MADRID – SPAGNA - “CONVIVIUM”: LETTERA DI PAPA LEONE XIV AI SACERDOTI DELL’ARCHIDIOCESI MADRILENA

In occasione dell’Assemblea Presbiterale “Convivium”, Papa Leone XVI scrive una lettera al presbiterio dell’Arcidiocesi di Madrid. Nella sua introduzione, prima ancora di proporre l’immagine della “cattedrale” per parlare del sacerdozio, afferma:
Il tempo che la Chiesa sta vivendo ci invita a fermarci insieme in una riflessione serena e onesta. Non tanto per limitarci a diagnosi immediate o alla gestione delle urgenze, ma per imparare a leggere con profondità il momento che stiamo vivendo, riconoscendo, alla luce della fede, le sfide e anche le possibilità che il Signore schiude dinanzi a noi. In questo cammino diventa sempre più necessario educare lo sguardo ed esercitarci nel discernimento, in modo da poter percepire con maggiore chiarezza ciò che Dio sta già operando, spesso in modo silenzioso e discreto, in mezzo a noi e alle nostre comunità.
Questa lettura del presente non può prescindere dal quadro culturale e sociale in cui oggi si vive e si esprime la fede. In molti ambienti constatiamo processi avanzati di secolarizzazione, una crescente polarizzazione nel discorso pubblico e la tendenza a ridurre la complessità della persona umana, interpretandola a partire da ideologie o categorie parziali e insufficienti. In tale contesto, la fede corre il rischio di essere strumentalizzata, banalizzata o relegata all’ambito dell’irrilevante, mentre si rafforzano forme di convivenza che prescindono da ogni riferimento trascendente.
A ciò si aggiunge un cambiamento culturale profondo che non può essere ignorato: la progressiva scomparsa di riferimenti comuni. Per molto tempo, il seme cristiano ha trovato un terreno in gran parte preparato, perché il linguaggio morale, i grandi interrogativi sul senso della vita e certe nozioni fondamentali erano, almeno in parte, condivisi. Oggi questo sostrato comune si è notevolmente indebolito. Molti dei presupposti concettuali che per secoli hanno favorito la trasmissione del messaggio cristiano hanno smesso di essere evidenti e, in non pochi casi, persino comprensibili. Il Vangelo non si confronta solo con l’indifferenza, ma anche con un orizzonte culturale diverso, in cui le parole non significano più lo stesso e dove il primo annuncio non si può dare per scontato…

MADRID, SPAIN – “CONVIVIUM”: POPE LEO XIV’S LETTER TO THE PRIESTS OF THE ARCHDIOCESE OF MADRID
On the occasion of the “Convivium” Presbytery Assembly, Pope Leo XIV wrote a letter to the clergy of the Archdiocese of Madrid. In the introduction of his letter, before pointing to the image of a ‘cathedral’ as a way to talk about priesthood, the Pope states:
During this time in the life of the Church, we are invited to pause and together reflect with serenity and honesty. It is not simply a question of immediate diagnoses or emergency management, rather to learn to examine in depth the moment we are living in, and recognise, in the light of faith, the challenges and possibilities the Lord opens up before us. In such a journey, it is increasingly necessary to train the way we gaze and practise discernment, so that we can perceive more clearly what God is already doing, often silently and discreetly, among us and in our communities.
This analysis of the present cannot ignore the cultural and social context in which faith is lived and expressed today.
In many areas, we notice advanced processes of secularism, growing polarisation in public discourse and a tendency to reduce the complexity of the human person, interpreting it on the basis of partial and insufficient ideologies or categories. Within this context, faith runs the risk of being exploited, trivialised or relegated to the realm of the irrelevant, while forms of coexistence that disregard any reference to the transcendence are reinforced.
Added to this is a profound cultural change that cannot be ignored: the gradual disappearance of common references. For a long time, the Christian seed found a largely prepared ground, because moral language, the great questions about the meaning of life and certain fundamental notions were, at least in part, shared. Today, this common ground has been greatly weakened. Many of the conceptual assumptions that for centuries favoured the transmission of the Christian message are no longer evident and, in many cases, are no longer even comprehensible. The Gospel is confronted not only with indifference, but also with a different cultural horizon, in which words no longer mean the same thing and where the first proclamation cannot be taken for granted…
