COMUNITÀ DEL IV PIANO – CASA MADRE – PARMA: “LA GRAZIA DELLE VISITE”
Volentieri condividiamo alcune notizie dalla nostra amata comunità del IV Piano della Casa Madre. Stiamo tutti abbastanza bene. Ora la comunità è composta di 26 confratelli, con l’ultimo arrivo di p. Giovanni Querzani direttamente dalla Repubblica Democratica del Congo qualche settimana fa. Grazie alla collaborazione della cooperativa Aurora Domus che gestisce dall’ottobre 2020 l’aspetto sanitario del reparto. Un riconoscente ringraziamento per la collaborazione preziosissima dei nostri confratelli p. José Ángel Aguirre Abaitua, p. Dario Maso, p. Virginio Simoncelli, p. Luigi Lo Stocco, p. Alfonso Oprandi, del confratello Kong Shao Feng, Simon, in attesa di essere ordinato diacono, dei pochi volontari che vengono a trovarli nel pomeriggio, insieme ai confratelli dei piani inferiori per delle visite brevi ma carissime e efficaci, per tenere sempre vivo il dono della chiamata missionaria e vivere con fede e serenità questa tappa importante della vita.
Il mese di maggio, come ogni anno, siamo impegnati a tenere viva la nostra devozione alla Vergine Maria. Ogni giorno, alla sera, ci troviamo per la preghiera del rosario con stile missionario, approfittando delle lingue che conosciamo delle varie missioni in cui abbiamo lavorato. La recita del Rosario siamo soliti farla sia nella nostra cappella sia presso la grotta del nostro parco. Abbiamo anche organizzato il pellegrinaggio al santuario diocesano di Fontanellato, tanto caro alla tradizione Saveriana, con la celebrazione dell’eucarestia presieduta dal padre priore dei Domenicani, p. Riccardo Barile. Non mancano durante la settimana momenti di preghiera (eucarestia, adorazioni, novene, tridui, vespri, lodi e lectio divina) dove tutti sono chiamati ad essere attivi nell’animazione o nella partecipazione anche solo fisica che aiuta tanto la comunità a sentirsi unita e trovare forza nell’amore e nella sofferenza con l’aiuto dei p. Luigi Lo Stocco, p. Virginio Simoncelli e p. Daniele Targa, nel coordinare o animare i vari momenti. Altrettanto importanti sono gli incontri con p. Dario Maso per i programmi culturali e religiosi e l’ ascolto di testimonianze di confratelli di passaggio. Lo stesso vale per gli incontri di animazione di p. Ángel Aguirre Abaitua, sempre nel pomeriggio, per le attività di terapia occupazionale. La presenza, poi, di un’animatrice, una volta alla settimana, con dei laboratori di disegno o altro è un altro grande aiuto.
Un grazie alle gradite brevi visite della Direzione Generale e della Direzione Regionale, così pure dei vari confratelli di passaggio. Un grazie anche al Centro Marini per la collaborazione di visite e scambi di esperienze tra i confratelli residenti al IV Piano e i confratelli che stanno vivendo l’Anno della Saverianità, senza dimenticare le visite avute dai giovani del Volontariato Internazionale Saveriano (XAVI) in partenza per le varie missioni.
La comunità del IV Piano rimane sempre casa per tutti i buoni samaritani. Un caro saluto e abbraccio da noi tutti…uniti sempre nella preghiera e comune vocazione. (Daniele Targa sx)
TAIPEI – TAIWAN – SAN FRANCESCO SAVERIO: “grati di far parte della famiglia Cattolica”
Domenica 24 maggio 2026, l’arcivescovo di Taipei, Thomas Chung An-Zu, ha celebrato la Domenica di Pentecoste nella Chiesa parrocchiale di San Francesco Saverio, guidata dai Missionari Saveriani. Durante la celebrazione eucaristica due adulti hanno ricevuto il sacramento del Battesimo e altri due adulti hanno ricevuto il sacramento della Cresima. Uno di coloro che hanno ricevuto il sacramento del Battesimo è un medico, un urologo che lavora presso il Cardinal Tien Hospital di Taipei. L’altro neofita proviene da una denominazione protestante. Entrambi hanno espresso la loro gratitudine a p. Joe Matteucig per averli accompagnati nel loro cammino di fede e di amore. Sono grati di appartenere alla famiglia Cattolica. LINEE GUIDA DELLA CONFERENZA EPISCOPALE ITALIANA SU ETICA E SOSTENIBILITÀ DELLA FINANZA: “Gli investimenti siano orientati al bene comune”
“La gestione del denaro non è mai neutrale”, ma comporta sempre responsabilità morali e sociali. Per questo gli investimenti devono essere coerenti con la missione della Chiesa e orientati al bene comune. È questo il perno attorno a cui ruota la pubblicazione delle “Linee guida in materia di investimenti etici e sostenibili” della Conferenza episcopale italiana. Un testo, diffuso giovedì 21 maggio 2026, ma approvato dal Consiglio episcopale permanente il 24 marzo 2026, che rivede le indicazioni proposte nel 2020 e che verrà presentato ufficialmente il 9 giugno a Milano, nella sede di Borsa italiana.
