Il 12 agosto 2026 la Congregazione di San Giuseppe di Zhengzhou (le Giuseppine) ha celebrato con gioia e gratitudine 110 anni di storia. Le sue origini risalgono al 1914, quando monsignor Luigi Calza (贾师谊Jiǎ Shī Yì) fondò la Congregazione. Dopo due anni di formazione, il 12 agosto 1916, le prime quattro giovani suore emisero i voti di castità, povertà e obbedienza, segnando ufficialmente l’inizio della vita religiosa della Congregazione.

Fin dagli inizi, le religiose si dedicarono al primo annuncio, alla testimonianza, alla catechesi, alla cura dei malati e al servizio dei più bisognosi, fino a raggiungere nel 1950 il numero di 130 suore. Tra il 1950 e il 1951, tuttavia, la Congregazione fu sciolta e le suore furono disperse. Furono anni di prova e di sofferenza, tuttavia molte di loro rimasero fedeli alla propria fede e alla propria vocazione, custodendo nel cuore una forte speranza per una ripartenza.

Con il progressivo allentamento della politica religiosa a partire dal 1979, iniziò una nuova tappa. Nel 1981, diciassette suore anziane si riunirono per chiedere il ritorno alla vita comunitaria e, nel 1989, la Congregazione poté finalmente riprendere ufficialmente la vita religiosa.

Scrive Suor Cecilia: “Monsignor Luigi Calza fu non solo il nostro fondatore, ma anche il più premuroso custode della Congregazione. Considerava ogni suora come un tesoro affidatogli da Dio, accompagnandola con paterna attenzione nella crescita spirituale e nella vita quotidiana. Per questo, i sacerdoti della diocesi chiamavano affettuosamente le religiose ‘le Giuseppine del Monsignor Calza’. Il suo esempio ci ha lasciato in eredità uno stile di vita fondato sull’umiltà, sulla carità e sulla semplicità: valori che ancora oggi guidano la nostra Congregazione.”

Questi 110 anni raccontano una storia di fede, perseveranza e carità, custodita attraverso generazioni di consacrate al Signore per il Vangelo. In questa giornata di festa, le Suore di San Giuseppe rendono grazie al Signore per il cammino percorso e guardano al futuro con rinnovata speranza e fiducia. On August 12, 2026, the Congregation of St Joseph of Zhengzhou (the Josephines) celebrated 110 years of history with joy and gratitude. Its origins date back to 1914, when Monsignor Luigi Calza (贾师谊 Jiǎ Shī Yì) founded the Congregation. After two years of formation, on August 12, 1916, the first four young sisters took their vows of chastity, poverty and obedience, officially marking the beginning of the Congregation’s religious life.

From the very beginning, the sisters devoted themselves to the initial proclamation of the Gospel, to witness, to catechesis, to caring for the sick and to serving the most needy, eventually reaching a total of 130 sisters by 1950. Between 1950 and 1951, however, the Congregation was dissolved and the sisters were dispersed. These were years of trial and suffering; nevertheless, many of them remained faithful to the gift of faith and their vocation, cherishing in their hearts a strong hope of a new beginning.

With the gradual relaxation of religious policies from 1979 onwards, a new chapter began. In 1981, seventeen elderly sisters came together to request a return to community life, and, in 1989, the Congregation was finally able to officially resume its religious life.

Sister Cecilia writes: “Monsignor Luigi Calza was not only our founder, but also the most caring custodian of the Congregation. He regarded every sister as a treasure entrusted to him by God, guiding her with fatherly care in her spiritual growth and daily life. For this reason, the priests of the diocese affectionately called the sisters ‘Monsignor Calza’s Josephines’. His example has left us a legacy of a way of life founded on humility, charity and simplicity: values that still guide our Congregation today.”

These 110 years tell a story of faith, perseverance and charity, preserved through generations of women consecrated to the Lord for the Gospel. On this day of celebration, the Sisters of St Joseph give thanks to the Lord for the journey they have made and look to the future with renewed hope and confidence.
