LETTERA DI NATALE E ANNO NUOVO 2020

«In principio era il Verbo, e il Verbo era presso Dio e il Verbo era Dio. In lui era la vita e la vita era la luce degli uomini;
la luce splende nelle tenebre e le tenebre non l'hanno vinta ... Venne fra i suoi, e i suoi non lo hanno accolto. A quanti però lo hanno accolto ha dato potere di diventare figli di Dio: a quelli che credono nel suo nome, i quali, non da sangue né da volere di carne né da volere di uomo, ma da Dio sono stati generati.
E il Verbo si fece carne e venne ad abitare in mezzo a noi; e noi abbiamo contemplato la sua gloria, gloria come del Figlio unigenito che viene dal Padre, pieno di grazia e di verità» (Gv 1,1-14).

Carissimi familiari e amici dei Missionari Saveriani,

la celebrazione della nascita del «Dio con noi» e l’inizio del prossimo anno 2020, ci dà l’occasione di essere di nuovo in comunicazione con voi tutti. È un grande avvenimento della nostra fede che va vissuto e quindi condiviso nella fraternità che caratterizza la nostra famiglia missionaria.

Come facciamo ogni anno, cogliamo quest’occasione per condividere con voi gli avvenimenti più importanti che hanno segnato la vita della nostra famiglia saveriana. Eccone alcuni.

COSUMA continentali

Per la prima volta, come richiesto dall’ultimo capitolo generale, abbiamo celebrato la Cosuma (Conferenza dei superiori maggiori) per continenti. In gennaio, i superiori delle circoscrizioni delle Americhe (Brasile Nord e Sud, Colombia, Messico e Usa) si sono incontrati a Guadalajara in Messico. In aprile c’è stato l’incontro per i superiori delle circoscrizioni dell’Africa (Mozambico, Sierra Leone, Burundi, Camerun-Ciad e Repubblica Democratica del Congo) a Bukavu nella RDC. E in novembre i superiori delle circoscrizioni dell’Asia (Bangladesh, Indonesia, Thailandia, Giappone, Filippine e Taiwan) si sono incontrati a Giakarta in Indonesia. Nell’ottobre 2020 ci sarà l’incontro per la Cosuma Europa.

Il tema di lavoro e riflessione che ci ha accompagnato è stato lo stesso che ha guidato il XVII capitolo generale nel 2017, ma adesso applicato ad ogni continente. «Quale missione ad gentes per noi, missionari saveriani, oggi in America, Africa, Asia». Sono stati momenti molto belli di condivisione della presenza saveriana in ogni paese, di riflessione, di ascolto fraterno, di ricerca di ciò che lo Spirito di Dio vuole indicarci in questo momento storico che stiamo vivendo. Si sente il bisogno di camminare insieme, con uno sguardo più continentale. Alla fine, sono venuti fuori degli orientamenti per i prossimi anni e allo stesso tempo sono stati presi degli impegni comuni da realizzare.

Nuove presenze missionarie

Il XVII capitolo generale aveva dato delle indicazioni per tre possibili aperture nella ricerca di vie nuove per il primo annuncio. Durante questo anno 2019, abbiamo dato inizio a due di esse. Si tratta di due nuove presenze: una, nella diocesi di Alto Solimões, in Brasile, dove il vescovo è il nostro confratello Adolfo Zon Pereira; e l’altra, nel vicariato di Mongo, in Ciad. La diocesi di Alto Solimões, in piena Amazzonia, si caratterizza per la presenza significativa di popolazione indigena, diversificata in gruppi differenti. Il vicariato di Mongo invece è una regione, di estensione come l’Italia, maggioritariamente musulmana.

Ringraziamo il Signore per questo nuovo campo di lavoro missionario che ci offre, e allo stesso tempo chiediamo allo Spirito Santo di guidarci perché possiamo essere dei veri testimoni dell’amore di Dio, allargando così il cerchio della famiglia dei figli di Dio.

Mozambico

Nella notte tra il 14 e il 15 marzo, la città di Beira e i suoi dintorni sono stati fortemente colpiti dal tifone “Idai” che ha provocato molte vittime e danni materiali. Delle quattro parrocchie gestite dai Saveriani, solo quella di Dondo, situata a una quindicina di chilometri da Beira, è stata colpita. C’è stata una grande solidarietà con questa comunità saveriana, e attraverso di essa con l’intera diocesi di Beira. Grazie!

Mese missionario straordinario

A cento anni dalla promulgazione della Lettera apostolica Maximum Illud del Papa Benedetto XV, si è celebrato, indetto da Papa Francesco, il Mese Missionario Straordinario (Ottobre 2019), che ha avuto come tema: “Battezzati e inviati: la Chiesa di Cristo in missione nel mondo”. «Rinnovare l’impegno missionario della Chiesa, riqualificare in senso evangelico la sua missione di annunciare e di portare al mondo la salvezza di Gesù Cristo, morto e risorto», sono stati gli obiettivi di questo mese secondo quanto papa Francesco ha detto nel messaggio per la Giornata Missionaria Mondiale 2019.