Si tratta di un testo che presenta “un aggiornamento necessario, in un mondo che cambia rapidamente”, indirizzato essenzialmente a diocesi, parrocchie ed enti religiosi alle prese con il “risk management” e la gestione di investimenti e portafoglio titoli.
Il documento insiste sul principio della “destinazione universale dei beni”, richiamando il Concilio Vaticano II e la costituzione Gaudium et spes, secondo cui i beni della terra devono essere condivisi equamente tra uomini e popoli, nonché il legame “imprescindibile tra finanza ed ecologia integrale”. Da questo deriva una precisa responsabilità morale anche nelle scelte sugli investimenti.

CIRCA LA FIGURA DEL SAVERIANO GIOVANNI BONARDI
Il 15 maggio 2026 il sito della Direzione Generale aveva caricato il contributo del nostro confratello p. Antonio Trettel sulla figura di p. Giovanni Bonardi: “una figura ancora tutta assolutamente da riscoprire, a mio parere, e da sistemare in bella evidenza, come si merita, nella vita e nella storia Saveriana…”.
Ora il nostro confratello p. Alfiero Ceresoli apre un dialogo, usando il genere epistolario, con l’autore del contributo. Scrive p. Alfiero:
“… ho letto e (confesso) riletto la tua testimonianza su p. Giovanni Bonardi. Grazie. Di fatto sarebbe ora che qualcuno recuperasse tutti i suoi scritti e da questi delineare la figura soprattutto in rapporto al suo pensiero sul tema “consacrazione e missione”. In questo rapporto si scoprirebbe perché poco tempo dopo la scomparsa del Fondatore, p. Bonardi non approvasse i metodi formativi e in generale le manifestazioni di spiritualità della comunità di Parma. Sto dicendo questo documentato dagli atti del Consiglio generale del quale purtroppo non ho le date…”.
PARMA – CASA MADRE: la gioia della condivisione
In una occasione, conversando al telefono, un sacerdote amico della diocesi di Parma mi diceva: "So che la vostra Casa Madre accoglie giornate di ritiro ed è anche un bel centro di spiritualità". "E di spiritualità Saveriana" ho aggiunto io. Un esempio: nei due fine-settimana di maggio 2026, i gruppi della prima comunione di San Secondo (PR) e di San Pancrazio (PR); il gruppo di cresimandi della parrocchia di Pannocchia (PR) e il gruppo di giovanissimi di Langhirano (PR) hanno scelto la Casa Madre dei Saveriani come spazio di ritiro. Oltre ad offrire saloni e spazi (tra l'altro la logistica di Casa Madre è così spaziosa che in un sabato di maggio ho visto presenti comodamente tre diversi gruppi) ci piace, accogliendo i gruppi, condividere l’esperienza di missione e consacrazione ad gentes e ad extra. ROMA – COLLEGIO INTERNAZIONALE CONFORTI E CASA GENERALIZIA: GIORNATA DI RITIRO
I Saveriani che vivono a Roma si sono ritrovati in Viale Vaticano 40 per l’ultima giornata di ritiro dell’anno accademico 2025-2026. I ritiri, quest’anno sono stati animati dalla biblista Rosanna Virgili. Su suggerimento degli stessi Saveriani, nei ritiri sono state previlegiate le figure femminili dell’ Antico e Nuovo Testamento nella storia della Salvezza.
Nell’ultimo ritiro di sabato 23 maggio 2026, l’esegeta Virgili ha fatto notare come con la sua teologia, San Paolo, detronizzi la Legge e la circoncisione, insistendo sulla fede in Cristo come unico mezzo di giustificazione. In questo modo S. Paolo inserisce nella discendenza di Abramo tutti gli uomini e donne per il puro dono della fede. E così egli demolisce il patriarcato nella storia della salvezza e anche quello imperante fra le mura domestiche nell’epoca greco-romana del suo tempo.
