Prosegue la catechesi papale sullo zelo apostolico, lo zelo per l’annuncio del Vangelo.  Mercoledì 18 ottobre 2023, papa Francesco ha presentato la figura di san Charles de Foucauld il quale, “a partire dalla sua intensa esperienza di Dio, ha compiuto un cammino di trasformazione fino a sentirsi fratello di tutti.”

Citando la frase di San Charles “Ho perso il mio cuore per Gesù di Nazareth” , il papa ricorda che il primo passo per evangelizzare è aver Gesù dentro il cuore, è “perdere la testa” per Lui. Se ciò non avviene, difficilmente riusciamo a mostrarlo con la vita. Rischiamo invece di parlare di noi stessi, del nostro gruppo di appartenenza, di una morale o, peggio ancora, di un insieme di regole, ma non di Gesù, del suo amore, della sua misericordia. Credo che oggi sarebbe bello che ognuno di noi si domandi: Io, ho Gesù al centro del cuore? Ho perso un po’ la testa per Gesù?... E tante volte la nostra esistenza grida mondanità, grida tante cose stupide, cose strane, mentre San Charles dice: “No, tutta la nostra esistenza deve gridare il Vangelo”.

…(Charles) va nel deserto del Sahara, tra i non cristiani, e lì giunge come amico e fratello, portando la mitezza di Gesù-Eucarestia. Charles lascia che sia Gesù ad agire silenziosamente, convinto che la “vita eucaristica” evangelizzi. Crede infatti che Cristo è il primo evangelizzatore. Così sta in preghiera ai piedi di Gesù, davanti al tabernacolo, per una decina di ore al giorno, certo che la forza evangelizzatrice sta lì e sentendo che è Gesù a portarlo vicino a tanti fratelli lontani…

The papal catechesis on the apostolic zeal, zeal for the proclamation of the Gospel, continues. On Wednesday, October 18^th, 2023, Pope Francis presented the figure of St Charles de Foucauld who, “drawing upon his intense experience of God, made a journey of transformation towards feeling a brother to all.”

Citing the saying by St Charles “I have lost my heart to Jesus of Nazareth”, the Pope reminds that the first step in evangelizing is to have Jesus inside one’s heart; it is to “fall head over heels” for him. If this does not happen, we can hardly show it with our lives. Instead, we risk talking about ourselves, the group to which we belong, a morality or, even worse, a set of rules, but not about Jesus, his love, his mercy. I think that today it would be good for each one of us to ask him or herself: “Do I have Jesus at the centre of my heart?... And very often our existence shouts worldly things, it calls out many stupid things, strange things; on the contrary, St Charles says: “No, all our existence must shout the Gospel”.

… [Charles] goes to the Sahara Desert, among non-Christians, and he goes there as a friend and a brother, bearing the meekness of Jesus the Eucharist. Charles lets Jesus act silently, convinced that “Eucharistic life” evangelizes. Indeed, he believes that Christ is the first evangelizer. And so he remains in prayer at Jesus’ feet, before the Tabernacle, for a dozen hours a day, certain that the evangelizing power resides there and feeling that it is Jesus who brings him close to so many distant brothers. …
