Nella vita presente e nell’ordine naturale, non vi è cosa più preziosa del tempo, che il Signore ci concede nella sua bontà infinita. Il tempo è prezioso quanto è preziosa la grazia divina, che ad ogni istante dovremmo accrescere, quanto è prezioso il tesoro di meriti che ognuno può incessantemente accumulare, quanto è preziosa la gloria celeste, che coll’esercizio delle buone opere sempre più aumenta e grandeggia pel cristiano. Ma per un altro motivo non meno forte è prezioso; esso è breve ed irreparabile. Passa colla rapidità del baleno, e la velocità del treno-lampo, della luce e del suono, vengono meno al paragone. E mentre a tutto si può rimediare, al tempo perduto più non si rimedia. Fugit irreparabile tempus! Eppure, questa è la cosa di cui dalla grande maggioranza degli uomini si tien poco conto e si spreca con leggerezza incalcolabile. Persuaso di tutto questo un uomo di Dio, che la vita trascorre nell’esercizio delle più elette virtù evangeliche e nel giovare al prossimo, suol raccomandare a quanti l’avvicinano due cose: il Crocefisso e l’orologio. Il primo perché è il grande Maestro di ogni perfezione, ed il secondo per misurare con diligenza il tempo onde non perderne un solo istante. (S. Guido Maria Conforti, da VITA NOSTRA a. In this life, as in the order of nature, nothing is more precious than the time which the Lord gives us out of his infinite goodness. Time is as precious as divine grace. We should strive to deepen our living in God’s grace by unceasingly increasing our treasure of merits, which is as precious as the heavenly glory that continuously grows and expands for the Christian who practices good deeds. Time is also precious for another equally strong reason: time is short and irreparable. It passes with the swiftness of lightning, and the speed of a bullet train – light and sound pale in comparison. While everything can be remedied, lost time cannot be remedied. Fugit irreparabile tempus! And yet, this is the thing which the majority of men takes little into account and, in fact, wastes with incalculable recklessness. A true man of God, who is much aware of all of this and spends his life practicing the greatest of the Gospel virtues and helping his neighbour, usually recommends two things to those who approach him: the Crucifix and the clock.