Nella celebrazione eucaristica sono stati condivisi alcuni frutti di questo cammino percorso insieme. Il pranzo è stato l’occasione anche per celebrare alcuni compleanni, augurando ai nostri confratelli studenti e professori una proficua sessione degli esami - ormai prossima - per il bene della missione.
VIA TRIONFALE N. 7515 – ROMA: “Tu credevi di aver provocato una fiamma e non sei rimasto che tu, uno stoppino acceso…”
Domenica 24 maggio 2026, la comunità delle Missionarie di Maria – Saveriane di Via Trionfale, Roma, hanno celebrato insieme a 13 confratelli (comunità del Collegio Conforti e comunità della Casa Generalizia) la festa del “Sì” della Venerabile Celestina Bottego al progetto di Fondazione delle Missionarie di Maria-Saveriane. La celebrazione eucaristica nella solennità di Pentecoste, presieduta dal Superiore Generale p. Fernando García Rodríguez, ha messo in risalto il dono del “Soffio” (Musuka, in lingua Musey) dello Spirito nelle origini e crescita delle due famiglie missionarie. Il pranzo, preparato con affetto e tanta energia (muscoli) da tutte le sorelle della comunità è stato un’altra espressione della pluralità e ricchezza dei carismi: piatti tipici del Ciad, del Camerun, del Congo e dell’Italia: bugali, mizuzu (al forno), pesche spigola, sombe, salse, biete, lasagne…
Dopo il saluto di benvenuto della superiora della comunità locale, Bernardete Izabeldos Santos, la veterana delle sorelle in Via Trionfale, Rosa Mancini, così ha introdotto la giornata:
Anche quest’anno ci ritroviamo insieme per fare memoria di quello che accadde 82 anni fa: Madre Celestina con il suo “Sì” si rese pienamente disponibile ad accettare quello che p. Giacomo Spagnolo le aveva ripetutamente chiesto: collaborare con lui nella fondazione dell’Istituto delle Missionarie Saveriane.
A monte di quel “Sì”, è doveroso ricordare p. Giacomo Spagnolo. Egli non era a conoscenza del desiderio di Mons. Guido Maria Conforti di fondare una Congregazione femminile Missionaria, quando p. Faustino Tissot gli disse di interessarsi di trovare la persona adatta per realizzare quel desiderio. A questa proposta, p. Giacomo Spagnolo si limitò a rispondere con un sorriso, lasciando cadere l’argomento. Fu la “voce” interiore a far riemergere quella frase con insistenza, soprattutto durante la preghiera, nella quale chiese a S. Teresa di Lisieux perché lo aiutasse a comprendere la volontà di Dio in proposito. Pensando che Dio si fosse servito di quelle circostanze per suscitare in lui l’interesse alla fondazione, p. Giacomo Spagnolo decise di mantenersi disponibile a ogni nuovo segno della Provvidenza.
Scrive p. Giacomo Spagnolo nel suo diario: “Nel 1942 una certa signorina Vecchi accettò l’invito di interessarsi della fondazione. Tutto sembrava convergere su lei, ma non fu così perché poi ella declinò l’invito. Tu credevi (p. Giacomo si sta rivolgendo a se stesso n.d.r.) di aver provocato una fiamma e non sei rimasto che tu, uno stoppino acceso. Attento a non spegnerti… Basterebbe solo un soffio di vento, di quelli che non mancano mai, quando si tratta di eseguire le opere di Dio. Tra un teorema e l’altro di matematica e di scienza delle costruzioni, mentre ritorni a colloquiare col tuo Signore, ti ritorna alla mente quel progetto…. Non si può lasciarlo languire. Ma sarà proprio questo che devi fare? Mons. Guizzardi, Vescovo Ausiliare di Bologna, non ha dubbi: tu devi interessarti di quell’opera e la tua età è proprio quella giusta per cominciare...”.
Sempre nello stesso diario troviamo, “Parma 2 luglio 1943. Festa del Sacro Cuore. Giorni fa, pensando all’Istituto delle nostre suore missionarie, della cui fondazione da qualche tempo mi interesso, mi è venuta alla mente la signorina Bottego come una persona atta sotto tutti i punti di vista per dare origine ad una siffatta Opera. Alla proposta fattale, rispose negativamente per più di una volta”.
