La celebrazione della beatificazione del martire di Goma, Repubblica Democratica del Congo, Floribert Bwana Chui Bin Kositi è stata un momento di incontro atteso da molte realtà ecclesiali in Congo, in Burundi, in Italia, in Francia, in Belgio...

Molti partecipanti hanno visto in questa beatificazione un forte appello rivolto a tutti a non cedere al male, alla corruzione economica, politica, sociale, a quella del cuore. La corruzione è  sentita come una malattia che non risparmia nessun strato sociale nella Repubblica Democratica del Congo. Essa imputridisce l’anima e i rapporti quotidiani a tutti i livelli. Le mani diventano sporche di soldi insanguinati. In questa celebrazione si è sentito forte la necessità di impegnarsi per il bene comune della patria congolese, contro ogni forma di tradimento e svendita.

Come il Signore Gesù, il giovane congolese Floribert, formato nella comunità di Sant’Egidio a Goma, ha saputo dire “no” alla corruzione e all’indifferenza dinanzi al male. Proclamandolo beato, la comunità cristiana ha voluto indicarlo come modello vero, autentico, luminoso per tutti i giovani congolesi e africani. Floribert è stato chiamato il “martire dell’onestà”, il “martire dell’integrità morale”. Papa Francesco, senza esitazione, ha affermato che Floribert “avrebbe potuto cedere alla corruzione, nessuno lo avrebbe saputo e ci avrebbe anche guadagnato, ma ha scelto di essere onesto, di dire no alla sporcizia della corruzione morale”. E per questo il nuovo Beato Floribert ha pagato con la sua vita.

Responsabile della Comunità di Sant’Egidio a Goma, RDC, e doganiere, Floribert fu ucciso nel 2007 per aver rifiutato di far passare carichi di cibo avariato, proteggendo così la salute dei più poveri.

Il beato Floribert nutriva una forte aspirazione ad un Congo in pace. Egli è un “maestro di speranza” per tanti giovani africani, “cui insegna a non lasciarsi vincere dal male, ma a vincere il male con il bene”, ma anche per tutti, perché nel suo esempio “tanti giovani di tutto il mondo possono scoprire la forza del bene e di fare il bene, resistendo alle lusinghe di una vita dominata dalla paura e dal denaro”. La comunità di Sant’Egidio di Goma, la comunità di Sant’Egidio di Roma, la comunità congolese che vive in Italia, la delegazione di Laici venuta da Goma, la mamma del martire Floribert, i suoi fratelli, i suoi compagni di scuola, gli amici, le autorità governative hanno partecipato molto attivamente.

Presenti anche molte comunità religiose e missionarie (maschili e femminili): Gesuiti, Missionari di Africa, le Suore Carmelitane, le Sorelle Saveriane, i Missionari Saveriani... Hanno partecipato anche vari vescovi congolesi e burundesi, alcuni dei quali nostri ospiti: il vescovo di Uvira e il vescovo emerito di Goma.

Ci piace ricordare qui che Floribert Bwana Chui è il quarto beato congolese dopo il beato Albert Joubert beatificato ad Uvira dal Cardinale Fridolin Ambongo Besungu, arcivescovo di Kinshasa, insieme ai nostri tre confratelli Saveriani, il 18 agosto 2024; il beato Isidore Bakanja, beatificato il 24 aprile 1994 da San Giovanni Paolo II durante il Sinodo dei Vescovi sull’Africa; e la prima ad essere beatificata in Congo, Marie-Clementine Anuarite Nengapeta, dallo stesso San Giovanni Paolo II, nel 1985, durante la sua visita apostolica in Zaïre.

La celebrazione di beatificazione si è tenuta nella Basilica di San Paolo fuori le Mura, Roma, Domenica pomeriggio, 15 giugno 2025, Solennità della Santissima Trinità, con la presenza anche del Cardinal Fridolin Ambongo Besungu, arcivescovo di Kinshasa, RDC. (Nicolas Chiza Hombo sx)

The beatification of Floribert Bwana Chui Bin Kositi, the martyr of Goma in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, was a moment of encounter eagerly awaited by many ecclesial communities from Congo, Burundi, Italy, France, Belgium…

Many in attendance viewed this beatification as a powerful call to resist evil—particularly the evils of economic, political, social, and moral corruption. In the Democratic Republic of the Congo, corruption is widely seen as a pervasive disease that spares no social class. It rots the soul and taints daily relationships at every level. Hands become stained with blood money. This celebration clearly echoed the urgent need to recommit to the common good of the Congolese homeland and to stand against all forms of betrayal and the selling out of one’s integrity.

Like the Lord Jesus, the young Congolese Floribert—formed within the Community of Sant’Egidio in Goma—knew how to say “no” to corruption and indifference in the face of evil. The Christian community wanted to hold him up as a true, authentic, and radiant model for all Congolese and African youth by proclaiming him Blessed. Floribert has been called the “martyr of honesty,” the “martyr of moral integrity.” Pope Francis, without hesitation, affirmed that Floribert “could have given in to corruption—no one would have known, and he even stood to gain from it—but he chose to be honest, to reject the filth of moral corruption.” For this, Floribert, the new blessed, paid with his life.

Floribert, who was both the local leader of the Community of Sant’Egidio in Goma (DRC) and a customs officer, was killed in 2007 for refusing to allow shipments of spoiled food to pass, thereby protecting the health of the poorest.

Blessed Floribert deeply longed for a peaceful Congo. He is a “teacher of hope” for many African youth, teaching them “not to be overcome by evil, but to overcome evil with good.” His example speaks to all, for through him, “many young people around the world can discover the power of good and the courage to do good, resisting the temptations of a life driven by fear and greed.” (from the homily at the Mass of Beatification, by Cardinal Marcello Semeraro, Prefect of the Dicastery for the Causes of Saints).

The Community of Sant’Egidio in Goma, the Sant’Egidio Community in Rome, the Congolese community living in Italy, a delegation of laypeople from Goma, the mother of the martyr Floribert, his brothers, his classmates, friends, and various government officials all participated actively and with devotion.

Numerous religious and missionary communities—both men and women—were also present: Jesuits, Missionaries of Africa, Carmelite Sisters, Xaverian Sisters, Xaverian Missionaries... Several bishops from Congo and Burundi participated, including some of our guests: the Bishop of Uvira and the Bishop Emeritus of Goma.

We would like to recall here that Floribert Bwana Chui is the fourth Congolese to be beatified, following Blessed Albert Joubert, beatified in Uvira by Cardinal Fridolin Ambongo Besungu, Archbishop of Kinshasa, along with three Xaverian missionary confreres, on August 18, 2024; Blessed Isidore Bakanja, beatified on April 24, 1994 by Saint John Paul II during the Synod of Bishops for Africa; and the first to be beatified on Congolese soil, Marie-Clementine Anuarite Nengapeta, also by Saint John Paul II, in 1985, during his apostolic visit to then-Zaïre.

The beatification ceremony took place on Sunday afternoon, June 15, 2025 - the Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity - at the Basilica of Saint Paul Outside the Walls in Rome. Cardinal Fridolin Ambongo Besungu, Archbishop of Kinshasa, DRC, was among the concelebrants. (Nicolas Chiza Hombo, s.x)
