Buona Quaresima!

Carissimi confratelli, da una settimana abbiamo iniziato il cammino quaresimale. Un rito semplice, un versetto biblico ha accompagnato il segno delle ceneri sulle nostre fronti: “convertitevi e credete al Vangelo” (Mc 1, 15). L’essenziale è lì: la parola di Dio come luce e forza di cambiamento della nostra vita.

La Quaresima è una preparazione per vivere l’avvenimento centrale della nostra vita: la passione, morte e risurrezione di Gesù Cristo. Ogni anno la Chiesa, quale madre, ci invita a percorrere questa strada. Accogliamola con gioia e fiducia! Le cose che si ripetono spesso rischiano di diventare un’abitudine e dunque perdere quella forza che le caratterizza. È ciò che può accadere anche durante il tempo quaresimale e addirittura nel tempo pasquale, se non facciamo attenzione.

Papa Francesco, come fa ogni anno, ci ha offerto un messaggio, il cui titolo è un versetto del Vangelo di Matteo: «Per il dilagare dell’iniquità, l’amore di molti si raffredderà» (24,12). Vorrei sottolineare alcuni punti della sua riflessione per camminare insieme con la Chiesa intera in questo tempo di grazia. Lasciamoci guidare dalle sue parole!

«Di fronte ad eventi dolorosi, alcuni falsi profeti inganneranno molti, tanto da minacciare di spegnere nei cuori la carità che è il centro di tutto il Vangelo».

I falsi profeti

Il Papa si chiede: «quali forme assumono i falsi profeti?». Ne sottolinea due:

1. «Essi sono come “incantatori di serpenti”, ossia approfittano delle emozioni umane per render schiave le persone e portarle dove vogliono loro». Menziona le lusinghe del piacere di pochi istanti, e l’illusione del denaro.
2. «Altri falsi profeti sono quei ‘ciarlatani’ che offrono soluzioni semplici e immediate». E qui parla tra gli altri di «quanti ancora sono irretiti in una vita completamente virtuale…»

“Da sempre il demonio, che è ‘menzognero e padre della menzogna’ (Gv 8,44), presenta il male come bene e il falso come vero, per confondere il cuore dell’uomo.” Ognuno di noi, perciò, è chiamato a discernere nel suo cuore ed esaminare se è minacciato dalle menzogne di questi falsi profeti.

Un cuore freddo

A continuazione, Papa Francesco invita a chiederci: «come si raffredda in noi la carità? Quali sono i segnali che ci indicano che in noi l’amore rischia di spegnersi?». Ed egli afferma,

1. «Ciò che spegne la carità è anzitutto l’avidità per il denaro» con le conseguenze che ne derivano.
2. «Anche il creato è testimone silenzioso di questo raffreddamento della carità».
3. «L’amore si raffredda anche nelle nostre comunità. I segni più evidenti di questa mancanza di amore sono: l’accidia egoista, il pessimismo sterile, la tentazione di isolarsi e di impegnarsi in continue guerre fratricide, la mentalità mondana che induce ad occuparsi solo di ciò che è apparente, riducendo in tal modo l’ardore missionario»

Cosa fare?

«La Chiesa ci offre in questo tempo di Quaresima il dolce rimedio della preghiera, dell’elemosina e del digiuno».

1. «Dedicando più tempo alla preghiera, permettiamo al nostro cuore di scoprire le menzogne segrete con le quali inganniamo noi stessi per cercare finalmente la consolazione in Dio».
2. «L’esercizio dell’elemosina ci libera dall’avidità e ci aiuta a scoprire che l’altro è mio fratello: ciò che ho non è mai solo mio. Come vorrei che l’elemosina si tramutasse per tutti in un vero e proprio stile di vita… che anche nei nostri rapporti quotidiani, davanti a ogni fratello che ci chiede un aiuto, noi pensassimo che lì c’è un appello della divina Provvidenza».
3. «Il digiuno, infine, toglie forza alla nostra violenza, ci disarma e costituisce un’importante occasione di crescita».

Il fuoco della Pasqua

«Invito soprattutto i membri della Chiesa a intraprendere con zelo il cammino della Quaresima, sorretti dall’elemosina, dal digiuno e dalla preghiera. Se a volte la carità sembra spegnersi in tanti cuori, essa non lo è nel cuore di Dio! Egli ci dona sempre nuove occasioni affinché possiamo ricominciare ad amare».

Buona Quaresima!

Dear brothers, last week we began our Lenten journey. A simple rite and a biblical verse accompanied the sign of the ashes upon our forehead: “repent and believe in the Gospel” (Mk 1:15). This is the essence of our Lenten experience: the Word of God that gives us the light and strength we need in order to change our life.

Lent is a preparation for the celebration of the most important event of our life: the passion, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Every year the Church, as a mother, invites us to travel this path. Let us embrace it with joy and trust! Things that we repeat often risk becoming a habit and, consequently, they can lose their impact. If we are not careful, this can also happen during Lent and even during the Easter season.

Pope Francis, as he does every year, offers us a message, whose title is taken from the Gospel of Matthew: «Because of the increase of iniquity, the love of many will grow cold» (24:12). I would like to stress some points of his reflection so that we can walk together with the entire Church during this time of grace. Let us open our hearts to be guided by his words!

«Amid great trials, false prophets would lead people astray and the love that is the core of the Gospel would grow cold in the hearts of many».

The false prophets

The Pope asks: «what guise do false prophets assume?». He emphasizes two of these guises:

1. «They can appear as “snake charmers”, who manipulate human emotions in order to enslave others and lead them where they would have them go». He mentions the temptation of momentary pleasures and the dream of wealth.
2. «False prophets can also be ‘charlatans’ who offer easy and immediate solutions». The Pope also mentions «the many who are ensnared in a thoroughly “virtual” existence …»

“The devil, who is “a liar and the father of lies” (Jn 8:44), has always presented evil as good, falsehood as truth.” Each one of us is therefore called to examine his heart and discern whether or not he is tempted by the lies of these false prophets.

A cold heart

Pope Francis also invites us to ask ourselves: «how can charity turn cold in us? What are the signs  that indicate that our love is beginning to cool?». The Pope says,

1. «More than anything else, what destroys charity is greed for money with all the consequences it brings.
2. «Creation itself becomes a silent witness to this cooling of charity».
3. «Love can also grow cold in our own communities. The most evident signs of this lack of love: selfishness and spiritual sloth, sterile pessimism, the temptation to self-absorption, constant warring among ourselves, and the worldly mentality that makes us concerned only for appearances, and thus lessens our missionary zeal»

What are we to do?

«The Church offers us in the Lenten season the soothing remedy of prayer, almsgiving and fasting».

1. «By devoting more time to prayer, we enable our hearts to root out our secret lies and forms of self-deception, and then to find the consolation God offers».
2. «Almsgivingsets us free from greed and helps us to regard our neighbour as a brother or sister. What I possess is never mine alone. How I would like almsgiving to become a genuine style of life for each of us! … I would also hope that, even in our daily encounters with those who beg for our assistance, we would see such requests as coming from God himself».
3. «Fastingweakens our tendency to violence; it disarms us and becomes an important opportunity for growth».

The fire of Easter

«Above all, I urge the members of the Church to take up the Lenten journey with enthusiasm, sustained by almsgiving, fasting and prayer. If, at times, the flame of charity seems to die in our own hearts, know that this is never the case in the heart of God! He constantly gives us a chance to begin loving anew».