Il giorno 24 maggio del 1944, davanti alla grotta della Vergine di Lourdes a Capriglio, Celestina Bottego pronunciò il suo “Fiat”. E noi tutto questo vogliamo celebrarlo oggi, per esprimere tutta la nostra gratitudine a p. Giacomo e a Madre Celestina per averci fatto esistere come Missionarie di Maria, Saveriane, dandoci la possibilità di collaborare con i Missionari Saveriani per condividere la Buona Notizia del Regno di Dio nell’universo intero. SÃO PAULO – BRASILE - “CADERNOS” del Centro di Studi Missionari Latino-Americano, N. 13: “La missione alla luce dell’incarnazione”.
Dal 23 al 27 febbraio 2026 ci siamo ritrovati a San Paolo per il 14° Incontro del Centro di Studi Missionari Latino-Americano (Cemla) presso la Casa Regionale della Regione Brasile Sud. Erano presenti Rafael López Villaseñor ed Estêvão Raschietti per il Brasile Sud; Tea Frigerio e Beth Espinhara delle Missionarie di Maria-Saveriane; Yeremias Parung Yanuarius dalla Colombia; Gerardo Custodio López e José Martín Mejía Mariscal dal Messico.
“La missione alla luce del mistero dell’Incarnazione” è un tema di fondamentale importanza per ridefinire la missione dal punto di vista biblico, teologico e storico, con le sue implicazioni pastorali, ecclesiologiche e missiologiche, non solo in vista dei processi di inculturazione, del dialogo con le diverse tradizioni religiose e della solidarietà con i sopravvissuti dei contesti di frontiera, ma anche di fronte a una certa involuzione delle Chiese dell’America Latina per l’azione di movimenti carismatici e integralisti che promuovono un clericalismo radicale e un monofisismo legalista mascherato da spiritualità che offende la fede più genuina della Chiesa. L'impegno della pratica e della teologia della missione è quello di riproporre oggi con decisione il tema dell'incarnazione come antidoto alle proposte pastorali disincarnate, elitarie, autoritarie e autoreferenziali che sembrano dominare lo scenario ecclesiale latinoamericano e che pretendono di condurre il popolo di Dio per vie di ideologizzazione, di sottomissione e di alienazione.
Per il prossimo incontro, in programma dal 22 al 26 febbraio 2027 in Messico, abbiamo deciso di proseguire sulla stessa linea, prendendo in considerazione un altro fondamento della fede cristiana: la redenzione. Nella tradizione ecclesiale e missionaria latinoamericana questa redenzione si traduce nella difesa e nella promozione della vita. “MAGNIFICA HUMANITAS”: PRIMA ENCICLICA DI PAPA LEONE XIV
Il 15 maggio 2026 papa Leone XIV ha firmato la sua prima enciclica. Il giorno dopo ha istituito una nuova commissione interdicasteriale. Entrambi gli atti riguardano lo stesso tema: l’intelligenza artificiale. Insieme, i due gesti costituiscono la più significativa risposta istituzionale all’AI da parte di un grande organismo religioso a livello mondiale. L’intelligenza artificiale non è più soltanto un oggetto di riflessione etica. È una realtà che attraversa ormai la vita stessa della Chiesa: la comunicazione, le istituzioni educative, i processi dottrinali, la diplomazia. L’enciclica Magnifica Humanitas è dedicata alla tutela della persona umana nell’epoca dell’intelligenza artificiale. La data ha un evidente peso simbolico: il 15 maggio ricorre il 135º anniversario della Rerum novarum, la grande enciclica di Leone XIII del 1891 sulla condizione dei lavoratori nel pieno dell’industrializzazione. Il parallelismo è esplicito e chiaramente intenzionale. Come il primo Leone aveva collocato la dignità del lavoro davanti agli sconvolgimenti dell’età della fabbrica, così il nuovo Leone colloca la dignità della persona davanti agli sconvolgimenti dell’età algoritmica.

Leone XIV, però, non parte da zero. Nel gennaio 2025, il Dicastero per la Dottrina della Fede e il Dicastero per la Cultura e l’Educazione hanno pubblicato congiuntamente Antiqua et Nova, una nota dottrinale di ampio respiro sul rapporto tra intelligenza artificiale e intelligenza umana, voluta dallo stesso papa Francesco.
