Gerusalemme, 27 settembre 2025 – Alla vigilia del discorso del Primo Ministro israeliano Benjamin Netanyahu all’Assemblea Generale delle Nazioni Unite, una voce ecumenica proveniente dalla Terra Santa ha voluto ristabilire la verità: non è l’Autorità Palestinese a mettere in difficoltà i Cristiani di Betlemme e della Palestina, ma l’occupazione israeliana.
Netanyahu ha sostenuto che il calo dei Cristiani a Betlemme sarebbe legato al governo dell’ANP. Ma la realtà storica racconta un’altra storia:

Betlemme era a maggioranza cristiana fino al 1948, anno della Nakba, quando l’espulsione di centinaia di migliaia di Palestinesi cambiò la composizione della città.

Dal 1967, con l’occupazione della Cisgiordania, le restrizioni imposte da Israele hanno reso la vita sempre più difficile, spingendo molti all’emigrazione.

Oggi, le politiche israeliane di chiusure, permessi e segregazione territoriale soffocano Betlemme, accentuate dal crollo del turismo a causa della guerra a Gaza.
Cristiani e Musulmani vivono le stesse fatiche e resistono insieme, chiedendo uguaglianza, giustizia e pace.
La dichiarazione è stata firmata da importanti leader religiosi, tra cui:

oltre a numerosi rappresentanti cristiani locali e internazionali.
Un messaggio forte e chiaro: non permettere che la verità venga distorta. L’unica causa della sofferenza dei Cristiani in Palestina resta l’occupazione israeliana.

Jerusalem, September 27, 2025 – On the eve of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s speech at the United Nations General Assembly, an ecumenical voice from the Holy Land sought to set the record straight: it is not the Palestinian Authority that puts Christians in Bethlehem and Palestine in difficulty, but the Israeli occupation.
Netanyahu claimed that the decline of Christians in Bethlehem is linked to the Palestinian Authority’s rule. But historical reality tells a different story:

Bethlehem was a Christian-majority city until 1948, the year of the Nakba, when the expulsion of hundreds of thousands of Palestinians changed the city’s demographic composition.

Since 1967, with the occupation of the West Bank, Israeli-imposed restrictions have made life increasingly difficult, pushing many to emigrate.

Today, Israeli policies of closures, permits, and territorial segregation are suffocating Bethlehem, further worsened by the collapse of tourism due to the war in Gaza.
Christians and Muslims share the same struggles and continue to live side by side, calling for equality, justice, and peace.

A strong and clear message: the truth must not be distorted. The only cause of the suffering of Christians in Palestine remains the Israeli occupation.
