“Nella vecchiaia non abbandonarmi” (Salmo 71)

“Nella vecchiaia non abbandonarmi”. È questo versetto del Salmo 71 il tema della IV Giornata mondiale dei nonni e degli anziani che verrà celebrata il prossimo 28 luglio, la domenica più vicina al 26 luglio, il giorno in cui la Chiesa festeggia la memoria liturgica dei santi Gioacchino e Anna, i nonni di Gesù. Un tema, rimarca il Dicastero per i laici, la famiglia e la vita, che “intende sottolineare come la solitudine sia, purtroppo, l’amara compagna della vita di tanti anziani che, spesso, sono vittime della cultura dello scarto”. Così nell’anno di preparazione al Giubileo, che papa Francesco ha scelto di dedicare alla preghiera, il tema della Giornata è tratto dal Salmo 71, che è l’invocazione di un anziano che ripercorre la sua storia di amicizia con Dio.

La celebrazione della Giornata vuole valorizzare i carismi dei nonni e degli anziani e il loro apporto alla vita della Chiesa, della Congregazione e della missione ad gentes, ad extra, ad vitam. Questa giornata vuole favorire l’impegno di ogni comunità nel costruire legami tra le generazioni e nel combattere la solitudine, consapevoli che - come afferma il secondo capitolo della Genesi - “Non è bene che l’uomo sia solo”.

‘Do not cast me off in my old age’: this quote from Psalm 71 is the theme of the upcoming IV World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly on July 28^th. It is the Sunday closest to July 26^th, the day in which the Church celebrates the liturgical feast of Jesus’ grandparents, Saints Joachim and Anne. As the Dicastery for Laity, Family and Life emphasises, this theme “is meant to call attention to the fact that, sadly, loneliness is the bitter lot in life of many elderly persons, so often the victims of the throw-away culture.” In this year of preparation for the Jubilee, which the Holy Father wishes to be devoted to prayer, the theme of the World Day is taken from Psalm 71, the plea of an elderly person who reflects on the story of his friendship with God.

This day celebration is meant to cherish the charisms of grandparents and the elderly, and the contribution they make to the life of the Church, of the congregation and the mission ad gentes, ad extra, ad vitam. The World Day seeks to support the efforts of every ecclesial community to forge bonds between the generations and to combat loneliness, in the awareness that – as Scripture states in the second chapter of Genesis – “It is not good for man to be alone”.
