“Mi si chiede di dire qualche cosa degli 80 anni da me trascorsi nell’Istituto religioso missionario S. Francesco Saverio. Dirò soltanto come sorse in me la vocazione alla vita missionaria. Avevo 18 anni, ogni mattina partecipavo alla santa messa delle ore 7.00 nella mia chiesa parrocchiale e ricevevo la comunione. Dopo la messa, dedicavo un po’ di tempo al doveroso ringraziamento. Una mattina dissi a Gesù: Che cosa posso fare per esprimere la mia gratitudine a te che ti sei dato tutto a me?

La risposta del Signore fu immediata: Dedicati alla vita missionaria! E contemporaneamente, sentii in me una sensibilissima forza (in precedenza mai sperimentata) che mi sostenne nell’affrontare e superare tutti gli ostacoli.

Fino a quel momento, pur stimando e ammirando i missionari, non mi era mai passato per la mente l’idea di farmi missionario. Nel corso dei miei 80 anni nell’Istituto si sono avvicendate varie fasi delle quali mi è impossibile parlarne. Dico soltanto che ogni bene viene da Dio: Omne bonum a Deo est.” (Francesco Cavallo sx, 12 settembre 2021)

“I am asked to say something about the 80 years I spent in the Missionary Religious Institute of St. Francis Xavier. I will only say how the vocation to missionary life arose in me. I was 18-year-old. Every morning I attended the 7:00-am Holy Mass in my parish church and received communion. After Mass, I used to devote some time for an appropriate thanksgiving. One morning I said to Jesus: “What can I do to express my gratitude to you, who have given yourself totally to me?”   

The Lord’s response was immediate: “Dedicate yourself to missionary life!” At the same time, I experienced in myself a strength, a force never experienced before. This strength helped me to face and overcome all obstacles. Although I esteemed and admired missionaries, until that moment the idea of becoming a missionary myself had never crossed my mind. During my 80 years in the Xaverian Congregation, there have been various phases of which it is impossible for me to talk about. I only say that all good comes from God: “Omne bonum a Deo est.”  (Fr.
