Alle ore 14.15 locali del 3 agosto 2004, all’Ospedale Yos Sudarso di Padang (Indonesia) è morto il P. Lorenzo Scaglia. Il confratello era stato colpito da infarto verso le 05.00 del mattino. Immediatamente ricoverato nell’unità coronarica intensiva del vicino ospedale, Yos Sudarso, aveva reagito positivamente alle cure apprestate. Purtroppo verso le 13.00 sopravveniva una seconda crisi cardiaca e la situazione precipitava irreparabilmente.
Aveva 68 anni compiuti, essendo nato a Bettegno di Pontevico (Brescia) il 6.5.1936.
P. Lorenzo entrò tra i Saveriani il 20.9.1948 a Vicenza dove frequentò la prima media. Passò quindi a Grumone per gli altri due anni delle medie. Successivamente proseguì l’iter formativo saveriano con il ginnasio superiore a Zelarino (51-53), il Noviziato e la prima Professione a S. Pietro in Vincoli (53-54), il Liceo a Desio (54-57), il prefettato a Cremona (57-58), la Teologia a Parma (58-62). Fu ordinato presbitero il 15.10.1961. Furono anni, quelli della formazione, di autentica crescita umana e spirituale come si può leggere nella presentazione al suddiaconato che rilevava in P. Lorenzo: «Capacità buona. Profondo spirito di pietà. Molto esemplare e sincero impegno per progredire» (26.4.61).
Alla fine della teologia fu destinato all’Indonesia. Vi giunse verso la fine di luglio 1962. Ne fu entusiasta, come scrisse qualche tempo dopo al Superiore Generale: «Sono veramente felice, contento. Sento che il Signore mi sta facendo grazie veramente grandi. Dovrei ringraziarla del favore che mi ha fatto mandandomi in questa bella missione; e lo faccio volentieri» (22.9.62). Si dedicò con successo allo studio della lingua e dopo qualche mese poté iniziare la sua attività missionaria. Fu insegnante nelle scuole superiori cattoliche di Padang e, allo stesso tempo, aiutante in cattedrale e assistente delle numerose associazioni laicali della città. Nel 1970 fu fatto Presidente della Yayasan Prayoga, l’ente scolastico diocesano, preposto alle scuole cattoliche che, durante la presidenza di P. Lorenzo, conobbero un vero boom e un significativo incremento con la fondazione dell’ABA (Accademia delle lingue estere) e della SMF (Scuola per assistenti farmacisti).
Nel 1974 gli fu chiesto di lavorare per tre anni in Italia. L’avvicendamento però, nonostante la sua disponibilità iniziale e le attenzioni dei Superiori, risultò un calvario, «un trapianto che – per la felice esperienza indonesiana e le oggettive difficoltà a trovargli un’attività confacente in Italia – aveva tutti i presupposti per il rigetto» (11.10.74).
Ritornato in Indonesia nel 1977, fu di nuovo impegnato nella scuola e nella pastorale: Parroco della cattedrale di Padang (78-83), Presidente della Prayoga (83-89) e, contemporaneamente, ancora assistente della Legio Mariae, del PMKRI (Associazione universitari cattolici), dell'Apostolato della preghiera, Segretario del consiglio presbiterale e Consigliere Regionale. Come parroco costruì, vicino alla Cattedrale, la Casa di Esercizi della Diocesi: Come responsabile della Yayasan Prayoga ristrutturò il Liceo don Bosco e costruì un palazzetto dello sport che anche oggi è usato da gruppi cattolici e per attività civiche.
Dal 1989 al 2004 lavorò a Jakarta nella parrocchia Stella Maris (89-93) e poi del Bintaro (93-04). Curava particolarmente il catecumenato –«non sono pochi quelli da lui battezzati che lo ricordano per il suo entusiasmo, allegria e buon umore» (P. Orrù, 4.8.04)– ed era molto richiesto per conferenze. L’ultima sua iniziativa, la creazione di “Matius 25”, un gruppo interreligioso che, ispirandosi al Vangelo di Matteo 25,35 «Avevo fame e mi avete dato da mangiare; avevo sete e mi avete dato da bere», assicura assistenza medica gratuita e aiuto materiale ai meno fortunati della zona.
