La nostra comunità di Vicenza era solita vedere nel mese di dicembre l’arrivo di qualche migliaio di visitatori per la mostra dei presepi, che da anni attirava scolaresche, istituti, parrocchie e famiglie con i loro bambini. Quest’anno la pandemia ha bloccato la visita e l’incontro con tante persone. Non solo. Non è stato possibile ospitare nei nostri saloni i gruppi abituali della casa (giovani per la missione, gruppo famiglie, amici dei Saveriani...) e i vari gruppi esterni per ritiri e incontri nel tempo dell’avvento. L’ attività si è limitata a incontri online, o di presenza - in qualche parrocchia - per celebrazioni e confessioni, ma non troppo, poiché il vescovo di Vicenza ha dato la possibilità di celebrazione penitenziali comunitarie.

Così la comunità, la più numerosa in Italia, dopo quella di Parma (17 confratelli), ha avuto la possibilità di stare più unita e vivere insieme il tempo dell’avvento. Non siamo certamente esemplari, ma ci sentiamo in cammino con fatica, generosità e fiducia.  Di notevole aiuto e conforto è stato il ritiro del 2 dicembre, animato via zoom, dove abbiamo approfondito insieme le tre parole care al nostro Fondatore: Osare, concepire e accarezzare.  Il ritiro si è prolungato con l ’adorazione eucaristica personale.

Il 3 dicembre, il parroco della nostra parrocchia, invitato, non è venuto per presiedere l’Eucaristia a causa del virus e a pranzo erano presenti Don Alessandro Buratti, sacerdote diocesano, amico dei missionari e il sig. Pietro Stella, che con il suo mercato, sostiene gratuitamente la comunità con frutta e verdura, come segno di presenza di numerose persone che ci accompagnano e alle quali dobbiamo riconoscenza.

Siamo stati fedelmente uniti soprattutto nella celebrazione della novena del Natale, pregata con l’inno e i canti tradizionali. Nella celebrazione del 24 sera e del 25 dicembre abbiamo invocato l’aurora di un giorno nuovo non secondo le nostre paure, ma secondo l’amore di Dio che si rivela nella piccolezza di un bambino.

Stiamo tutti bene, siamo ancora ben attenti a non essere raggiunti dal virus, che potrebbe fare danni a tutti noi.  Nei giorni di festa, il nostro confratello Antonio Ugalde, in assenza del personale, ci ha allietato con buone cose e tutti hanno contribuito ad abbellire ed ordinare la casa.

È per noi una costante preoccupazione ma anche un grande desiderio di trovare il modo di aiutare quanti tra di noi sono ammalati o sono in carrozzella o hanno difficoltà d’udito e di parola a gustare e celebrare insieme la festa.

Tentiamo ora di raccogliere i nostri pensieri su questo tempo d’avvento e di Natale, così vissuti nel silenzio e a volte con stanchezza. La distanza imposta e la mancanza di attività siano germoglio di speranza, di sogno, di avvenire. (Giuseppe Dovigo s.x.)

In the past years, in the month of December, our Community of Vicenza used to see the arrival of several thousands of visitors for the nativity scene exhibition.  For years it attracted schools, institutes, parishes and families with their children.  This year the pandemic has blocked the visit and meeting with many people.  Not only that!  It was not possible to host in our halls the usual groups  of the house (young people for mission service, family groups, friends of the Xaverians, etc…), as well as the various external groups who used to meet here preparing themselves for Advent and Christmas Season.  The activity was limited to online meetings, or limited presence in some of the parishes – for celebrations and confessions, but not too much, since the Bishop of Vicenza had given permission for community penitential celebrations.

Thus the Xaverian Community, the largest in Italy, after that of Parma (17 confreres), had the opportunity to be more united and live together the time of Advent.  We are certainly not exemplary, but we do feel we are on the good road with effort, generosity and trust.  Of considerable help and comfort was the Retreat of December 2^nd , animated by zoom, where we entered more deeply on the three words dear to our Founder: “Dare, Conceive, and Caress”. The Retreat was lengthened and enriched by providing time for personal Eucharistic Adoration.

On December 3^rd, the priest of the parish to which we belong, had been invited to preside at the Eucharist and share dinner with us, but could not be present due to the virus. Present were Rev. Alessandro Buratti, diocesan priest and great friend of the Xaverians and also Mr. Pietro Stella, who contributes, free of charge, all the fruits and vegetables needed for the community. They were representing all the many friends and benefactors who accompany us and to whom we are deeply grateful.

We were faithfully united especially in the celebration of the Christmas Novena; we prayed with the traditional songs.  On Christmas Eve and on Christmas Day we invoked the dawn of a new day not according to our fears,  but according to the love of God that is revealed in the smallness of a child.  We are all well.  We are still very careful not to be affected by the virus, which could harm all of us.  During these days of celebration, our confrere Antonio Ugalde, in the absence of the staff, gifted us with abundance of good things.  Everyone helped to beautify and order the house.  It is a constant concern and a great desire for all of us to find a way to help those of us who are sick or are on wheelchairs or have hearing and speaking difficulties to enjoy and celebrate the feast together.  Let us now try to gather our thoughts on this precious Season, lived in silence and, sometimes, with weariness.  The distance imposed and the lack of activity are the bud of hope, of dreams, of the future.  (Fr.
