P. Giuseppe Novati è deceduto improvvisamente in Brasile il 4.II.1981. Si era recato con altri tre Confratelli a Santos (Brasile), per una giornata di distensione e mentre si prendeva un bagno, fu colto da improvviso malore. Quando i bagnini lo trassero a riva non c'era più nulla da fare. Alle esequie, oltre ai numerosi Confratelli e tanti altri che lo conoscevano, era presente anche il Card. Paolo Evaristo Arns, Arcivescovo di S. Paolo.
P. Peppino Novati era nato a Cisano Bergamasco 1'11.XI.1928. Entrato tra i Saveriani direttamente in Noviziato nel 1947, emise la prima Professione religioso-missionaria il 18.X.1948. Ultimati gli studi teologici a Piacenza, fu ordinato Sacerdote il 29.III.1952.
Destinato alla Casa Saveriana di Zelarino (VE), mise subito a frutto il suo entusiasmo nell'animazione missionaria e vocazionale con il ministero, con l'insegnamento e con il servizio di Economo.
A 32 anni, il 16.VIII.1960 poté finalmente partire per la Missione Saveriana di Africa, l'ex Congo belga (attuale Zaire). Dopo una breve sosta a Mwenga, si impegna profondamente nell'apostolato nella Missione di Kamituga, portando anche il peso dei disordini politici di quel periodo.
Dopo un breve periodo trascorso in Italia ed in Belgio, nel 1967 fu destinato alla Missione del Brasile Nord (Amazzonia); opera nelle due zone di Belèm e Tomè-Acù. Nel 1971 resse la Comunità Saveriana come Superiore Regionale.
Nel 1974 fu richiamato in Italia e gli venne affidato l'incarico di Segretario Nazionale di "Mani tese", organismo di appoggio e sostegno dei Paesi in via di sviluppo.
Nel 1977, riavuto il "Visa" poté ritornare in Brasile Sud. A S. Paolo si adoperò nell'animazione missionaria della Chiesa brasiliana, stimolando pure la Comunità Saveriana a scelte ed impegni consoni con il proprio carisma missionario.
Il Signore premiò l'ardore missionario del suo spirito con lo splendore della sua visione.

Fr. Giuseppe Novati died at Santos (Sao Paolo – Brazil) on Feb. 4 1981, of sudden illness following a swim. He drowned before the swimming pool attendants could do anything to revive him. He was 52 years old, born at Cisano Bergamasco (Bergamo) on Nov. 11 1928.
He entered the Xaverians at S. Pietro in Vincoli in Oct. 1947, where he did Novitiate followed by religious mission profession of vows on Oct. 18 1948. At the end of his theology studies at Piacenza, he was ordained priest on March 29 1952.
Fr. Novati spent his first years of mission service at Zelarino, in vocation and mission animation through his ministry, teaching, and providing for the needs of the community as Treasurer.
At the age of 32, Fr. Novati left for the Congo on Aug. 16 1960, where he worked at Mwenga and Kamituga, even during years of political unrest which saw the killings of our Xaverian confreres in 1964.
He wrote from Mwenga: “I had 450 baptisms of adults and 300 of children just two weeks ago. The Monsignor came for the sacrament of Confirmation, and had to stay with us for over a week because of a local barricade at Mungombe. Fr. Fellini and I went to scout the place, and after a few words in Italian and a pack of cigarettes, we were able to prepare the journey so that the Monsignor would proceed towards Kamituga.” (Feb. 26 1961)
After a brief period in Italy and in Belgium, Fr. Novati was assigned to Northern Brazil (Amazon Region) in 1967, and worked at Belčm and Tomč-Aců, and served as Regional Superior for a three-year term from 1971 to 1974.
He was recalled to Italy, and named National Secretary of “Mani Tese”, an organization that sustains developing countries.
Towards the end of 1976 the Superior General proposed Fr. Giuseppe to return to Brazil. In his reply he said: “…Among the are numerous and appealing reasons for my staying in Italy, there isn’t one, for the time being, that would hold me back from leaving or would not allow me to return…” (March 30 1977)
He received the Visa to returned to Brazil in 1977, this time serving in Southern Brazil, involved in mission and vocation animation, and helping the Xaverian communities present in the Sao Paolo region to refocus on the goals of our congregation.
While relaxing with some confreres at Santos (Brazil) on a day off, he drowned swimming at the seashore of Mongaguŕ, after a sudden illness. At his funeral Liturgy, Card. Paolo Evaristo Arns, Archbishop of Sao Paolo was present, together with many confreres of the Region and friends who had come to know Fr. Novati, his enthusiasm for the mission cause, and his love for the people he served.
According to the wishes of his family members, he was buried in his native town of Cisano Bergamasco. May the Lord grant him eternal Rest.

Missionnaire enthousiaste au Congo et au Brésil. Animateur national de «Mani tese» en Italie.
Le père Joseph est décédé subitement au Brésil le 4 février 1981. Il avait 52 ans. Il s’était rendu avec trois autres confrères à Santos pour une journée de détente à la plage. Pendant qu’il prenait son bain, il fut atteint d’un malheur inattendu et fatal. Quant les secouristes le saisirent et l’emmenèrent sur la rive, il était déjà mort. A l’enterrement, dans la foule des personnes qui ont bien voulu participer aux obsèques, il y avait aussi le cardinal Paul Evariste Arns, archevêque de San Paolo.
Le père Joseph était né à Cisano (Bergame – Italie) le 11 novembre 1928. Il entra au Noviciat Xavérien en 1947 et, l’année suivante, le 18 octobre 1948, il fit sa Première Profession religieuse et missionnaire. Au terme de ses études théologiques à Piacenza, il fut ordonné prêtre le 29 décembre 1952.
Sa première affectation fut à Zelarino (Venise) où il manifesta rapidement son enthousiasme dans l’animation missionnaire et vocationnelle à travers le ministère pastoral, l’enseignement et le service d’économe.
A l’âge de 32 ans, le 16 août 1960, il partit pour la Mission Xavérienne de l’Afrique Centrale en travaillant plus particulièrement dans l’ex Congo – Belge. Après le stage de langue à Mwenga (Uvira), il exerça son ministère à Kamituga (Uvira) où son tempérament courageux lui permit d’affronter aisément la période socio–politique difficile que le pays traversait dans les années 60.
Après une brève période de recyclage en Belgique, en 1967, il fut affecté dans la Région Xavérienne du Nord du Brésil où, pendant trois ans, il fut Supérieur Régional (1971 – 1974).
En 1974, il lui fut demandé d’assumer la responsabilité de Secrétaire National de Mani tese (Mains tendues), un organisme de soutien aux pays en voie de développement.
En 1977, il rentra au Brésil mais, cette fois – ci, il travailla au Sud, dans la capitale San Paolo. Il se consacra entièrement à l’animation missionnaire de l’Eglise Brésilienne, en encourageant aussi les confrères à assumer des choix de vie conformes au charisme xavérien.
Plaise au Seigneur de magnifier l’ardeur missionnaire de Son serviteur, en lui accordant la pleine vision du visage divin.
