“Ravviva il dono di Dio che è in te (2 Tm 1, 6)”: è stato il tema del convegno internazionale, tenutosi a Roma, per la formazione permanente dei sacerdoti promosso dal 6 al 10 febbraio dal Dicastero per il clero, in collaborazione con il Dicastero per l’evangelizzazione. Sullo sfondo c’è il riferimento alla Ratio Fundamentalis Institutionis Sacerdotalis. In un video trasmesso all’inizio dei lavori, papa Francesco ha ricordato a tutti i partecipanti che non si tratta di “splendidi trattati presentati da relatori che pensano di avere la ricetta in tasca,  piuttosto dal vissuto, dalle criticità, cercando di offrire piste di ricerca e di azione”.

Nella sua relazione, il card. Lazzaro You Heung-sik  (Prefetto del Dicastero per il clero) ha sottolineato: “tanti preti sono pastori generosi e fedeli, e non di rado anche eroi, ma molti sono stanchi e scoraggiati, spiazzati dalle sfide della società odierna e dal carico che essi portano”. Proprio partendo dalla realtà della vita e della missione presbiterale, il cardinale ha evidenziato l’importanza di offrire “sostegno e accompagnamento e quindi l’istanza della formazione permanente”.

Il card. Luis Antonio Tagle (Pro-Prefetto per la Sezione per la prima evangelizzazione e le nuove Chiese particolari del Dicastero per l’evangelizzazione), ha ribadito che  “la parola ‘formazione’ non può più essere identificata solo con gli anni trascorsi in seminario. L’ordinazione presbiterale non segna il traguardo della formazione: ciò erroneamente “significa niente più studio, niente più preghiera, niente più direzione spirituale, niente più guida, niente più stile di vita semplice, niente più disciplina”. La posta in gioco, dunque, è come si possano “condurre i ministri ordinati che pensano di non aver più bisogno di formazione a una sana accettazione della necessità della stessa”. “Abbiamo bisogno - ha proseguito il card. Tagle - di essere continuamente formati. Questa umiltà, ci aiuterà a recuperare nuova energia e ad evitare un falso senso di superiorità e di diritto”; al tempo stesso, la gente “riceverà anche il servizio di qualità che merita”. 

“Oggi nel mondo c’è un rinnovato apprezzamento dell’identità e della diversità culturale”, tuttavia nella società contemporanea si assiste alla “tendenza ad assolutizzare e glorificare la propria cultura, con la conseguenza di essere ostili e perfino violenti nei confronti di quanti appartengono ad altre…”.

Il teologo Severino Dianich e professore anche di molti nostri confratelli nel passato, nella sua relazione al Convegno ha affermato: “Se manca un impegno serio per la formazione permanente, il rischio per i preti è quello di scoraggiarsi”.

“Fan into flame the gift of God that you possess” (2Tim 1:6) is the theme of the international conference on the on-going formation of priests sponsored by the Dicastery for the Clergy, in collaboration with the Dicastery for Evangelisation, that was held in Rome from February 6^th to 10^th. The event made constant reference to the Ratio Fundamentalis Institutionis Sacerdotalis. Through a video screened at the opening of the conference, Pope Francis reminded all participants that we are not talking about “wonderful treatises presented by speakers who think they have the recipe in their pocket, rather from experience, from critical issues, trying to offer avenues for research and action.”

In his report, Card. Lazzaro You Heung-sik, Prefect of the Dicastery for the Clergy, pointed out: “Many priests are generous and loyal shepherds, not infrequently they are even heroes. However, many of them are tired and discouraged, taken aback by the challenges of nowadays society and the burden they have to carry.” In view of priests’ real life and mission, the Cardinal emphasised the importance to offer “support and accompaniment and, therefore, [to meet] the need of on-going formation.”

Card. Luis Antonio Tagle, Pro-Prefect for the Section of Evangelization and New Particular Churches of the Dicastery for Evangelization, re-affirmed that “the word ‘formation’ can no longer be identified with only the years spent in the seminary. Ordination to the priesthood does not mark the final goal of formation: this erroneous vision “means no more study, no more prayer, no more spiritual direction, no more guidance, no more simple life style, no more discipline.” Hence, what is at stake is how to “lead ordained ministers that think they do not need formation any more to a healthy acceptance of the fact that they actually need it.” “We need – continued Card. Tagle – to be continuously formed. Such humility will help us retrieve new energy and avoid a false sense of superiority and righteousness.” At the same time, people “will receive also that service of quality which they deserve.”

“In the world, today, there is a renewed appreciation for cultural identity and diversity;” nevertheless, in contemporary society one observes a “tendency to absolutize and glorify one’s own culture, which leads to become hostile and even violent towards those who belong to other cultures…”

Theologian Severino Dianich, former professor of many of our confreres, in his report to the Conference affirmed: “Lack of serious commitment to on-going formation may lead priests to face the risk of discouragement”.