O lo stesso documento preparato dalla Commissione Teologica Internazionale, “QUO VADIS, HUMANITAS?”, pubblicato il 9 febbraio 2026 con l’approvazione di Papa Leone XIV.
La tecnologia è uno dei luoghi in cui si decide che cosa significhi essere umani: ogni giorno, concretamente, spesso senza un vero dibattito. Si parla dei “potenziali effetti sull’essere umano e sull’umanità nel suo insieme”. È il riconoscimento che l’intelligenza artificiale solleva domande sulla coscienza, la libertà, la relazione, la creatività: tutto ciò che la tradizione cristiana raccoglie sotto il concetto di imago Dei. E il titolo dell’enciclica, Magnifica Humanitas, lascia intendere che la risposta della Chiesa sarà di affermazione, non di paura: non tecnofobia, ma impegno a magnificare ciò che è propriamente umano.
Christopher Olah, cofondatore di Anthropic e responsabile della ricerca sull’interpretabilità dell’intelligenza artificiale, intervenendo alla presentazione di “Magnifica Humanitas” nell’Aula Nuova del Sinodo, in Vaticano, ha dichiarato che nell’ Intelligenza artificiale: “Troviamo strutture che rispecchiano risultati delle neuroscienze umane. Troviamo prove di introspezione. Troviamo stati interni che rispecchiano funzionalmente gioia, soddisfazione, paura, dolore e disagio. Non so cosa significhi, ma penso che meriti un discernimento continuo”.
Olah ha spiegato, inoltre, che i sistemi di IA “non sono i robot freddi e calcolatori che ci erano stati promessi”, ma “sono fatti di noi, delle nostre parole”. La voce della Chiesa è ancor più necessaria particolarmente su tre punti: il dovere verso i poveri, l’immaginazione morale sul fiorire umano e la natura stessa dei modelli di IA. “Oggi è solo l’inizio, l’avvio di una lunga collaborazione tra coloro che costruiscono questa tecnologia e coloro che possono vedere ciò che noi, dall’interno, non riusciamo a vedere…”. IV FLOOR COMMUNITY – MOTHER HOUSE – PARMA: THE BLESSING OF VISITS
We are delighted to share some news from our beloved community on the IV Floor of the Mother House. We are all doing quite well. The community now consists of 26 confreres, with the latest arrival being Fr Giovanni Querzani, who came directly from the Democratic Republic of the Congo a few weeks ago. Thanks to the collaboration of the Aurora Domus Cooperative, which has been managing the healthcare aspects of the ward since October 2020. A heartfelt thank you for the invaluable collaboration of our confreres Fr José Ángel Aguirre Abaitua, Fr Dario Maso, Fr Virginio Simoncelli, Fr Luigi Lo Stocco, Fr Alfonso Oprandi, our confrere Kong Shao Feng, Simon, who is awaiting ordination as a deacon, and the few volunteers who come to visit them in the afternoon, together with the confreres from the lower floors for brief but deeply cherished and meaningful visits, to keep the gift of the missionary call ever alive and to live this important stage of life with faith and serenity.
As we do every year, throughout May we are committed to keeping our devotion to the Virgin Mary alive. Every evening, we gather to pray the Rosary in a missionary style, making use of the languages we know from the various missions where we have worked. We usually recite the Rosary both in our chapel and at the grotto in our park. We have also organised a pilgrimage to the diocesan shrine of Fontanellato, so dear to the Xaverian tradition, with the celebration of the Eucharist presided over by the Prior of the Dominicans, Fr Riccardo Barile. Throughout the week, there are plenty of opportunities for prayer (Eucharist, adoration, novenas, triduum(s), Vespers, Lauds and lectio divina) where everyone is called upon to play an active role in leading or participating, even if only physically, which greatly helps the community to feel united and find strength in love and suffering, with the help of Fr Luigi Lo Stocco, Fr. Virginio Simoncelli and Fr Daniele Targa in coordinating or leading the various events. Equally important are the meetings with Fr Dario Maso for cultural and religious programmes and listening to testimonies from visiting confreres. The same applies to the animation sessions led by Fr Ángel Aguirre Abaitua, also in the afternoon, for occupational therapy activities. Furthermore, the presence of a facilitator once a week, running drawing workshops or other activities, is another great help.
Thank you for the welcome brief visits from the General Direction and the Regional Direction, as well as from the various confreres passing by. Thanks also to the Marini Centre community for facilitating visits and exchanges of experiences between the confreres residing on the IV Floor and those currently undertaking the Year of the Xaverian Spirituality, not forgetting the visits from the young people of the Xaverian International Volunteering Service (XAVI) who are setting off for their various missions.
