La Direzione Generale, ricevuta la richiesta fatta da tutti i Confratelli del Burundi di introdurre la Causa di beatificazione super martyrio dei nostri Confratelli P. Ottorino Maule, P. Aldo Marchiol e Catina Gubert, uccisi a Buyengero il 29 settembre 1995, per poter costituirsi Attore della Causa ha posto due condizioni: a) esplorare la consistenza della causa presso la Congregazione per le Cause dei Santi, b) avere il placet della Conferenza episcopale del Burundi. Ciò che è stato fatto: la Congregazione per le Cause dei Santi ha sottoposto il dossier presentato dal Postulatore a due periti di sua scelta i quali hanno dato parere positivo per istruire la Causa super martyrio. Il 7 Dicembre u.s. P. Mario Pulcini, Superiore Regionale del Burundi, e il Postulatore Generale, P. Guglielmo Camera, sono stati invitati a partecipare all’assemblea della Conferenze episcopale del Burundi a Gitega, dove hanno presentato ai Vescovi l’idea di introdurre la Causa. La Conferenza ha dato il suo pieno appoggio.

Nel frattempo però la Congregazione per le Cause dei Santi ha suggerito di istruire un’unica Causa super martyrio: assieme ai ‘nostri’, anche l’Abbè Michel Kayoya, famoso umanista, ucciso il 17 maggio 1972 a Gitega e presentato dal Vescovo di Gitega, e i quaranta seminaristi uccisi il 30 aprile 1997 nel loro Seminario di Buta, presentati dal Vescovo di Bururi. La Congregazione per la Cause dei Santi, dando il suggerimento, ha tenuto presente la difficoltà di istruire una Causa, dove non se ne sono mai state celebrate, in Burundi appunto. I Vescovi del Burundi, sempre a livello assembleare, hanno appoggiato pienamente l’idea e la nostra Direzione Generale ha quindi accettato di costituirsi Attore di quest’unica causa comprendente i sia i martiri di Buyengero, che l’Abbè Kayoya, che i Seminaristi.

La Causa verrà intitolata al primo e più famoso di questi martiri: l’Abbè Michel Kayoya, come suggerito dal Segretario della Congregazione dei Santi.

Vice-postulatore della Causa è stato nominato P. Gabriel Basuzwa, formatore e professore presso la nostra casa filosofica di formazione a Bujumbura.

Non possiamo che ringraziare il Signore per questa nuova benedizione per il Burundi e per l’intera nostra Famiglia Saveriana, che forse presto potrà annoverare tra i suoi figli alcuni martiri dichiarati tali dalla Chiesa.

The General Direction, having received the formal request of all the Confreres of Burundi to begin the process for the Beatification Super Martirio of our Confreres Fr. Ottorino Maule, Fr. Aldo Marchiol and Catina Gubert, martyred in Buyengero on September 29 – 1995, as to be ACTOR for the Cause of Beatification, has established two conditions: a) to explore the consistency of the cause in the thought of the Congregation for the Causes of Beatification of Saints,  b) to obtain the Placet from the Episcopal Conference of Burundi.  The following is what has been done: The Congregation for the Causes of Beatification of Saints has entrusted the dossier presented by the Postulator to two experts of its own choice, who have given a positive response favoring the introduction of the Cause super martirio.   On Dec. 7 – 2018, Fr. Mario Pulcini, Regional Superior of Burundi, and Fr. Guglielmo  Camera, General Postulator, were invited to participate  in the Assembly of the Episcopal Conference of Burundi in Gitega.  They presented the idea to the Bishops and it received their fullest approval.However, in the meantime, the Congregation for the Cause of Beatification of Saints suggested to join in one single process, together with ‘ours’ also the great humanist Abbè Michel Kayoya, martyred on May 17 – 1972 in Gitega, who had also been presented for beatification by the Bishop of Gitega, and also the forty seminarians killed on April 30 – 1997 in their seminary of Buta, cause presented by the Bishop of Bururi.   The Congregation for the Causes of Saints, giving their suggestion, kept in mind the difficulty of instituting one single Cause, where, like in Burundi, this has never before happened.  The Bishops of Burundi, in their Assembly, fully approved the idea.  Our General Direction has therefore accepted to constitute itself as Attore of this single Cause, dealing with our martyrs of Buyengero, Abbè Michel Kayoya, and the Seminarians of Buta.  The Cause will be given the title by the first and most known of these martyrs: Abbè Michel Kayoya, as it had been suggested by the Secretary of the Congregation for the Saints.Fr. Gabriel Basuzwa was named Vice-Postulator. He is Formator and professor in our House of Formation in Bujumbura.We do need to thank the good Lord for this new blessing for our Burundi and for the whole Xaverian Family, who, probably the near future, will number among its members some declared officially martyrs by the Church.
