Il Sinodo è innanzitutto “un evento di preghiera e di ascolto che non coinvolge unicamente i membri dell’Assemblea sinodale, ma ogni battezzato, ogni Chiesa particolare” così si esprime il cardinale segretario generale Mario Grech in una lettera datata 12 settembre 2023 e inviata a tutti i vescovi ed eparchi del mondo.
La XVI Assemblea Generale Ordinaria del Sinodo dei Vescovi - "Per una chiesa sinodale: comunione, partecipazione, missione" - si svolgerà in due sessioni: la prima dal 4 al 29 ottobre 2023, la seconda nell’ottobre 2024.
La decisione di dividerlo in due tempi scaturisce dal desiderio che il tema della Chiesa sinodale possa essere oggetto di un discernimento prolungato da parte di tutta la Chiesa, e non solo dei membri dell'Assemblea sinodale.
È stato da poco pubblicato l'Instrumentum Laboris per la prima sessione. La prima parte del Documento è dedicata alle caratteristiche di una Chiesa sinodale e la seconda parte è dedicata a tre questioni prioritarie per la Chiesa sinodale, ossia 1) comunione, 2) missione e 3) partecipazione.
Nel Documento, infine, sono presenti anche le schede di lavoro per l'Assemblea sinodale, pensate come strumento di lavoro per affrontare le tre questioni prioritarie enunciate in precedenza. I temi delle schede sono 1) Una comunione che si irradia; 2) Corresponsabili nella missione e Partecipazione; 3) compiti di responsabilità e autorità.
Dopo tre settimane di preghiera, riflessione e conversione (04-29 ottobre 2023), l’assemblea approverà un documento di sintesi, che sarà pubblico, ma non sarà il documento finale, in quanto si tratta della prima sessione, mentre la seconda si terrà il prossimo anno (ottobre 2024).

The Synond is above all “an event of prayer and listening which does not only involve the members of the synodal Assembly, but every baptised, every local Church”: this is how the General Secretary, Card. Mario Grech, expresses himself in a letter dated September 12th, 2023, which has been sent to all the bishops and eparches of the world.
The XVI General Ordinary Assembly of the Synod of Bishop - "For a synodal Church: communion, participation and mission" – will be held in two sessions: the first from October 4th to 29th, 2023; the second in October 2024.
The decision to divide the synod into two sessions follows the wish that the theme of the Synodal Church may be object of prolonged discernment by the entire Church, not only the members of the Synodal Assembly.
The Instrumentum Laboris for the first session has been published. The first part of this Document is dedicated to the features of a synodal Church, while the second part is dedicated to three priority issues for the synodal Church, that is, 1) communion, 2) mission and 3) participation.
Moreover, the Document includes worksheets for the synodal assembly, which are thought as a working tool to face the three priority issues mentioned above. The themes of the worksheets are 1) A communion that radiates; 2) Co-responsibility in Mission; 3) Participation, governance and authority.
After three weeks of prayer, reflection and conversion (October 4th-29th, 2023), the assembly will approve a summary document that shall be made public, but which will not be the final document for it is the result of the first session; the second session will be held next year (October 2024).
