L’anno di pre-noviziato è cominciato nella festa della Esaltazione della Santa Croce (14 settembre 2021) e si è concluso con la festa della Natività di S. Giovanni Battista (24 giugno 2022). La morte porta sempre ad una vita nuova. Stiamo ora preparandoci per l’inizio del Noviziato il 2 Luglio 2022.

L’anno di pre-noviziato che si è appena concluso a Kilomoni (Diocesi di Uvira) è stato pieno di sfide. Infatti, a differenza dei precedenti anni di formazione, quando trovavamo sempre tutte le cose già messe in ordine da qualcun altro, quest’anno abbiamo dovuto darci da fare noi stessi con pazienza per equipaggiare e costruire la comunità. È per questo che nel nostro progetto comunitario di vita abbiamo sottolineato due parole: contributo e costruzione.

Equipaggiare progressivamente la casa, fissare degli orari, imparare a piantare l’erba e i fiori del giardino per trasformare il panorama sabbioso in uno verde e colorato, comprare polli e vederli crescere fino a esser in grado di deporre le uova, esplorare nuovi campi di apostolato, fare amici, creare contatti e acquisire potenziali collaboratori, imparare la strada per l’ospedale ed il mercato e apprendere come fare le spese, ecc., tutto ciò ha richiesto un sacco di flessibilità secondo lo spirito della docibilitas.  Ci ha fatto pensare all’esperienza dei primi missionari – pionieri che vennero a mani vuote ma che a poco a poco misero in piedi delle strutture. Abbiamo pensato ad alcuni di loro che, per amore verso la missione e in fedeltà a Dio, 58 anni fa hanno bagnato col loro sangue questa stessa terra di Uvira su cui camminiamo oggi.

Il vedere muratori appesi alle impalcature tutto il giorno che approfittavano dei tempi di sosta per provare i salmi responsoriali della Messa domenicale senza mostrare alcun segno di fatica o tristezza nei volti ci ha insegnato molte cose riguardo alla vita; ci ha spinto ad essere grati e soddisfatti con quel “poco” che abbiamo perché altri, alcuni più giovani di noi, lavorano duro per ricevere meno di quello che la Provvidenza ci ha già dato.

Dopo il nostro arrivo, la casa in cui viviamo era in costruzione e i lavori continuano. Ma nel mezzo di martellate e il frastuono di saldatrici e smerigliatrici, tra le urla di muratori, e il fragore delle onde del lago Tanganica e il fischiare del vento, abbiamo cercato di imparare a far spazio al silenzio interiore ed attorno a noi per ascoltare colui che ci chiama a seguirlo.

Abbiamo marcato il nostro territorio come un leone. Ora vogliamo imparare ad essere a casa. Questo è il tema centrale del nostro ritiro all’inizio dell’anno di noviziato. Vogliamo imparare ad essere a casa con il Signore (preghiera), a casa con la nostra umanità (conoscenza di sé), a casa nella famiglia Saveriana (senso di appartenenza), a casa nella Chiesa (consacrazione religiosa) e, infine, a casa con il mondo (missione). The Pre-novitiate year begun on the feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross (September 14^th, 2021) was concluded the feast of the Nativity of John the Baptist (June 24^th, 2022). Death always leads to new life. We are now preparing for the beginning of the Novitiate on July 2^nd, 2022.

This year of the Pre-novitiate that we have concluded in Kilomoni (Uvira Diocese) was a year full of challenges. Indeed, unlike the previous years of formation where we always found things already put in place by someone else, it was each of us who patiently participated in equipping and building the community. That’s why in our community life project we underlined two words: contribution and construction. 

Equipping the house gradually, establishing schedules, learning to plant lawn and flowers in order to transform the sandy landscape into green and colorful landscape, buying chicks and seeing them grow to laying eggs, exploring new fields of apostolates, making friends, knowing contact persons and potential collaborators, discovering the way to the hospital and the market and learning to make purchases, etc. all this required us a lot of flexibility in a spirit of docibilitas. It made us think of the experience of the first missionaries-those pioneers who came empty-handed but who gradually put structures in place. We thought of some of them who, out love for the mission and in fidelity to God, bathed this same land of Uvira we tread upon with their own blood 58 years ago.

Seeing masons hanging on scaffoldings the whole day and taking advantage from their break time to rehearse responsorial psalms for Sunday mass without displaying any signs of fatigue or sadness on their faces taught us many things about life; it drove us to be grateful and to be content with the “little” we have because others, some younger than us, work hard to get less than what the Providence has already given us.

On our arrival, the house we live in was under construction and work continues. But in the midst of hammer blows and the roar of the welder and the grinder; amid shouts of masons, the crashing sound of the waves of Lake Tanganyika and the whistling of the wind, we tried to learn to make a room for silence inside and around ourselves in order to listen to the one who calls us to his sequela.

Like a lion, we have now marked our territory. We now want to "learn to be at home". This is the central theme of our retreat of the beginning of the Novitiate year. Indeed, we want to learn to be at home with the Lord (prayer), to be at home in our humanity (self-knowledge), to be at home in the Xaverian family (sense of belonging), to be at home in the Church (religious consecration), and finally to be at home in the world (mission).
