Il 21 novembre 2011, a Parma in Casa Madre, alle 07.50 si è spento, per collasso cardiocircolatorio su base di insufficienza cardiaca, il P. Pierluigi Sartorio. Era rientrato dal Congo, per accertamenti e cure, a metà giugno. Aveva 82 anni compiuti, essendo nato a Viadana (Mantova) il 23.06.1929.
Ripensando alla sua scelta vocazionale, P. Piero affermava senza esitazione: «A mia madre devo anche la mia vocazione missionaria. Ricordo che mi leggeva i racconti dei giornali missionari e mi esortava a pensare-pregare-sacrificare qualcosa di mio per i bambini della S. Infanzia» (Lett. 8.10.75).
Nel 1955, conseguita la laurea in chimica pura all'università di Parma, P. Piero fece domanda di entrare tra i Saveriani e di essere ammesso al Noviziato in vista del presbiterato. Al riguardo però aggiungeva «Desidererei riservarmi la possibilità di ripensare la mia decisione per vedere se non mi convenga invece lo stato di fratello coadiutore». La scelta fu «una sofferenza grande, una battaglia con il P. Maestro». Il 4.10.56 chiedeva «di poter fare la Prima Professione in ordine al Sacerdozio».
Dopo la professione raggiunse la comunità di Piacenza per un corso di filosofia e di introduzione allo studio della teologia che frequentò regolarmente a Parma dal 1957 al 1961. Fu ordinato presbitero a Parma il 16.10.1960. Così lo presentava il Rettore alla fine del primo anno di teologia: «Bontà di cuore, affabilità, semplicità e modestia sono le note più evidenti. Molto sensibile ai problemi dell'apostolato, ama le forme più ardite e letteralmente evangeliche. Negli studi di teologia ha trovato qualche difficoltà essendo avvezzo a un metodo tutto diverso».
Dopo l'ordinazione dal 1961 al 1971 svolse la sua attività in Congo nell'insegnamento, nella amministrazione e nella pastorale a Fizi, Kalambo, Baraka e, dopo una parentesi di due anni a Parma e Bruxelles, a Bukavu, Kamituga e Mungombe. Furono gli anni del promettente sviluppo della chiesa in quella regione, dell'entusiasmo per l'indipendenza, ma anche di difficoltà non risolte e di violenze. Ricordava in una lettera alla DG del 20.9.06: «Ero nelle mani dei Simba (a Baraka, condannato a morte due volte). Ero solo nel cachot, senza appoggi, con una paura matta … niente e nessuno mi poteva aiutare se non Lui …
Dal '71 al '78 prestò il suo servizio in Italia: animatore giovanile a San Pietro in Vincoli (72-74), Vice Maestro dei Novizi a Tavernerio (74-78) e Consigliere regionale. P. Piero non era un oratore, un trascinatore, ma era un formidabile affabulatore, sereno, delicatissimo, sempre disposto ad ascoltare.
Nel '78 rientrò in Congo. Vi rimase fino al giugno 2011: trentatré anni! Parroco a Baraka (78-80), Superiore Regionale (80-82), Vice-parroco a Bukavu-Cahi (82-84), Formatore nello Scolasticato Noviziato di Vamaro (84-91), Rettore della casa saveriana di Uvira (91-93), Formatore e attività sociali a Goma (93-96), Rettore della casa di Goma (96-06), Direttore Spirituale nello Scolasticato di Vamaro (06-08), dall'agosto del 2008 alla casa regionale di Bukavu, in cura e ministero.
«Volevo una vita così –ha scritto al P. Generale il 29.11.10– una vita semplice, a contatto con la gente più semplice dove non c'è bisogno di filosofia né di teologia, basta il Vangelo (la Bibbia)».
P. Piero, l'uomo dell'«amour solidaire! Misericorde! Compassion!» (Gilbert Mula); «un homme de confiance» (Valentin Shukuru); «qui dans sa souffrance est resté serviteur et ami de tous … qui se laissait toucher par la souffrance de l'autre» (Etienne Mulumeoderhwa); «evangelicamente libero, fedele all'Eucaristia, alla Riconciliazione, a prolungate pause di preghiera personale e con una grande 'intelligenza del cuore', al punto da voler a tutti i costi restare e morire nella 'sua' missione» (P. Antonio Trettel); il Saveriano «che viveva quello in cui credeva e ha trasmesso con la sua vita l'eredità spirituale del Santo Fondatore» (P. Bob Maloney).
