Lo statistico Roberto Volpi, nell’inserto La Lettura del Corriere della Sera del 22 dicembre 2024, dedica una pagina intera ad una analisi dei dati della partecipazione religiosa (dati censimento istat).

La necessità di un ripensamento delle modalità di annuncio, di accompagnamento e di dialogo con la società è più che mai urgente. La risposta a questa tendenza richiede un impegno rinnovato per avvicinarsi alle nuove generazioni, comprendere le loro domande e offrire spazi di spiritualità capaci di parlare alle loro vite. La strada da percorrere è complessa, ma anche carica di opportunità per una Chiesa che desideri rinnovarsi e rispondere alle sfide del tempo presente.

Almeno due i dati interessanti da rilevare:

1) Tra il 2003 e il 2023 la proporzione di quanti frequentano regolarmente la chiesa si è dimezzata, passando dal 35,4 al 17,9 per cento; mentre quella di quanti non la frequentano mai è raddoppiata, passando dal 15,2 al 31,5 per cento.

2) Il crollo è soprattutto dai 14 ai 34 anni. A 18-19 anni per ogni giovane che va in chiesa regolarmente 9 non ci mettono mai piede.

Sono dati da essere tenuti in considerazione per la missione di oggi e domani in Italia e in Europa.

The statistician Roberto Volpi, in the insert La Lettura of the daily Corriere della Sera, December 22^nd, 2024, dedicates a whole page to an analysis of the data on religious participation (ISTAT census data).

The need for a rethinking of the ways of proclamation, accompaniment and dialogue with society is more urgent than ever. The response to this trend requires a renewed commitment to approach the new generations, understand their questions and offer spaces for spirituality capable of speaking to their lives. The road ahead is complex, but also full of opportunities for a Church that wishes to renew itself and respond to the challenges of the present time.

Two interesting elements emerge in the article:

1) Between 2003 and 2023, the proportion of those who regularly attend church has decreased by half, going from 35.4 to 17.9 percent; the number of those who never attend has doubled, from 15.2 to 31.5 percent;

2) The drop is especially greater among those who are 14 to 34. Only one out of ten young people 18 to 19 attends church regularly, while the rest never sets foot to church.

These data need to be taken into consideration for today and tomorrow's mission in Italy and Europe.
