Giovedì 28 luglio 2022, nella chiesa parrocchiale di Orsaria, paesino della provincia di Udine, abbiamo ricordato con una celebrazione eucaristica i 40 anni dalla morte del nostro confratello p. Aurelio Basso sx, avvenuta a Centenario do Sul – Paranà BRASILE, il 30 luglio 1982. P. Aurelio è stato poi sepolto nella chiesa parrocchiale “Nossa Senhora das Graças”, che egli aveva costruito nei suoi primi anni di parroco.

P. Aurelio appartiene al gruppo dei primi quattro confratelli saveriani - 14 luglio 1953 - ad essere inviati in Brasile, dove giunsero, dopo 13 giorni con la nave “Giulio Cesare” il 27 luglio 1953.

Il parroco di Orsaria, don Nicola Degano, ci ha fatto la lieta sorpresa di concelebrare con noi e ha ringraziato tutti per l’intenso momento eucaristico vissuto da tutti i presenti. Con noi, confratelli saveriani, hanno partecipato i famigliari e parenti di p. Aurelio, e alcuni amici, che sono stati contenti anche per aver visto poi alcune foto missionarie del P. Aurelio, di cui abbiamo ripresentato il santino della sua prima Santa Messa, celebrata a Orsaria precisamente il 28 febbraio 1932: 90 anni fa! Siano rese grazie al Signore per questi momenti che ci avvicinano tanto nella amicizia tra noi …

Nell’omelia, infine, sono stati ricordati due pensieri di p. Aurelio: “Fin dalla terza ginnasio io domando al Signore la grazia di salvare anime e di morire martire e questo lo chiedo immancabilmente ogni giorno" (1937). E altrove scrive: “La mia missione fu quella di mettere il popolo e le famiglie in grazia di Dio e abituarle alla preghiera”. “Desidero morire in Brasile e penso che, mettendomi nel ricovero dei vecchi, qui, con le suore gerenti, con la possibilità, finché potrò di andare in macchina a dire la messa nelle varie cappelle, fare visite all'ospedale e all'educandato, ecc., potrò morire sul lavoro. È quello che spero e per cui prego" (1981).

Era suo desiderio vivissimo quello di vivere con uno stile umile in mezzo al suo popolo, perché era per lui “un grande segreto di vittoria”. (Lorenzo Mattiussi sx)

On Thursday, July 28^th, 2022, we celebrated a Mass in the parish church of Orsaria, a little village in the province of Udine, to commemorate the 40^th anniversary of the death of our confrere Fr. Aurelio Basso s.x. He died in Centenario do Sul, Paranà (Brazil), on July 30^th, 1982. Fr. Aurelio was buried in Nossa Senhora das Graças parish church, which he built in his early years as local pastor.

Fr. Aurelio was among the group of four Xaverians that for the first time were assigned to Brazil on July 14^th, 1953. They would reach their destination on July 27^th, 1953, that is, after 13 days spent of the Giulio Cesare Ship.

Against all odds, the pastor of Orsaria, Fr. Nicola Degano, managed to concelebrate with us and graciously expressed his gratitude for the intense Eucharistic moment we all experienced. Participants included Fr. Aurelio’s family, relatives and friends, as well as us, his Xaverian confreres. Participants were happy to inspect some missionary photos of Fr. Aurelio. We also reprinted his First Mass Holy Card – first Mass which he celebrated in Orsaria on February 28^th, 1932, that is, 90 years ago. Thanks be to the Lord for moments such as this, for they foster friendship among us.

Finally, during the homily, two of Fr. Aurelio’s thoughts were mentioned: “Since my third year in junior high school, I have been asking the Lord the grace to save souls and die a martyr. This is what I keep asking every single day” (1937). Elsewhere, he wrote: “I took it upon myself to keep my people and families in God’s grace and have them get used to praying. This was my mission. (…) My wish is to die in Brazil. I think that if manage to retire in the local home for the elderly, assisted by the nuns and, for as long as I can drive, with the possibility to celebrate mass in the various chapels, visit the sick at the hospital, visit the boarding school, etc., I may be able to die while working. This is my hope and what I am praying for” (1981).

His ardent desire was to live humbly among his people. For him, this was “a great secret for achieving victory” (Lorenzo Mattiussi s.x.)
