A Holliston (USA), l’11.12.2013, verso le 01,45 locali, è morto P. Girardo Furlan. Il mattino del giorno precedente, durante la quotidiana visita allo Shrine, era caduto sbattendo pesantemente la testa. Portato all’ospedale già in coma, non si è più ripreso. Aveva 82 anni compiuti, essendo nato a Olmo di Creazzo (Vicenza – Italia) il 22.05.1931.
P. Gerardo ricordava perfettamente gli inizi della sua vocazione: “Nella giornata Pro Missioni del 1946, ho sentito in me la spinta decisiva di farmi missionario. Il giorno dopo ho manifestato la mia decisione al Parroco il quale mi disse che forse non potevo diventare sacerdote perché troppo vecchio (avevo 15 anni e avevo fatto i tre anni di Avviamento-Commerciale). Io fui contento lo stesso pur di farmi missionario” (Esame vocazione).
Il 10.12.1946 entrò tra i Saveriani a Vicenza. Fu poi a Grumone (IV Ginnasio), Zelarino (V Ginnasio), S. Pietro in Vincoli (anno di Noviziato e Prima Professione il 12.10.1951), Desio (I Liceo). “È amato da tutti per la sua generosità e per il suo spirito di sacrificio – è scritto nella presentazione al Noviziato – molto criterio pratico, pietà seria; entusiasta della vocazione. È un elemento prezioso per molte cose”.
Nel 1952 fu inviato con altri studenti negli Stati Uniti in vista del consolidamento della presenza saveriana in quel Paese. Fu quindi a Holliston per il biennio filosofico e tre anni di teologia (52-57). Passò poi a Franklin dove concluse gli studi teologici, e dove il 22.03.1958 fu ordinato Presbitero. Con una presentazione ‘molto favorevole’: “Aperto e gioviale, facile ad affarsi con tutti. Ama la Congregazione; si interessa dei confratelli e li aiuta come meglio può, con umiltà e semplicità”.
Concluso l’iter formativo, rimase nella comunità di Franklin con l’incarico di economo (58-67) e di Vicerettore (59-61). Lavorando sodo e coadiuvato dai confratelli riuscì a costituire un gruppo di professionisti amici che consultava nelle varie circostanze, e una rete di benefattori per cui la comunità fu in grado di costruire una nuova sede dell’istituto.
Nel 1967 fu destinato all’Indonesia. Svolse la sua attività a Pekambaru ‘con le tre amate stazioni’ e a Padang viceparroco della cattedrale e insegnante.
Nel 1973 fu ridestinato agli USA. “Non ho opposto molte difficoltà ai Superiori per lo spostamento - scrisse a P. Zannoni -solo temo di non portare un gran contributo alla Provincia. Cercherò di porre meno ostacoli possibile al disegno di Dio nei miei riguardi”. Servì la Regione come Economo della comunità di Holliston (73-80).
Dal 1980 al 2000 lavorò in Sierra Leone: viceparroco e insegnante a Kabala (80-83), viceparroco e parroco a Magburaka (84-93), parroco a Lunsar (93-97) e infine a Water- loo (97-99).
Fu un missionario instancabile e che procedeva con metodo. “A Magburaka, per esempio – ricorda P. Piero Lazzarini - seppe mettere in atto una rete capillare di circa 15 comunità nella periferia della cittadina e nei villaggi circostanti. Quasi tutte avevano una chiesa in muratura, un catechista responsabile, incontri e visite regolari di un Padre con confessioni, S. Messa e catechesi. Ogni comunità pregava insieme tutti i giorni sotto la direzione di un prayer leader; un catechista istruiva regolarmente i catecumeni. Alla domenica poi le comunità partecipavano all’eucarestia nella chiesa parrocchiale e al pomeriggio i catechisti (una ventina) si incontravano col parroco: si faceva lettura del vangelo della domenica con riflessione partecipata, preghiera, poi scambio e relazioni sul lavoro, problemi, progressi, suggerimenti nelle varie comunità”.
Nel 2000 rientrò negli USA, a Holliston: addetto alla casa e all’assistenza spirituale delle suore ospiti del centro diocesano di riposo e degli anziani residenti in quello che era stato il nostro seminario minore.
“Un fedele lavoratore del Vangelo – è la testimonianza dei PP. Maloney e Matteucig - Un confratello sempre attivo, generoso, sereno, compassionevole e instancabile.
Il suo funerale è stato un trionfo, la chiesa piena a Holliston, e lunghe file di gente”.

Fr. Girardo Furlan died on 11 December 2013, in Holliston (USA). On the morning of that day, during his daily visit to the Shrine, he fell and suffered a severe blow to the head. He was taken to hospital in a coma from which he never regained consciousness. Born in Olmo di Creazzo (Vicenza, Italy), on 22 May 1931, he was 82 years old.
He joined the Xaverians in Vicenza on 10 December 1946 at the age of 15. He continued his school studies at Grumone and Zelarino before moving to S. Pietro in Vincoli for Novitiate. After making his First Profession on 12 October 1951), he moved to Desio for further study. The report presenting him to Novitiate said: “He is loved by all for his generosity and his spirit of sacrifice; he possesses common sense and a serious piety; he is enthusiastic about his vocation and in many ways is a valuable asset”.
In 1952 he was sent to the United States of America with other students in view of consolidating the Xaverian presence in that country. He lived in Holliston for the two years of philosophy and three years of theology (1952-57). He then moved to Franklin where he concluded his theology studies and was ordained priest there on 22 March 1958. He was presented with a glowing report: “He is open and jovial and relates easily to everyone. He loves the Congregation; he takes an interest in the confreres and helps them as best he can, with humility and simplicity”.
At the end of his formation journey, he remained in the community of Franklin as treasurer (1958-67) and vice-rector (1959-61). Through hard work, and with the help of the confreres, he managed to form a group of professional friends he consulted on various matters; he also built a network of benefactors which helped the community to build a new house.
In 1967 he was assigned to Indonesia. He worked in Pekambaru and Padang as assi- stant priest in the Cathedral and as a teacher.
In 1973 he was assigned again to the USA. In a letter to Fr. Zannoni, he wrote: “I did not oppose the Superiors in any way over this transfer; my only concern is that I might not make a great contribution to the Province. I will try not to hinder God’s plan for me in any way”. He served the Region as treasurer of the community of Holliston (1973-80).
From 1980 until 2000 he worked in Sierra Leone as assistant priest and teacher at Ka- bala (1980-83); assistant priest and parish priest at Magburaka (1984-93); parish priest at Lunsar (1993-97) and, finally, at Waterloo (1997-99).
He was a tireless missionary who worked in a methodical manner. In the words of Fr. P. Lazzarini: “At Magburaka, for example, he set up a widespread network of about 15 communities on the outskirts of the town and in the surrounding villages. Almost all of them had their own stone church, a catechist in charge, meetings and regular visits of a priest for confessions, Mass and catechesis. Every community prayed together daily under the guidance of a prayer leader; a catechist instructed the catechumens regularly. On Sunday the communities participated in the Eucharist in the parish church and, in the afternoon, the catechists (about twenty) met with the parish priest: they read the Sunday Gospel with a shared reflection, prayer, followed by an exchange and reports on the work, problems, progress and suggestions in the various communities”.
In 2000 he returned to the USA; he lived in the Holliston community and gave spiritual assistance to the nuns in the diocesan retirement home and to the elderly residents of what used to be our minor seminary.
Fr. Maloney and Matteucig remember him as “a faithful worker of the Gospel and a confrere who was always active, generous, serene, compassionate and tireless.
His funeral was a triumph and the church in Holliston was packed with people”.