Ricordiamo che san Guido M. Conforti stava giocando un ruolo importante nello sviluppo del dinamismo missionario nella Chiesa italiana quando Benedetto XV scrisse questa Lettera apostolica.

Assemblea Speciale del Sinodo dei Vescovi per la regione Pan-Amazzonica

Dal 6 al 27 ottobre si è celebrata a Roma questa Assemblea Speciale, che ha avuto come tema: Amazzonia, Nuovi Cammini per la Chiesa e per una Ecologia Integrale. Due confratelli hanno preso parte come padri sinodali: Mgr. Adolfo Zon Pereira, vescovo di Alto Solimões, e p. Pedro Saúl Ruíz Alvárez, superiore religioso dei missionari saveriani in Amazzonia. P. Diego Pelizzari, impegnato nella pastorale indigenista in Brasile, ha fatto parte dell’equipe di animazione della Tenda Amazzonica.

Formazione Permanente

È stato organizzato, da metà settembre all’inizio di novembre a Tavernerio, un corso chiamato «i50 giorni» di formazione permanente destinato ai confratelli che hanno fatto la loro professione perpetua una decina di anni fa. Diciannove i confratelli partecipanti originari del Camerun, Congo, Messico, Indonesia, Filippine e Italia.

Pontificio Consiglio per il Dialogo Inter-Religioso

L’11 novembre, il Santo Padre ha nominato Sotto-Segretario del Pontificio Consiglio per il Dialogo Inter-Religioso il nostro confratello Paulin Batairwa Kubuya. P. Paulin, originario della RDCongo, è missionario in Taiwan dal 2000. Da anni lavorava in questo settore così importante della missione ad gentes oggi in Asia. Ringraziamo il Santo Padre per la fiducia riposta nella nostra famiglia saveriana attraverso p. Paulin, e accompagniamo questo confratello con la nostra stima e preghiera.

La formazione di Base

Il Signore continua a chiamare giovani per il campo missionario nella nostra famiglia. In questo anno 2019, diciannove giovani hanno fatto la prima professione religiosa, originari di sette paesi dove siamo presenti: Indonesia, Messico, Brasile, Sierra Leone, Camerun, Burundi e RDCongo.

I confratelli Sutatno Antonius, Tjeunfin Erik, Masri Handrianus, Parung Yanuarius Yeremias, Abi Evansius (Indonesia), Fornah Abdul Patrick (Sierra Leone), Alves de Ávila Ribeiro Marcelo (Brasile), Ndiwe Chiza Christophe, Nshole Maji Aimé, Chobohwa Aganze Jean-Claude, Musengo Lusika Gregoire (RDCongo), Majambere Jean-Paul, Bikorimana Renovat, Irakiza Arcade (Burundi), Rossini Pietro (Italia) e Kouam Ghomsi Leonel (Camerun) hanno fatto la professione perpetua a Manila, Yaoundé, Città del Messico e Parma.

I confratelli Maurice Fokam, Hermann Kentsa Sokeng, e Joseph Ghomsi Deffo (Camerun), Yohannes Taninas, Benyamin Sam, e Dominggus Arianto Bere Dina (Indonesia), Jean Zihalirwa Balola, Innocent Munandi Bahige e Serge Kabalama Cibangala (RDC) hanno ricevuto l’ordinazione presbiterale e sono stati destinati in differenti settori dell’attività missionaria. Ringraziamo il Signore per il dono della loro vita al servizio della missione e li affidiamo in modo particolare alla vostra preghiera.

Sei studenti di voti temporanei sono usciti.

Cento anni

Prima c’era stato p. Augusto Luca nel 2017 a raggiungere il traguardo di cento anni. Lui è salito alla casa del Padre l’anno scorso. Adesso è p. Francesco Cavallo che il 16 novembre ha celebrato insieme a tutti i saveriani e amici presenti a Salerno i cento anni di vita. Deo gratias!

I confratelli defunti

I confratelli che sono stati chiamati dal Signore durante quest’ anno sono nove: Audisio P. Mario (82 anni), Dalla Valle P. Vittorio (94 anni), Gorostiaga P. Sabino (83 anni), Bacchin P. Flavio (72 anni), Pennino P. Michelangelo (78 anni), Coni P. Alfio (77 anni), Toninelli Giovanni Maria (87 anni), Allevi P. Emidio (84 anni), Marzarotto P. Giuseppe (84 anni). Dona loro, Signore, il riposo eterno!