The community on the IV Floor remains a home for all good Samaritans. Warm greetings and a hug from all of us… always united in prayer and our shared vocation. (Daniele Targa sx)

On Sunday, May 24, 2026, Archbishop of Taipei, Thomas Chung An-Zu celebrated Pentecost Sunday at the Xaverian Missionaries parish of St. Francis Xavier. During the Eucharistic celebration two adults received the Sacrament of Baptism, and two adults received the Sacrament of Confirmation. One of those who received the Sacrament of Baptism is a medical doctor, a urologist who works at Cardinal Tien Hospital, Taipei. The other neophyte is coming from a Protestant denomination. Both expressed their gratitude to Fr. Joe Matteucig for accompanying them on their faith and love journey. They are grateful to belong to the Catholic Family. GUIDELINES OF THE ITALIAN BISHOPS CONFERENCE ON ETHICS AND SUSTAINABILITY IN FINANCE: “Investments should be oriented towards the common good”
“Money management is never neutral,” but always involves a moral and social responsibility. For this reason, investments must be coherent with the mission of the Church and oriented towards the common good. This is the main theme around which centres the document Linee guida in materia di investimenti etici e sostenibili (Guidelines on Matters of Ethical and Sustainable Financial Investments) published by the Italian Bishops Conference. The text, which was released on Thursday, May 21st, 2026, but approved by the Consiglio Episcopale Permanente on March 24th, 2026, is an amended version of the outlines proposed in 2020. The official presentation of the document will take place on June 9th, in Milan, at the Borsa Italiana (Italian Stock Exchange).
The document contains “a necessary update, considering our fast-changing world”, and is essentially addressed to dioceses, parishes and religious entities that are dealing with risk management and the management of investments and securities portfolios.
The document insists on the principles of “the universal purpose of goods” by referring to the Second Vatican Council – in particular, the constitution Gaudium et spes, which states that the goods of the earth must be equally shared among men and peoples – and the “the crucial link between finance and integral ecology.” All this entails a clear moral responsibility, including when it comes to investment decisions.

ON THE PERSON OF FR. GIOVANNI BONARDI SX
On May 15th, 2026, the website of the GD posted a contribution by our confrere Fr. Antonio Trettel illustrating the personality of Fr. Giovanni Bonardi: “I believe his figure has yet to be fully discovered; he deserves a prominent place in Xaverian life and history…”
Our confrere Fr. Alfiero Ceresoli now begins a dialogue with the author of the contribution by addressing a letter to him. Fr. Alfiero writes:
“I must admit that I have read your testimony about Fr. Giovanni Bonardi several times. Thank you. The time has come for someone to compile all of his writings and, based on them, to sketch a portrait of him, particularly with regard to his ideas on the relationship between “consecration and mission.” This relationship would explain why, shortly after the Founder’s death, Father Bonardi did not approve of the methods of formation and, in general, the forms of spirituality adopted by the community in Parma. What I am saying is documented in the minutes of the General Council whose date, unfortunately, I do not remember…”
PARMA, MOTHER HOUSE: The Joy of Sharing
On one occasion, while we were chatting on the phone, a priest friend of mine from the Diocese of Parma told me: “I know that your Mother House welcomes people for days of retreat and is also a beautiful centre of spirituality.” “And Xaverian spirituality”, I added. Here is an example: in the last two weekends of May 2026, the first-communion groups from the San Secondo Parish and San Pancrazio Parish (Parma), the group of confirmation candidates from the parish in Pannocchia (Parma) and the group of giovanissimi (youngest teenagers) from Langhirano (Parma) chose the Mother House of the Xaverians as the venue for their retreat. In addition to providing meeting rooms and spaces (in fact, the Mother House is so spacious that on a Saturday in May I saw three different groups comfortably gathered there), we enjoy welcoming groups and sharing with them the experience of mission and consecration ad gentes and ad extra. ROME – CONFORTI INTERNATIONAL COLLEGE AND HOUSE OF THE GENERAL DIRECTION: DAY OF RETREAT
The Xaverians living in Rome gathered at Viale Vaticano 40 for the last day of retreat of the academic year 2025-2026. This year, the monthly retreats were led by Bible scholar Rosanna Virgili. Following suggestions by the Xaverians themselves, in all the retreats she focused on women of the Old and New Testament and their role within the history of Salvation.
