Nacque a Malandriano di S. Lazzaro Parmense il 16.IV.1893. Per completare le Elementari il padre lo iscrisse presso i Fratelli delle Scuole Cristiane di Parma e per le Ginnasiali presso i Salesiani. Alla fine della V° Ginnasio che aveva frequentato nel Seminario Diocesano, l'11.IX.1910 entrava nell'Istituto Saveriano accoltovi da Mons. Conforti, per il quale serberà estrema figliolanza.
Scoppiata la prima guerra mondiale, fu chiamato alle armi e addetto all'ospedale da campo 221. In quella situazione, nella Chiesa di S. Rocco a Udine il 9.VII.1915 e presente il Confratello militare P. Sartori, emise la Professione religiosa. Divenuto Ufficiale dell'Esercito e Sottotenente dei Bersaglieri, fu mandato al fronte sul monte Vodice, dove nel maggio 1917 riportò una ferita al volto che lo obbligò al rientro per cure, prima a Milano, quindi a Napoli.
Completati gli Studi Teologici, fu ordinato Sacerdote il 14.IV.1919 ed assegnato prima a Parma in aiuto a P. Bonardi quindi a Vicenza.
Partì per la Cina col piroscafo "Aquileia" il 21.IV.1921 e fu collaboratore nelle Stazioni Missionarie di Hsiang-hsieng, di Yen-sce-hsien sempre in mezzo alle scorrerie dei briganti che imperversavano nell'Honan. Due anni più tardi veniva nominato Rettore del Seminario di Cheng-chow che curò con entusiasmo, arrivando a maturare l'idea di un Noviziato Saveriano: iniziativa che non poté realizzare e ciò gli procurò sofferenza se non addirittura... scoraggiamento.
Venuto in Italia come Delegato Capitolare, nel Luglio 1932 ritornava in Cina nominato Superiore Religioso. Iniziò così quell'attività che lo impegnerà per tutto il resto della sua vita: assistenza e formazione diretta dei suoi Confratelli. Si dimostrò l'uomo del momento "... fece molto e molto bene" si dirà di lui.
Rientrato in Italia per il Capitolo del 1937, fu nominato Consultore Generale e contemporaneamente Parroco del Tempio del S. Cuore a Parma; per alcuni anni ebbe anche l'incarico di Segretario Generale dell'Istituto. Il suo ministero in Parrocchia fece perno sulla visita alle famiglie e sulla catechesi ai fanciulli.
Il 3.IX.1946 veniva eletto Superiore Generale. Dopo uno smarrimento iniziale, egli seppe essere padre per i suoi fratelli e stratega per l'espansione dell'Istituto. Pure caratterizzandosi come tipo mansueto e portato all'interiorità, sotto la sua guida l'Istituto avrà l'espansione massima giungendo ad accettare dalla S. Sede ben 5 nuovi campi di Missione, in seguito all'espulsione di tutti i Saveriani dalla Cina.
Al di là della organizzazione egli si premurò di un dialogo continuo e profondo con i propri fratelli e figli. Per tale stretto contatto egli fece nascere i famosi "Fogli Rosa" (detti così dal colore della carta adoperata) per mandare notizie, raccomandazioni e comunicazioni. Essi, tuttavia, non sempre furono accolti bene dai Confratelli: alcuni vi videro insistenze ripetute su aspetti marginali della vita religiosa o l'applicazione scritta di una personalità troppo regolare e metodica. Le 10 Lettere Circolari tuttavia furono autentiche pietre angolari per la fisionomia saveriana nelle situazioni nuove che il periodo postbellico creava.
