Il 20 agosto le Missionarie di Maria-Saveriane celebrano il 42° anniversario della nascita al cielo della Madre Celestina Bottego (20 agosto 1980), fondatrice - con il saveriano p. Giacomo M. Spagnolo sx – della Società Missionaria di Maria (Missionarie di Maria – Saveriane)

L’ultimo giorno, mentre le condizioni fisiche andavano peggiorando, la Madre Celestina Bottego ripeteva spesso “Sì, sì”. Altre volte: “Eccomi!”. Il vescovo saveriano Mons. Gianni Gazza sx celebrò l’Eucaristia nella sua camera. Al momento della comunione, quasi a riassumere il senso di tutta la sua vita, la Madre aprì le braccia nel suo abituale gesto di accoglienza e pronunciò con voce chiara e viso luminoso un “Amen” che, per la sua forza e intensità, rimase impresso profondamente nelle persone presenti. Spirò dolcemente pochi minuti dopo la mezzanotte.

Significativa la sintesi tracciata da Mons. Giovanni Gazza sx, che conosceva bene la Madre, nel rito di commiato celebrato nella cappella di Casa Madre:

Madre: questo titolo in lei così singolare e direi anche così adeguato, così confacente. Dando inizio all'Istituto delle Missionarie, la sua maternità veramente è diventata tanto grande, grande come il mondo. E qui la Madre ha terminato la sua vicenda umana e l'ha terminata esattamente come l'aveva vissuta. In questi giorni, vivendo qui vicino a voi, ho potuto cogliere un clima di serenità, di fede, di amore. É l'eredità più bella che la Madre vi ha lasciato, perché in questo vi è quella fede per cui ha vissuto, per cui ha creato l'Istituto per le Missioni, per cui ha dato la sua vita. On August 20^th, the Xaverian Missionary Sisters of Mary celebrate the 42^nd anniversary of Mother Celestina Bottego’s “birth into heaven” (August 20^th, 1980). She is the foundress  – with Fr. Giacomo M. Spagnolo s.x. – of the Missionary Society of Mary (i.e. the Xaverian Missionary Sisters of Mary).

In her very last day, while her physical condition was deteriorating, Mother Celestina Bottego kept repeating “Yes, yes” and “Here I am!”. The Xaverian bishop, Msgr. Gianni Gazza s.x. celebrated Mass in her bedroom. At communion, as if summarising the meaning of her entire life, she opened wide her arms in her typical gesture of welcoming and, with clear voice and shining face, uttered an “Amen!” that, because of its strength and intensity, left a deep impression on those then present. Few minutes after midnight, she peacefully breathed her last.

Worthy of mention is the short description of the mother made by Msgr. Giovanni Gazza s.x., who knew her very well, in the course of the funeral celebrated in the Chapel of the [Xaverian sisters’] Mother House:

Mother: such a unique title was very appropriate for her, very befitting. By starting the Institute of the Missionary Sisters, her maternity became truly great, as great as the world. Here, the mother ended her human journey; she ended it in the same fashion as she lived it. In the last few days, while I was staying here near you all, I have been experiencing a mood of peace, faith and love. This is the most beautiful legacy the mother bequeathed to you, for it bears that faith for which she lived, for which she created the Institute of the Missions, for which she gave up her life.  (Fernanda Tettamanzi m.m.x.)
