“No, non è una guerra civile ma un’invasione vera e propria. Bisogna stare attenti a misurare le parole”, dice con forza e con dolore un missionario che vive nella Repubblica Democratica del Congo (Rdc) da molti anni. È una risposta al modo in cui viene spesso definita la situazione in cui si trova il Paese, ad un anno esatto da quando l’M23-Afc, ovvero le milizie sostenute dal Rwanda, altri eserciti stranieri, tra cui l’ADF (un’organizzazione islamista originaria dell’Uganda) e più di cento gruppi armati, hanno occupato la regione del Kivu.
Un anno vissuto di violenze, massacri di civili, sfollamenti, razzie, sparizioni forzate e arruolamento di bambini-soldato. La situazione in cui vive chi è rimasto a Goma è drammatica e avvolta nel silenzio dei media internazionali. La povertà, già diffusa, è fortemente aumentata. Centinaia di migliaia di persone sono sfollate in Burundi aggiungendosi ai circa 8 milioni di profughi causati da decenni di instabilità nell’est congolese. Si tratta di un territorio fragile e conteso in quanto ricco di miniere aurifere, coltan e altre risorse cruciali per la transizione energetica e digitale.

GOMA - DRC: SORROW AND “SILENCE”
No, this isn’t a civil war but a full-blown invasion. His description contradicts the common narrative of what is happening in this Country a year after the M23-Afc (militias supported by Rwanda), other foreign armies, including the ADF (an Islamist organisation originating in Uganda) and more than a hundred armed groups have occupied the Kivu region. It has been a year of violence, massacres of civilians, displacement, raids, forced disappearances and the recruitment of child soldiers. The living conditions of those who have remained in Goma are dramatic and shrouded in silence by international media. Poverty, that was already widespread, has now increased even more. Hundreds of thousands of people have been displaced in Burundi, adding to the approximately 8 million refugees caused by decades of instability in eastern Congo. This is a fragile and disputed territory as it is rich in gold mines, as well as coltan and other resources that are crucial for the energy and digital transition.
