e gli accertamenti.

I due erano andati a ispezionare le rive del fiume Ítaquai, dove si trovano le comunità lungo il fiume, da cui molto probabilmente sono iniziate le invasioni predatorie per saccheggiare il territorio indigeno vicino alla valle di Javari. La loro missione era anche per la difesa degli indigeni, in particolare i Corubo, di quella regione. Le invasioni di criminali nella Javari Valley, territorio delimitato, sono di vario tipo: mineraria, pesca, deforestazione e, soprattutto, traffico di droga dal Perù. Dom Philips stava raccogliendo dati ed elementi del posto per il suo libro "Come salvare l'Amazzonia" e aveva raccolto prove di attività illecite.

Lunedì 13 giugno gli indigeni presenti ad Atalaia hanno organizzato una marcia e una manifestazione di grande partecipazione. La marcia e gli interventi dei capi indigeni in piazza sono stati di solidarietà con le famiglie dei due amici, di lode, di gratitudine, ricordando in particolare l'impegno di Bruno. Ci sono state anche parole di forte denuncia per le invasioni e l'omissione e negligenza delle autorità. P. Giuseppe Leoni sx ha preso la parola al termine degli interventi, ringraziando gli indigeni per la lezione di unità, manifestazione pacifica e fraternità.

Il 16 giugno, festa del Corpus Domini, abbiamo fatto la processione in un clima di lutto, propria del Venerdì Santo, pregando in silenzio, accompagnati dalla musica strumentale. Nell’Eucaristia ho espresso solidarietà alle famiglie in lutto e a quelle dei presunti autori dell'omicidio. Chiediamo al Signore che questo martirio serva affinché la giustizia vinca per mezzo della pace in questo sofferente comune di Atalaia. (Alberto Panichella, sx)

Over the last three years, St Sebastian Parish in Atalaya do Norte (Amazon) has been served by the Xaverian Missionaries (Fr. Alberto Panichella s.x., Fr. Giuseppe Leoni s.x. and the lay missionary Marta). In recent weeks, we fully shared the anxiety that accompanied the search for indigenist Bruno Araújo Pereira and journalist Dom Phillips. The discovery of the bodies of these two defenders of the environment and indigenous territory arose strong indignation, sorrow and dismay. In the early days following their disappearance, the police exerted little effort to search for them. Initially, federal, state and local authorities kept silence on the case. Suspects were then arrested. One of them, who made a confession, led the police to the place where the two bodies had been buried. The bodies were then taken to Brasilia for the autopsy and further analysis. 

The two men had gone to inspect the shores of Ítaquai River, where different ‘river communities’ are located. Perhaps, it is from that area that predatory invasions of the indigenous territory near the Javari Valley began to take place. Their mission aimed at safeguarding the indigenous population of the region, in particular the Corubo people. Various types of criminal encroachment on the Javari Valley, which is a delimited territory, occur, such as illegal mining, fishing, logging and, above all, drug smuggling from Peru. Dom Phillips was collecting data and information about that area for a book, How to Save the Amazon, and had gathered evidence of criminal activities. 

On Monday, June 13^th, the indigenous groups present in Atalaya organised a march and a manifestation which attracted great participation. The march and speeches by the indigenous chiefs expressed solidarity with the families of these two friends, praise and gratitude, especially when recalling Bruno’s commitment. There were also words of strong condemnation of the invasions and of the authorities’ failure to intervene. Fr. Giuseppe Leoni s.x. took the floor at the end of the speeches; he thanked the indigenous people for their lesson of unity, and for conducting a peaceful and fraternal manifestation.

On June 16^th, solemnity of Corpus Christi, we marched in procession. The mood was that of mourning as on Holy Friday. We prayed in silence, accompanied by instrumental music. During the Eucharistic celebration, I expressed solidarity to the mourning families and to the families of the alleged perpetrators of the murders. Let us ask the Lord that this martyrdom may serve to the victory of justice through peace in this suffering township of Atalaya. (Alberto Panichella, s.x.)
