Missionario in Cina per 15 anni ed in Amazzonia per 20 anni "el vecio". Di anni 67. Sepolto a Parma
Nacque a Castelvecchio di Valdagno (VI) il 29.XI.1910. A 17 anni, dopo aver fatto il contadino, entrava nell'Istituto Saveriano a Vicenza, chiamato "el vecio" dai tanti suoi compagni undicenni.
Emessa la Professione l'11.VIII.1931, e completata la Teologia fu ordinato Sacerdote nella Cattedrale di Parma il 19.VI.1938.
A 27 anni, nell'agosto 1938 partiva per la Cina assieme al P. Giovanni Castelli imbarcandosi sulla nave "Conte Rosso". Completato lo studio del cinese a Tien-tsin, fu destinato alla località di Teng-fong con il P. Fontana: pochi mesi dopo, a causa dell'avanzata delle truppe giapponesi, fu obbligato a domicilio coatto e quindi, dal giugno 1942 all'agosto 1945 in campo di concentramento a Sichwan assieme ai Confratelli della Missione di Loyang.
Giunta la liberazione, fece ritorno a Teng-fong come cappellano e direttore dell'ambulatorio, avendo il P. Collini come compagno di Missione.
Di lì a poco si manifestò in modo sempre più intenso l'aspetto antireligioso del regime comunista cinese: i due Padri sono oggetto di calunnie, imposture, violenze, angherie, giudizi, persecuzioni ed infine condanna al carcere. I diciotto mesi di carcere si conclusero con la condanna e l'espulsione dalla Cina perché colpevole di azione antigovernativa, - di aver fatto pressioni sui giovani, - di aver fabbricato medicine false, - fatto esportare tesori e cose preziose... Toccò il suolo libero di Hong-kong il 3.X.1953.
Nei quattro anni di permanenza in Italia fu Direttore Spirituale della Casa di Parma e Vice-maestro dei Novizi Probandi e quindi addetto al ministero.
Il 21.I.1958, assieme al P. Antonio Pozzato, partì per il Brasile sulla nave "Conte Biancamano”; lavorò nelle Parrocchie di Cerro Azul e Jaguapità.
Scriveva: "...alla Domenica alzata alle 5,30. Confesso in Parrocchia fino alle 8.30, poi dico una Messa all'est alla mattina ed una all'ovest alla sera con confessioni a volontà. Negli altri giorni servizio di battesimi, matrimoni, estreme unzioni, benedizioni, visite in parrocchia..." (23.III.1960).
Fatta domanda per il nuovo campo di lavoro dei Saveriani in Amazzonia, poté recarvisi nel luglio 1962. Ebbe come incarico la cura pastorale di Barcarena e Mojù, pur abitando prima a Belèm (1962), poi ad Abaetè (1963), poi a Cafezal (1964). Dal 1965 al 1970 fu incaricato solo di Mojù, dove prese dimora stabile nel 1968. Nel 1971 fu incaricato della Parrocchia di Barcarena ed in essa operò fino al rientro in Italia, nella primavera del 1978, obbligato da un infarto che lo portò a curarsi nell'Ospedale di Valdagno e quindi a Parma dove il Signore lo chiamò a sé il 17 Ottobre 1978.
Aveva camminato sulle strade della Cina, aveva girato su quelle del Brasile; ma i suoi viaggi sui fiumi dell'Amazzonia in cerca di anime restano ancora vivi nel ricordo di coloro che furono missionari accanto a lui:
"La vita di P. Giovannino è costellata di fioretti ed episodi che mostrano la carità ed il suo buon cuore... "el vecio" aveva le mani buche e distribuiva anche ciò che pescava sui fiumi dell'Amazzonia..." (Mons. G. Gazza). "Stavamo bene con lui... Il P. Giovanni era un pilota eccezionale: conosceva i motori delle barche in modo unico... li riparava con disinvoltura ed abilità eccezionali... la barca era la sua dimora abituale: con essa andava a visitare le comunità dell'interno. Spesso partiva al pomeriggio, e alla sera prima di arrivare al villaggio si fermava, legava la barca ad un albero, buttava la rete nel fiume e poi si metteva a riposare sull'amaca. Di buon mattino, tirava su la rete e riprendeva il viaggio..." (Missionaria Antonia Rota). "Il suo maggior difetto lo si può chiamare eccesso di bontà e di fiducia negli altri... I "cabocli" di qui lo ritenevano della loro classe sociale. Il P. Joazinho aveva il cuore più grande della testa...." (PP. Mainini e Pansa).

