Sembra che la natura si accanisca. Piove! Oggi 23 ottobre 2022, piove! La difficile stagione delle piogge di quest’anno è finita da metà settembre. Ma oggi piove. Difficile la stagione, perché la pioggia è stata abbondantissima con molti disastri nei campi e con difficoltà immense di circolazione, in un Paese già senza strade. Finalmente la stagione secca è arrivata, ma l’abbondanza di piogge in Camerun e Centrafrica (che alimentano i nostri due grandi fiumi, Logone e Chari) ha fatto che i bordi dei fiumi non siano stati capaci di contenere la massa d’acqua che transita verso il lago Ciad. Da diversi giorni la maggior parte dei quartieri di Ndjamena sono progressivamente invasi e migliaia di persone hanno dovuto abbandonare le abitazioni. È una scena di guerra: masserizie sulla testa, sulle moto, sulle biciclette, sulle camionette, sui camion, sui pulmini, sui carretti trainati dai cavalli, sulle piroghe… un vero esodo! Sono stati creati dei campi per gli alluvionati, con poca o nessuna organizzazione. Le condizioni sono estreme. Si teme il colera. Ripari di fortuna fatti di quattro stracci, di qualche nylon… E oggi piove su questi ripari di fortuna!

Come se non bastasse, stiamo sotterrando diverse decine di vittime delle repressioni poliziesche. La storia è lunga di più di trent’anni di governo militare. Dopo una messinscena di dialogo tra le diverse parti politiche e militari, i padroni di sempre hanno deciso di continuare ancora per due anni (?) il governo militare. La gente reagisce, è stufa, vuole un cambiamento. Scioperi a catena, manifestazioni in strada… Sangue e ancora sangue innocente ! I Vescovi hanno reagito con un comunicato molto duro, ma … quando il cane ha l’osso in bocca, non lo molla. Insomma, catastrofe su catastrofe. Il popolo soffre. Piove acqua e piove fuoco. Che Dio abbia pietà del Ciad. Come dare speranza a questa gente al limite della sopportazione ? È anche il nostro compito. Accompagnateci con l’amicizia e la solidarietà. (Armando Coletto sx) 

It seems as if nature is raging. It rains! Today, October 23^rd, 2022, it rains! This year’s difficult rainy season ended in mid-September, yet today it rains. It has been a difficult season because the rain fell very abundantly causing disasters in the fields and huge difficulties to transportations in this country without roads. Eventually, the dry season has arrived, but the abundant rains in Cameroon and Central African Republic (rains that feed into our two great rivers, Logone and Chari rivers) broke the banks of the rivers and thus the great mass of water that runs towards Lake Chad could not be contained. For several days, large part of Ndjamena’s neighbourhoods have been progressively flooded forcing thousands of people to abandon their homes. It is like a war scene: people leave by taking their belongings on top of their heads, on motorcycles, bicycles, jeeps, trucks, vans, small horse-drawn carts, canoes and the like: it is a real exodus! Camps have been set up for the flood victims, but with little or no organisation whatsoever! Living conditions are extreme. There are fears of cholera epidemics. People have built makeshift shelters with some rags, or pieces of nylon. And now, rain falls on these emergency coverings too!

As if this were not enough, we are burying dozens of victims of police repressions. This history parallels more than thirty years of military junta. After staging an apparent dialogue among different political and military parties, the usual bosses have decided to go on for another two years (?) of military government. People are reacting, are tired, want change. There are series of strikes, street manifestations, blood, and again innocent blood! The Bishops have reacted by issuing a tough communiqué, but once a dog bites a bone, it is not going to relinquish it. In few words, it is one catastrophe after the other. The people suffers and it pours down rain and fire. May God have mercy of Chad. How can we give hope to this people who are now at the end of their rope? This is challenging us too.
