Per la Giornata mondiale dei Poveri

1642/500

Carissimi confratelli,

Invitiamo quindi a fare questi passi:

Fraternamente,

I confratelli della DG

Dear brothers,

At the end of the Jubilee of Mercy, Pope Francis announced the celebration of the First World Day of the Poor, to be held on the 33rd Sunday in Ordinary time, which falls this year on Sunday, 19 November.

In the letter he wrote to the entire Church for this occasion –Let us love, not with words but with deeds -, Pope Francis explains that he wanted to offer this Day to the Church “so that throughout the world Christian communities can become an ever greater sign of Christ’s charity for the least and those most in need”. He also invites “the whole Church, and men and women of goodwill everywhere, to turn their gaze on this day to all those who stretch out their hands and plead for our help and solidarity”.

This Day, continues Pope Francis, “is meant, above all, to encourage believers to react against a culture of discard and waste, and to embrace the culture of encounter”. This is a special invitation to become aware of the individualism and indifference that are spreading, and to oppose the egoism and consumerism, whose criterion is “discard and waste”, looking beyond ourselves and opening up to “sharing with the poor through concrete signs of solidarity and fraternity”.

Finally, the Pope asks his “brother bishops, all priests and deacons, consecrated persons … to help make this World Day of the Poor a tradition that concretely contributes to evangelization in today’s world”.

We, the Xaverian Missionaries, welcome this Day as a gift from the Lord. We are convinced that sharing with the poor “enables us to understand the Gospel in its most profound truth”, and that the love of God passes through the way we look upon our most needy brothers and sisters (cf. C 9; 27).

We want to commit ourselves to ensure that this World Day of the Poor achieves the goal proposed by Pope Francis to the Church and, consequently, to all of us. We therefore invite you to take the following steps:

  1. Read the letter Let us love, not with words but with deeds personally and carefully and meditate upon it.
  2. Share your reflections at community level.
  3. Look for some concrete gestures of sharing and solidarity. There are many forms of poverty. We should carefully avoid giving only from what we can spare.
  4. Animate, educate and form the Christian communities and the various groups we accompany to embrace the spirit proposed by Pope Francis for this Day.

We are called to «reach out to the poor, encounter them, look them in the eye, embrace them and make them feel the warmth of the love that breaks down the barriers of solitude».

«If you wish to honor the body of Christ, do not disdain him when he is naked; do not honor the Christ in the Eucharist with silk vestments, whilst outside the temple you ignore the Christ who is afflicted by the cold and nakedness» (St. John Chrysostom).

Fraternally,

The confreres of the General Direction
