Il sinodo dei vescovi sulla sinodalità (“Per una Chiesa sinodale: comunione, partecipazione, missione”) si è appena concluso dopo un percorso di tre anni (2021-2024). Non è facile fare un bilancio a caldo di un evento caratterizzato da una grande complessità. Si può però cercare di capire cosa è accaduto.

Il primo dato è che questo sinodo in particolare, tra i quattro indetti da Francesco, va inquadrato non solo nell’ottica della conversione pastorale ma in un percorso di riforma delle strutture della Chiesa, avviata con la riforma della Curia Romana (v. Costituzione “Predicate evangelium”).

La grande consultazione iniziale, da un lato, con il suo metodo della circolarità, base-vertici-base (v. Assemblee continentali), ha fatto emergere e confermato l’individuazione dei problemi da parte del popolo di Dio; dall’altro, si è dovuto constatare che un buon numero di vescovi e gran parte dei presbiteri non ha risposto con convinzione e partecipazione a questo cammino sinodale.

Ancora, le diverse questioni poste sul tappeto, molte delle quali divisive, (diaconato femminile, organismi di partecipazione, poteri delle Conferenze episcopali, riforma del Diritto canonico, …) ripresentate nel “Documento di sintesi” della prima sessione (2023) non potendo essere ragionevolmente affrontate e approfondite nella seconda sessione di quest’anno, sono state rimandate a 10 gruppi di studio che relazioneranno al papa entro il giugno del prossimo anno.

Infine, dopo un mese di lavori questa seconda assemblea, che doveva affrontare le questioni strutturali per dare corpo ad un modello di Chiesa sinodale (potere delle conferenze episcopali, rapporto tra Roma e le chiese locali, esercizio del primato, poteri dei vari Consigli: pastorali, presbiterali, affari economici, …) ha consegnato al Vescovo di Roma un documento molto aperto e che richiederà ulteriori approfondimenti.

Francesco, nel discorso di chiusura ne ha disposto la pubblicazione immediata comunicando che non farà un’Esortazione apostolica post-sinodale, perché ha detto “c’è bisogno di tempo, per giungere a scelte che coinvolgono la Chiesa tutta. Io, allora, continuerò ad ascoltare i Vescovi e le Chiese affidate a loro”.

THE SYNOD CONTINUES

The synod of bishops on synodality (For a Synodal Church: Communion, Participation, and Mission) has just ended after a journey of three years (2021-2024). It is too early to evaluate an event characterised by great complexity. What we can do is trying to understand what took place.

A first fact is that this particular synod, among the four ones summoned by Francis, must be viewed not only as part of a pastoral conversion, but also as a reform of the Church’s structure initiated with the reform of the Roman Curia (see Constitution “Predicate evangelium”).

On the one hand, through its great initial consultation characterised by a circular approach of base-top-base (see the continental Assemblies), the people of God has brought to the surface and pointed out a series of problems; on the other, one could observe that a good number of bishops and large part of the clergy did not answer and participated wholeheartedly in the synodal journey.

Moreover, various issues on the table, including many divisive ones (deaconate to women, agencies for participation, the power of Bishop Conferences, the reform of Canon Law, etc.) that were re-introduced in the Synod Synthesis Report of the first session (2023) and which could reasonably be dealt with and deepened in the second session of this year, have been delegated to ten study groups. These will report to the Pope within June next year.

Finally, after carrying out a month-long work, this second assembly, which was supposed to deal with structural issues so as to shape a model of synodal Church (power of the Bishop Conferences, relationship between Rome and local churches, exercise of the primacy, power of the various Councils – i.e., pastoral C., presbyteral C., financial C., etc.), handed in to the Bishop of Rome a very “open” document that will require further study.

In his closing address, Francis ordered its immediate publication while informing that he is not going to write a post-synodal apostolic exhortation because, as he said, “we need time in order to come to choices that affect the entire Church. I, therefore, will continue listening to the Bishops and the Churches entrusted to them.” Hence, the Synod continues.