In the last retreat, on Saturday, May 23rd, 2026, the exegete Virgili pointed out that, through his theology, St Paul dethroned the Law and circumcision and emphasized faith in Christ as the sole means of justification. As a result, by virtue of the sheer gift of faith, all men and women are included in the lineage of Abraham. This is how St Paul moves beyond the patriarchal model present along the history of salvation, while condemning also the patriarchy that dominated within the Greek-Roman families of his age.
Some of the fruits of this journey we have taken together were shared during the Eucharistic celebration. Lunch provided an opportunity to celebrate a few birthdays and to wish our confreres (students and professors) who are currently studying every success for the good of the mission in their upcoming exams.
VIA TRIONFALE NO. 7515, ROME: “You thought you’d sparked a flame, but all that was left was you, a burning wick”
On Sunday, May 24th, 2026, the community of the Missionaries of Mary–Xaverian Sisters residing in Via Trionfale, Rome, celebrated with 13 confreres (from the community of the Conforti College and that of the General House) the Festa del “Si” – the anniversary of the day when the Venerable Celestina Bottego said “yes” to the plan of Founding the Missionaries of Mary–Xaverian Sisters. The Eucharistic celebration on the Solemnity of Pentecost, presided over by the Superior General, Fr. Fernando García Rodríguez, highlighted the gift of the “Breath” (Musuka, in the Musey language) of the Holy Spirit in the origins and growth of the two missionary families. Lunch, which was prepared with love and much energy (using their muscles!) by all the sisters in the community, was yet another expression of the diversity and richness of the charisms: it included traditional dishes from Chad, Cameroon, Congo, and Italy: bugali, mizuzu (baked), sea bass fish, sombe, sauces, biete, lasagne, etc.
The superior of the local community, Bernardete Izabeldos Santos, gave a welcome address, then Rosa Mancini, the eldest among the sisters in Via Trionfale, introduced the day as follows:
Once again, this year, we gather to commemorate what happened 82 years ago: with her “Yes,” Mother Celestina made herself completely available for doing what Fr. Giacomo Spagnolo had repeatedly asked of her: to collaborate with him in founding the Institute of the Xaverian Missionaries.
It is only right that Fr. Giacomo Spagnolo be remembered as a prelude to that “Yes”. He was unaware of Msgr. Guido Maria Conforti’s desire to found a women’s missionary congregation when Fr. Faustino Tissot asked him to help find the right person to fulfil that desire. Father Giacomo Spagnolo simply responded to that request with a smile, letting the matter drop. Then, an inner “voice” kept repeating that request to him, especially during prayer. He asked St Thérèse of Lisieux to intercede so that he might be granted the ability to understand God’s will in that matter. Fr. Giacomo Spagnolo thought that God was making use of those circumstances to inspire in him an interest in the foundation, and decided to remain available to any new sign coming from Divine Providence.
Fr. Giacomo writes in his diary: “In 1942, a certain Miss Vecchi accepted the invitation to devote herself to the foundation. Everything seemed to converge on her but it didn’t, for she eventually changed her mind. You thought [Fr. Giacomo is talking to himself – ed.] you’d sparked a flame, but all that was left is you, a burning wick. Make sure it doesn’t turn off… All it would take is a gust of wind – the kind that’s always there when it comes to carrying out God’s work. You move from one theorem to the next in mathematics and structural engineering, but as you go back to talk with your Lord, that project keeps returning to your mind… One can’t let it fall by the wayside. But, at the end of the day, is this what you must do? Msgr. Guizzardi, Auxiliary Bishop of Bologna, has no doubt: you must take care of that work, you are just the right age to get started…”
In the same diary, one finds: “Parma, July 2nd, 1943. Feast of the Sacred Heart. Few days ago, as I was thinking of the Institute of our missionary sisters to whose foundation I have been devoting my attention for some time, Miss Bottego came to my mind as the most qualified person to undertake this Project. She turned down the proposal more than once.”
On May 24th, 1944, in front of the Grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes in Capriglio, Parma, Celestina Bottego said her “Fiat!”. Today, we wish to celebrate all of this and express our deepest gratitude to Father Giacomo and Mother Celestina for bringing us into being as Missionaries of Mary, Xaverian Sisters, and for offering us the opportunity to work alongside the Xaverian Missionaries in spreading the Good News of the Reign of God throughout the universe. SÃO PAULO – BRAZIL - “CADERNOS” of the Latin American Centre for Missionary Studies, no. 13: “Mission in the light of the Incarnation”.