Fr. Giovanni Urbani died of a heart attack on Oct. 17 1978 at the Mother House in Parma. He was 67 years old, born at Castelvecchio di Valdagno (Vicenza) on Nov. 29 1910.
He entered the Xaverian minor seminary at Vicenza when he was 17 years old, after a few years of farming. Because of his age, his much younger companions at the seminary named him “El vecio = the eldest”. He professed Religious vows on Aug. 11 1931 and at the end of Theology in Parma, he was ordained priest in the Cathedral of Parma on June 19, 1938.
At the age of 27, in August 1938, Fr. Giovanni left for China together with Fr. Giovanni Castelli. After the studies of the Chinese language at Tien-tsin, he served at Teng-fong with Fr. Fontana; but due to the advance of the Japanese troops, he was under house arrest, and then, from June 1942 to August 1945, joined the other Xaverians of the mission of Loyang at the concentration camp of Sichwan. When freedom came, he went back to Teng-fong and served with Fr. Collini. Unfortunately, the communist Chinese regime did not make it easy for them: they endured calumnies, ridicule, violence, public condemnation, persecutions and prison. They spent 18 months of prison and final expulsion from China because of doing antigovernment activities, applying pressure of the youth, fabricating false medicines, exporting treasures and precious things. They were finally freed in Hong-Kong on Oct. 3 1953.
Fr. Giovanni spent a period of four years in Italy as Spiritual director of the Mother House and Vice-master of the novices. He then left for Brazil South on Jan. 21 1958 together with Fr. Antonio Pozzato, and worked at Cerro Azul and Jaguapitŕ. He wrote about his activities during those days: “On Sunday, I wake up at 5:30, and hear confessions until 8:30. Then I celebrate mass facing east in the morning, and facing west in the evening, with more confessions. The other days, I’m busy with baptisms, weddings, anointings, blessings, and visits in the parish.” (March 23 1960).
He requested to work with the Xaverians in the Amazon region, where he served from July 1962 until his return to Italy in the Spring of 1978. He worked at Barcarena and Mojů, while living in Belém, Abaeté and Cafezal (1962-64). He was parish priest of Mojů from 1965 to 1970, and then moved to Barcarena until 1978.
He walked the roads of China, and traveled the streets of Brazil; yet, those who worked with him remember the days “floating in the waters of the Amazon rivers”, always searching for souls to bring Christ’s message. “The life of Fr. Giovannino is touched by facts and events that show his charity and his good heart… ‘El Vecio’ had holes in his hands, and gave even what he fished in the rivers.” (Msgr. G. Gazza).
“We felt at ease around him… Fr. Giovanni was an exceptional pilot: he knew the engines of the boats he drove and would fix them easily, with exceptional skill. The motorboat was his usual home; he would visit often the communities in the interior. At times he would leave in the afternoon, and then, towards evening, stop the boat close to a tree, put out the net, set the hammock, and sleep there, till the next morning. Then he would restart his journey, after having retrieved all the fish from the net.” (Missionary Antonia Rota).
“His main defect, if we could call it that way, was his excess of goodness and his trust in others… The local ‘cabocli’ (peasant workers) would consider him as one of their own. Our dear Fr. Joazinho had his heart bigger than his head.” (Frs. Mainini and Pansa).