Postulazione Generale

BURUNDI

Il 21 giugno 2019, nella Cattedrale di Bururi, il Vescovo Mons. Venant Bacinoni ha solennemente aperto il Processo per la causa di Beatificazione sul martirio, che include i saveriani p. Ottorino Maule, p. Aldo Marchiol, la volontaria Catina Gubert, Abbè Michel Kayoya, ucciso il 17 maggio 1972 (e al quale verrà intitolata la Causa), e i quaranta seminaristi di Buta, uccisi il 30 aprile 1997. È la Prima Causa di canonizzazione che si apre in Burundi.

Carissimi familiari, laici saveriani, benefattori e amici, tanti auguri di buon Natale e Anno Nuovo 2020. Con gioia e riconoscenza accogliamo il dono della Vita che Dio ci offre nel suo Figlio, e con la certezza che il Signore ci precede ovunque andiamo, entriamo nel nuovo anno pieni di fiducia e speranza. Il Signore ha bisogno di ognuno di noi per continuare a realizzare il suo sogno, che diventa anche nostro: fare del mondo una sola famiglia.

Che il Signore benedica le vostre famiglie e voi tutti.

 CHRISTMAS LETTER AND NEW YEAR 2020

“In the beginning was the Word: the Word was with God and the Word was God.  He was with God in the beginning.  Through him all things came to be, not one thing had its being but through him.  All that came to be had life in him and that life was the light of men, a light that shines in the dark, a light that darkness could not overpower” (Jn 1,1-14).

Dearest family members and friends of the Xaverian Missionaries,

The Celebration of the Birth of “God among us” and the beginning of this new year 2020, give us the opportunity of communicating once again with all of you.  It is a most great event of our faith and it is to be lived and shared in that fraternity which characterizes our missionary family.

As we have done it in the past years, we like to share with all of you some of the important events which have marked our life journey in the Xaverian family.  Here there are some of them.

CONTINENTAL COSUMA MEETINGS

For the first time, as it had been requested by our last General Chapter, we celebrated he COSUMA (Conference of Major Superiors) MEETINGS by Continents.   In the month of January, the Circumscriptions of the Americas (North and South Brazil, Colombia, Mexico and USA) met in the city of Guadalajara, Mexico.  In April, there was the Meeting of the Major Superiors of the Circumscriptions of Africa (Mozambique, Sierra Leon, Burundi, Cameroun-Ciad and The Democratic Republic of Congo) at Bukavu in the DRC.  In November, the Major Superiors of the Circumscriptions of Asia (Bangladesh, Indonesia, Japan, Philippines and Taiwan) met at Jakarta in Indonesia.   In October 2020, there will be the Meeting of Europe COSUMA.

The work and our reflections were guided by the spirit and suggestions of  XVII General Chapter.  Now they were applied to the singular context of the Continents we are working in.  “What kind of ‘Mission Ad Gentes’ is ours as Xaverian Missionaries, today present in America, Africa, Asia”.   They were beautiful moments of sharing our experiences of  Xaverian presence in the diverse countries, of reflection, of brotherly listening to each other, of searching together for what the Spirit of God seems to indicate for us in this particular historical moment in which we are living.

We do feel the need to walk together, with a greater continental outlook.  As fruits of our meetings we verbalized some specific orientations for our future and, at the same time, we assumed some specific tasks to carry forward.

New Missionary Presences

The XVII General Chapter had stated some specific orientations for three possible new missionary pathways in our service to the announcement of the Gospel.  During this year 2019 we have initiated two of them. They are two new presences: one, in the Diocese of Alto Solimoes, in Brazil, where our confrere Mons. Adolfo Zon Pereira is Bishop; the other, in the Vicariate of Mongo, Ciad.  The Diocese of Alto Solimoes, in the Amazons, is characterized by a significant indigenous presence, divided in various different local groups.  Instead, the Vicariate of Mongo is a region as big as Italy, with the majority of the population belonging to the Moslem religion.

We thank the Lord for giving us these new fields of missionary work.  At the same time, we do pray the Holy Spirit to guide us so as to be true witnesses of God’s love, increasing the number of the children of God.

Mozambique

During the night of March 14-15, the city of Beira and its surrounding areas were hit by the typhoon “Idai”.  Many were the victims and the material damages.  Of the four Xaverian Parishes, only the one of Longo, situated at about fifteen kilometers from Beira, was hit.  There was a great spirit of solidarity in this Xaverian community, and, through it, by the whole Diocese of Beira.   Thanks!

Extraordinary Mission Month

After one hundred years from the promulgation of the Apostolic Letter ‘Maximum Illud’ by Pope Benedict XV, we celebrated the Extraordinary Mission Month (October 2019), instituted by Pope Francis.  Its theme was: “Baptized and sent: the Church of Christ in mission in the world”.   “To renew our missionary commitment in the Church, to re-qualify in its evangelical meaning the mission of announcing and of bringing to the world the salvation brought by Jesus Christ, dead and risen”, were the goals for this month, as stated by Pope Francis in his message for this World Mission Day 2019.

