Nel distretto di Kono, Sierra Leone, dove nel 2017 è stato scoperto uno dei venti diamanti più grandi al mondo, la ricchezza del suolo non allevia la povertà delle comunità locali, ma è, anzi, la principale causa del dilagare della piaga del lavoro minorile. E non è l’unica schiavitù cui sono sottoposti i più piccoli. Nel Paese, infatti, duramente provato dalla guerra civile conclusa nel 2002, altri drammi si consumano ancora oggi quotidianamente: quello dei bambini-soldato, come anche quello dei matrimoni forzati. Lo denuncia ActionAid, attiva nel Paese dal 1988, che collabora con le istituzioni per proteggere i minori e reintegrarli nel sistema scolastico. 

In 2017, one of the world’s 20 largest diamonds was discovered in Kono District, Sierra Leone. However, such richness of the soil does not alleviate the poverty of local communities, on the contrary, it is the main reason behind the scourge of child labour. In fact, this is not the only form of slavery to which the youngest children are subjected. Indeed, in the country, which was sorely tried by the civil war ended in 2002, other dramas are still unfolding daily, such as that of child soldiers, and that of forced marriages. This is reported by ActionAid, which is active in the country since 1988, and collaborates with institutions to protect minors and reintegrate them into the school system.
