Lo Stato più giovane al mondo, il Sud Sudan, rischia di sprofondare ancora una volta nel baratro delle violenze senza fine. Da mesi ormai si fronteggiano le Forze di difesa del popolo del Sud Sudan (Sspdf) che fanno capo al presidente Salva Kiir e la milizia White Army, affiliata al Movimento di liberazione del popolo sudanese — in Opposizione (Spla-io), legato al primo vicepresidente Riek Machar. La repubblica, nata nel 2011 dopo decenni di scontri, ha già conosciuto l’orrore della guerra civile tra il 2013 e il 2018, spettro che ora sembra riprendere forma. Le elezioni previste per dicembre 2024 sono state rinviate alla fine del 2026 e potrebbero saltare gli accordi di pace siglati nel 2018. Per Christian Carlassare, vescovo di Bentiu, è necessario costruire la pace e ridare speranza alla popolazione: il Sud Sudan rimane tra i Paesi più poveri proprio perché è dimenticato e abbandonato dall’interesse e dal sostegno internazionale, mentre è vittima delle dinamiche mondiali di sfruttamento delle risorse, petrolio in primis al momento, ma anche altre risorse. The South Sudan People's Defense Forces (Sspdf), headed by President Salva Kiir, and the White Army militia, affiliated with the Sudan People's Liberation Movement-In Opposition (Spla-io), which is linked to Riek Machar's First Vice President, have been facing off for months by now. The republic, which was born in 2011 after decades of clashes, has already experienced the horrors of the civil war between 2013 and 2018. The spectre of civil war now seems to be taking shape again. The election scheduled for December 2024 has been postponed to the end of 2026, and the peace agreements signed in 2018 may fall apart. According to Christian Carlassare, Bishop of Bentiu, it is necessary to build peace and give back hope to the population: South Sudan keeps being one of the poorest Countries. Forgotten and abandoned by the international community, it is victim of world processes of resource exploitation, such as oil in the first place at the moment, but not only. This state of affairs is further aggravated by the fact that South Sudanese institutions are still poor and incapable of standing on the side of citizens by guaranteeing the rule of law.