Let us recall that St. Guido Maria Conforti had an important role in the development of the missionary dynamism of the Italian Church at the time in which Pope Benedict XV wrote this Apostolic Letter.

Special Assembly for the Synod of Bishops for the Pan-Amazonian Region

From October 6th to the 27th, in Rome, this Special Assembly took place. Its theme was: “Amazonia, New pathways for the Church and for a New Integral Ecology”.  Two of our confreres took place as Synodal fathers: Mons. Adolfo Zon Pereira, Bishop of Alto Solimoes, and Fr. Pedro Saùl Ruiz Alvàrez, Religious Superior of the Xaverian Missionaries working in the Amazonian areas.   Fr, Diego Pelizzari, deeply involved in the indigenous pastoral activities in Brazil, was a member of the team working in the Amazonia Booth.

Ongoing Formation

From the middle of September to the beginning of November, in Tavernerio, there was a course entitled “i50 giorni”.  It was a course of permanent formation for the Xaverian Confreres who had celebrated their Perpetual Profession ten years ago.   Nineteen confreres participated.  They were from Cameroun, Democratic Republic of Congo, Mexico, Indonesia, Philippines and Italy.

Pontifical Council for Inter-Religious Dialogue

On November 11th – 2019, the Holy Father named our confrere Fr. Paulin Batairwa Kubuya Sub-Secretary of the pontifical Council for Inter-Religious Dialogue.  Fr. Paulin Batirwa Kubuya, originally from the Democratic Republic of Congo, has been working in our Mission of Taiwan since the year 2000.  It is years in which Fr. Paulin has been at work in this area, so important today in Asia.  We thank the Holy Father for the trust he has placed on our Xaverian family through this nomination of Fr. Paulin and we do accompany our confrere with our prayers and appreciation.

Initial Formation

The Lord keeps on calling young men for the service of mission in our family.  In this year 2019, nineteen young men have celebrated this First Religious Profession. They are coming from seven countries where we are present: Indonesia, Mexico, Brazil, Sierra Leon, Cameroun, Burundi, and Democratic Republic of Congo.

Our Confreres Maurice Fokam, Hermann Kentsa Soken, and Joseph Ghomsi Deffo (Cameroun) Yohanes Taninas, Benyamin Sam, and Dominggus Ariyanto Dina (Indonesia) Jean Zihalirwa Balola, Innocent Munandi Bahige and Serge Kabalama Cibangala (Democratic Republic of Congo) were ordained Priests and were assigned to different ministries of our missionary activity.  We thank the Lord for the gift of their life for the service of mission and we do entrust them to the Lord in our prayers.

Six students in temporary vows have left the Congregation.

One hundred Years

It was in 2017, when Fr. Augusto Luca had reached the goal of 100 years of age.  Last year Fr. Luca returned to the house of the Father.   Now it is Fr. Francesco Cavallo, who, on Novenber 16th – 2019, has celebrated this happy event, together with all the Xaverians and friends present in the House of Salerno.  Deo gratias!  Thanks be to God!

Deceased Confreres

The Confreres called home by the Lord in this past year were nine:  Fr. Mario Audisio (82 years), Fr. Vittorio Dalla Valle (94 years),  Fr. Sabino Gorostiaga (83 years), Fr. Flavio Bacchin (72 years), Fr. Michelangelo Pennino (78 years), Fr. Alfio Coni (77 years),  Fr. Giovanni Maria Toninelli (87 years), Fr. Emilio Allevi (84 years), Fr. Giuseppe Marzarotto (84 years).                                    

O Lord, grant them eternal rest!

On June 21st – 2019, in the Cathedral of Bururi, Burundi,  Bishop Mons. Venant Bacinoni, solemnly opened the process of Beatification  for martyrdom, which includes the names of the Xaverians: Fr, Ottorino Maule, Fr. Aldo Marchiol, our lay volunteer Catina Gubert, Abbè Michel Kayoya, killed on May 17th – 1972 (the Cause will bear his name), and the 40 Seminarians of Buta, killed on April 30th – 1997.   This is the First Process of Beatification opened in Burundi.

Very dear Family Members, Lay Xaverians, Benefactors and Friends, to all of you our best wishes for a Holy and Happy Christmas, and a great New Year 2020.  With joy and gratitude we welcome the gift of Life God gives us in his Son. We are certain the Lord precedes us wherever we go. We do begin this year filled with trust and hope.  The Lord needs each one of us to continue building His Kingdom and to make real the dream which has become our own: to make the whole world one sole family.