From 23 to 27 February 2026, we gathered in São Paulo, Brazil, for the 14th Meeting of the Latin American Centre for Missionary Studies (CEMLA) at the Regional House of the Southern Brazil Region. Present were Rafael López Villaseñor and Estêvão Raschietti for Southern Brazil; Tea Frigerio and Beth Espinhara of the Missionaries of Mary-Xaverian Sisters; Yeremias Parung Yanuarius from Colombia; Gerardo Custodio López and José Martín Mejía Mariscal from Mexico.
“Mission in the light of the mystery of the Incarnation” is a topic of fundamental importance for redefining mission from a biblical, theological and historical perspective, with its pastoral, ecclesiological and missiological implications, not only with a view to processes of inculturation, dialogue with different religious traditions and solidarity with those living in frontier contexts, but also in the face of a certain involution within the Churches of Latin America due to the action of charismatic and fundamentalist movements that promote radical clericalism and a legalistic Monophysitism masked as spirituality, which offends the Church’s most genuine faith. The commitment of missionary practice and theology is to resolutely re-propose today the theme of the Incarnation as an antidote to the disembodied, elitist, authoritarian and self-referential pastoral approaches that seem to dominate the Latin American ecclesial landscape and which claim to lead the people of God along paths of ideologization, submission and alienation.
For the next meeting, scheduled for 22–26 February 2027 in Mexico, we have decided to continue along the same lines, focusing on another cornerstone of the Christian faith: redemption. In the Latin American ecclesial and missionary tradition, this redemption translates into the defence and promotion of life. MAGNIFICA HUMANITAS: POPE LEO XIV’S FIRST ENCYCLICAL
On May 15th, 2026, Pope Leo XIV signed his first encyclical. The following day, he established a new inter-dicasterial commission. Both actions deal with the same issue: artificial intelligence. These two actions represent the most significant institutional response to AI by a major global religious institution. AI is not only a subject of ethical reflection, but also a reality that touches on the very life of the Church, including her communication, institutions of education, doctrinal processes and diplomacy. The encyclical Magnifica Humanitas is dedicated to the protection of the human person in the age of artificial intelligence. The date on which the encyclical was signed has obvious symbolic significance: May 15th marks the 135th anniversary of Rerum novarum, Leo XIII’s landmark 1891 encyclical on the condition of workers at the height of the industrial revolution. The parallelism is explicit and clearly intentional.
Just as the earlier Leo placed the dignity of work above the upheavals of the industrial age, so the new Leo places the dignity of the individual above the upheavals of the algorithmic age.

Leo XIV, however, is not starting from scratch. In January 2025, the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith and the Dicastery for Culture and Education jointly published Antiqua et Nova, a wide-ranging doctrinal note on the relationship between artificial intelligence and human intelligence, commissioned by Pope Francis himself.
Or the Document written by the International Theological Commission, “QUO VADIS, HUMANITAS?”, published on 9 February 2026, after obtaining the approval of the Holy Father Pope Leo XIV.
Technology is one of the domains where the meaning of being humans is redefined every day, concretely, and often without a real debate. People talk of the “potential effects on human beings and on humanity as a whole”. There is recognition that artificial intelligence raises questions about consciousness, freedom, relationships and creativity: everything that Christian tradition encompasses under the concept of the imago Dei. The title of the Encyclical, Magnifica Humanitas, suggests that the Church’s response will be one of affirmation, not fear: not technophobia, but a commitment to celebrating what is truly human.
Speaking at the presentation “Magnifica Humanitas” in the Aula Nuova del Sinodo at the Vatican, Christopher Olah, co-founder and interpretability research lead at Anthropic, stated that in artificial intelligence: We find structures that mirror results from human neuroscience. We find evidence of introspection. We find internal states that functionally mirror joy, satisfaction, fear, grief, and unease. I don’t know what that means, but I think it warrants ongoing discernment.
Moreover, Olah clarified that IA systems “are not the cold, calculating robots we were promised” but “are made from us, from our words.” The voice of the Church is much more necessary especially concerning three issues: our duty to the global poor, the need for moral imagination regarding human flourishing and the need for discernment on the nature of AI models. “Today is just the beginning – the start of a long collaboration between those of us who are building this and those who can see what we, from inside, cannot.” (excerpts from contributions by Rev.