Concluso il Generalato, egli fu Maestro dei Novizi Saveriani nella prosperosa Casa di S. Pietro in Vincoli: in quei 10 anni egli poté manifestare tutta la sua indole di formatore alla vita comunitaria, alla spiritualità missionaria e soprattutto alla "saverianità". Scrisse diversi "strumenti" per porre in mano ai Novizi mezzi adatti a conoscere lo spirito della vita religiosa come sostegno dell'azione missionaria, per fare loro conoscere ed amare il Fondatore e la Famiglia Saveriana. Risalgono a questi anni la raccolta e la pubblicazione interna all'Istituto di Lettere Circolari del Fondatore, di testimonianze della Storia Saveriana, come pure il classico "Catechismo dei Voti del Saveriano".
Nell'autunno 1966 cessò di essere Maestro dei Novizi: per 4 anni a Parma e poi per 6 anni a Roma si mise a completa disposizione del Superiore Generale (suo nipote Mons. Gianni Gazza).
Morì il 21.VII. 1977.

Fr. Giovanni Gazza died at the Mother House in Parma on July 21 1977, as a result of various illnesses. He was 84 years old, born at Malandriano di S. Lazzaro Parmense (Parma) on April 16 1893.
Fr. Giovanni entered the Xaverians at Parma on Sept. 11 1910, welcomed by Msgr. Conforti, after years of studies at the Christian Brothers School, at the Salerians, and at the diocesan Seminary of Parma. At the beginning of World War I, he was called to serve the country as a nurse in a Hospital. In the midst of the war, he professed religious vows at the Church of S. Rocco at Udine on July 9 1915 in the presence of his military confrere P. Sartori. As an officer and Lieutenant of the army, he fought on mount Vodice where he received a scar in the face on May 1917. He spent some time on sick leave at Milan, and then at Naples. At the end of his theology, he was ordained priest on Apr. 14 1919 and assigned to work at Parma with Fr. Bonardi, and then at Vicenza.
On Apr. 21 1921, he left for China with the boat “Aquileia” and was collaborator in the missionary posts of Hsiang-hsieng, of Yen-sce-hsien, in the midst of brigand groups of Honan. After two years, he was named rector of the Seminary of Cheng-chow which he did with enthusiasm, to the point of envisioning the idea of starting a Xaverian Novitiate there, something that he could not actually accomplish.
Sent to Italy as Chapter Delegate, he returned to China on July 1932 as Regional Superior. This marked the beginning of his service to the confreres which will be an essential part of his life: assistance and direct formation of the confreres, as the right man for the right moment.
He took part at the Chapter in 1937, where he was named General Councilor and Parish priest of the Temple of Sacred Heart at Parma; for some years he was also General Secretary of the Congregation. His parish ministry sprang from his family visits and catechism to children.
On Sept. 3 1946 Fr. Giovanni Gazza was elected Superior General. After an initial moment of loss, he was able to be a Father for his confreres and a strategist in the expansion of the Xaverians. Even though prone to interior life and mild manners, the Xaverians opened five mission countries under his leadership, following the entire expulsion of the China missionaries. Beyond the organizational aspect, Fr. Gazza kept up a continuous dialogue with his confreres and sons, through the famous “pink sheets” which carried news, recommendations and communications from the General Direction. These “pink” color papers were not always welcomed by confreres, for some people saw in them repeated marginal aspects of the religious life, or carried too regular and methodic applications according to his personality. His 10 Circular Letters were authentic foundation stones for the Xaverians who were faced with new situations following the War.
At the end of his Generalate, he was named Master of Novices at S. Pietro in Vincoli where he spent 10 years as formator of community life, of missionary spirituality and most of all, of his “Xaverian Life.” He wrote many “instruments” for the Novices which provided useful tools for the knowledge of the spirit of religious life as a support of missionary action, and in order to show the life and gestures of the Founder and the Xaverian family. During these years, he was able to edit a book on the Circular Letters of the Founder, personal witnesses of Xaverian history, and the classic “Catechism for Vows of the Xaverian.”
He resigned from his post of Novice Master in the Fall of 1966, and spent the next 4 years at Parma, and then 6 more years in Rome, together with the new General Superior, his nephew Fr. Gianni Gazza. He died of old age, and various illnesses on July 21 1977 at Parma.