Il Signore accolga nel suo Paradiso questo suo servo fedele che, con generosità e intelligenza, ha lavorato instancabilmente per il Regno, in terra di Indonesia.

Fr. Lorenzo Scaglia died on Aug. 3 2004, In the Yos Sudarso Hospital of Padang (Indonesia), at 2:15 pm local time. That same day, in the early hours of the morning, he had suffered a heart attack and was immediately admitted to the intensive coronary care unit of the nearby hospital. After an initial positive reaction to treatment, he suffered a second attack around 1:00 pm and his condition quickly deteriorated.
Born in Bettegno di Pontevico (Brescia), on May 6 1936, Fr. Lorenzo was 68 years old.
He joined the Xaverians in Vicenza on Sept. 20 1948 for the first year of junior high school. He then moved to Grumone for the remaining two years. Afterwards, he continued the Xaverian formation with senior high school at Zelarino (1951-53), Novitiate and First Profession at S. Pietro in Vincoli (on Sept. 12 1954), Liceo at Desio (1954-57), prefect at Cremona (1957-58) and Theology at Parma (1958-62). He was ordained priest on Oct. 15 1961. His formation years were ones of true human and spiritual growth; his presentation to the sub-diaconate states: “He is a capable man; he is endowed with a deep piety. He is of good example and is committed to further growth.” (April 26 1961).
After the end of Theology he was assigned to Indonesia where he arrived in July 1962. He spoke of his enthusiasm in a letter to the Superior General: “I am really happy and content. I feel that the Lord has granted me truly great graces. I want to thank you for sending me to this beautiful mission” (Sept. 22 1962). He was successful in his study of the language and began his missionary activity after a few months. He taught in the Catholic Secondary schools of Padang and, at the same time, he helped in the Cathedral and assisted the numerous lay associations of the city. In 1970 he was appointed President of the Yayasan Prayoga, the diocesan academic organization in charge of the catholic schools, which experienced a considerable growth during the Presidency of Fr. Lorenzo thanks to the foundation of the ABA (Academy of foreign languages) and the SMF (School for assistant pharmacists).
In 1974 he was asked to work for three years in Italy. In spite of his initial availability and the attention of the Superiors, rotation turned out to be a real ordeal for him, “a move that –because of his happy experience in Indonesia and the objective difficulties in finding him a suitable activity in Italy – was doomed to failure from the start” (Oct. 11 1974).
He returned to Indonesia in 1977 where he worked in school and pastoral activity: Parish Priest of Padang cathedral (1978-83), President of Prayoga (1983-89) and, at the same time, assistant to the Legion of Mary, to PMKRI (Association of Catholic University students), to the Apostolate of Prayer, Secretary of the council of priests and Regional Councilor. During his time as parish priest he built the Diocesan Retreat House near the Cathedral. When he was in charge of the Yayasan Prayoga, he carried out reconstruction work on the Don Bosco Secondary School and built a sports arena, which is still used today by Catholic groups and for civic activities.
From 1989 until 2004 he worked in Jakarta in the parish of Stella Maris (1989-93) and then in the parish of the Bintaro (1993-2004). He took a particular interest in catechesis – “many of those he baptized remember his enthusiasm, cheerfulness and good humor” (Fr. Orrú, Aug. 4, 2004) – and he was much sought after for conferences. His last initiative, the creation of “Matius 25”, an inter-religious group which, inspired by Matthew’s Gospel, “I was hungry and you game me to eat; I was thirsty and you game to drink” (Matt. 25:35), provided free medical assistance and material help to the least fortunate people of the area.
