In Mozambico, il tempo liturgico del Natale si colloca nel tempo meteorologico del grande caldo e della stagione delle piogge. Quest’anno, se il caldo è implacabile – ogni giorno siamo attorno ai 40° – le piogge si fanno attendere e sono incostanti. Il tempo del Natale si inserisce anche nel tempo delle ferie estive ed è un tempo non particolarmente sentito dalle nostre comunità cristiane. Come gli altri anni, cerchiamo di valorizzarne il significato, ad esempio con le confessioni nelle varie comunità e celebrando i battesimi dei bambini nell’Eucaristia del giorno di Natale nella comunità sede della parrocchia ed in quelle più vicine. Il giorno di Natale i battesimi sono stati 87 a Dondo, 18 a Charre e 9 a Sena.

È il quinto Natale di sofferenza, invece, per la popolazione di Cabo Delgado (circa mille km a nord da dove lavoriamo noi Saveriani), in particolare per i suoi 850.000 rifugiati. La guerriglia jihadista, che si intreccia con la povertà, l’ingiustizia sociale e gli investimenti astronomici delle multinazionali del gas, non accenna a diminuire. (Andrea Facchetti sx)

In Mozambique, the liturgical season of Christmas corresponds to the meteorological period of the great heat and the rainy season. This year, while the heat is relentless – every day we have about 40°C –, rains are late and intermittent. Christmas season coincides also with summer holiday, and it is not particularly felt by our Christian communities. As in previous years, we try to emphasise the value and meaning of this solemnity; for example, we celebrate the sacrament of reconciliation in the various communities and children’s baptisms during Christmas Mass in the community where the centre of the parish is located and in communities which are closer to the centre. On Christmas day, there were 87 baptisms in Dondo, 18 in Charre and 9 in Sena.

Instead, for the population of Cabo Delgado (at about 1000 km north from where we Xaverians work) this is the fifth Christmas of hardships, especially for the 850.000 refugees. The Jihadist guerrilla, poverty, social injustice, and huge investments of international petrochemical companies that exploit the country do not appear to slacken. (Andrea Facchetti s.x.)