Con S. Guido contempli in eterno l'amore di Dio.

Fr. Pierluigi Sartorio died of heart failure in the Mother House, Parma, on 21 November 2011. In the middle of June he had returned from the Congo for a medical check-up and treatment. Born in Viadana (Mantova, Italy) on 23 June 1929, he was 82 years old.
Looking back on his vocation, Fr. Piero said without any hesitation: «I owe my missionary vocation to my mother. I remember how she used to read stories to me from missionary magazines and exhorted me to think-pray-sacrifice something of my own for the children of the Holy Childhood » (Lett. 8.10.75).
In 1955, after obtaining a chemistry degree at Parma University, Fr. Piero applied to join the Xaverians and asked to be admitted to Novitiate to train for the priesthood. In connection with the latter, however, he added «I wish to reserve the opportunity of re-thinking my vocation in order to discern whether I am called to bea missionary brother». The decision was «a great suffering, a battle with the Novice Master». On 4 October 1956, he asked «to make the First Profession and prepare for the Priesthood ».
After profession, he was sent to Piacenza to study philosophy and an introductory course to theology, which he then continued until its completion in Parma (1957-61). He was ordained priest in Parma on 16 October 1960. At the end of the first year of theology, the Rector said in his report: «His most obvious virtues arekindness, affability, simplicity and modesty. He is very sensitive to the problems of the apostolate. He has encountered some difficulties in the study of theology, accustomed as he is to a completely different study method».
After ordination, he worked in the Congo (1961-71) in teaching, administration and the pastoral ministry at Fizi, Kalambo, Baraka and, after a two-year period in Parma and Bruxelles, at Bukavu, Kamituga and Mungombe. These were years of promising development in the Church in that region, and enthusiasm for independence, but also of unresolved difficulties and violence. In a letter to the General Direction dated 20 September 2006, he re called: «I was in the hands of the Simba (condemned to death twice in Baraka). I was alone in the cachot, without any support and scared to death … nothing and no one could help me except God … I realized that I still did not have faith, in other words, a true relationship of trust in Him».
From 1971 until 1978 he worked in Italy as youth animator at San Pietro in Vincoli (1972-74), assistant Novice Master at Tavernerio (1974-78) and Regional Councilor. Fr. Piero was neither a speaker nor a charismatic figure, but he was a formidable story-teller, serene, delicate, always willing to listen.
In 1978 he returned to the Congo and remained there for 33 years until June 2011! During that time he was parish priest at Baraka (1978-80), Regional Superior (1980-82), assistant priest at Bukavu-Cahi (1982-84), Formator in the Novitiate at Vamaro (1984-91), Rector of the Xaverian community in Uvira (1991-93),
Formator and social activities at Goma (1993-96), Rector of the community of Goma (1996-2006), Spiritual Director at Vamaro (2006-08) and, from August 2008, he stayed in the Regional House at Bukavu for medical treatment and ministry.
On 29 November 2010, he wrote to the Superior General: «This was the kind of life I wanted: simple, in touch with the most ordinary people who have no need of philosophy or theology, just the Gospel (the Bible)».
Fr. Piero was a man of «amour solidaire! Misericorde! Compassion!» (Gilbert Mula); «un homme de confiance» (Valentin Shukuru); «qui dans sa souffrance est resté serviteur et ami de tous … qui se laissait toucher par la souffrance de l’autre» (Etienne Mulumeoderhwa).
«Evangelically free, faithful to the Eucharist, Reconciliation, lengthy periods of personal prayer and with a great ‘wisdom of the heart’, to the extent that he wanted at all costs to remain and die in ‘his’ mission» (Fr. A. Trettel); he was a Xaverian «who lived what he believed and handed on through his life the spiritual heritage of our Holy Founder » (Fr. Bob Maloney).
