Condividiamo una riflessione a cuore aperto sull’esperienza parrocchiale del nostro confratello p. Rino Benzoni a Kinshasa, RDC

Dopo otto anni come parroco della parrocchia di San Bernardo a Kinshasa - Rep. Dem. Congo, lascio la parrocchia nelle mani del nuovo parroco, il confratello burundese p. Arcade Irakiza, e torno, forse definitivamente, in Italia.

Sono stati anni di grande lavoro e di eventi straordinari, come il Covid e, soprattutto, la grande inondazione del 5 Aprile 2025 che ha distrutto cose e persone e che ha sparpagliato la comunità.

Non credo di essere stato un pastore innovativo. La fatica del quotidiano con la gestione anche di una grande scuola, non mi ha lasciato il tempo per delle novità. Inoltre, la pastorale diocesana a Kinshasa è talmente strutturata che è già difficile seguire tutti i gruppi, commissioni e movimenti che la costituiscono.

Faccio ancora fatica a fare un bilancio. Forse non sta nemmeno a me farlo. A chi me lo chiedesse posso comunque sottolineare alcune cose.

La prima, di cui ringrazio il Signore, è la fraternità con il confratello che il Signore mi ha messo accanto. Non credo che i fedeli ricorderanno le mie prediche e nemmeno le costruzioni e le opere, ma credo che almeno i più sensibili ricorderanno la facilità con cui abbiamo vissuto insieme, l’unità pur nella diversità di opinioni, l’affetto che ci ha unito. Credo che anche le nostre Costituzioni ne parlino come di una testimonianza decisiva…

Below our confrere Fr. Rino Benzoni shares a candid reflection on his parish experience in Kinshasa, DRC

After eight years as parish priest of San Bernardo Parish in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo, I am leaving the parish in the hands of the new parish priest, my confrere from Burundi, Fr. Arcade Irakiza, and returning, perhaps for good, to Italy.

These have been years of hard work and extraordinary events, such as Covid-19 and, above all, the great flood of April 5, 2025, which scattered the community, destroyed property, and caused loss of life.

I don't think that as a pastor, I have been an innovator. The daily grind and managing a large school left me no time for innovation. Moreover, the diocesan pastoral ministry in Kinshasa is so structured that it is already challenging to keep up with all the groups, commissions, and movements that comprise it.

I still struggle to take stock. Perhaps it is not even up to me to do so. However, for those who ask, I can highlight a few things.

The first, for which I thank the Lord, is the fraternity with the confrere the Lord has placed beside me. I don't think the faithful will remember my homilies or even the buildings and works done during the years. Yet, I believe that at least the most sensitive will remember the ease with which we lived together, the unity despite our differences of opinion, and the affection that united us. I believe that even our Constitutions speak of this as a crucial testimony. […]
