Oltre 420.000 bambini attualmente sono colpiti da livelli pericolosi di scarsità idrica e condizioni di siccità in tre Paesi nella regione amazzonica: Brasile, Colombia e Perù. A lanciare l’allarme sulla siccità da record — che dura dall’anno scorso e ha lasciato i fiumi del bacino amazzonico ai minimi storici – è l’Unicef che sottolinea come tale crisi stia colpendo duramente i bambini e le comunità fluviali e autoctone. La grave siccità colpisce duramente migliaia di famiglie che fanno affidamento sui fiumi per trasportare e accedere al cibo, all’acqua, al carburante e alle forniture mediche di base, oltre che per recarsi a scuola. Nella sola regione amazzonica brasiliana si stima che più di 1.700 scuole e oltre 760 centri sanitari sono stati chiusi.

More than 420,000 children are currently affected by dangerous low water levels and drought conditions in three countries of the Amazon region: Brazil, Colombia, and Perù. Raising the alarm over the record-breaking drought - which has been ongoing since last year and has left rivers in the Amazon basin at historic lows - is Unicef, which points out that this crisis is severely affecting children and Indigenous communities living along the waterways. The severe drought is hitting hard, especially for the thousands of families who rely on rivers to transport and access food, water, fuel, and basic medical supplies, as well as to get to school. In the Brazilian Amazon region alone, it is estimated that more than 1,700 schools and over 760 health centers have been closed.
