“Esulterò grandemente nel Signore e si rallegrerà l'anima mia nel mio Dio, perché mi ha rivestito con le vesti della salvezza e mi ha ricoperto con il manto della giustizia, come uno sposo si mette un diadema e una sposa si adorna dei suoi gioielli.” (Isaia 61:10). Questa breve lettura delle lodi nella commemorazione della Beata Vergine Maria Regina del Rosario, il 7 ottobre scorso, esprime bene il mio stato d'animo e i miei sentimenti più profondi… Chi avrebbe mai pensato che un semplice chierichetto della chiesa cattedrale di Semarang, diventasse dopo tanti anni un vescovo missionario proprio in occasione della festa del nome della protettrice della parrocchia, la Beata Vergine Maria Regina del Rosario. Nulla succede per caso per coloro che credono.

Il 6 luglio 1997, ventiquattro anni fa, la notte prima del giorno della mia ordinazione sacerdotale presso la Cappella del Seminario a Yogyakarta, ho sentito da mia madre una confidenza che non avevo mai sentito prima. Mentre ero ancora nel suo grembo, era arrivata una lettera dal seminario minore della diocesi. L’indirizzo della lettera però era  sbagliato. Doveva essere una lettera di accettazione del seminario indirizzata ad un altro ragazzo, figlio del nostro vicino di casa che poi è diventato un gesuita.  Il profeta Geremia narra la sua vocazione in questi termini: “Prima che io ti formassi nel grembo, ti ho conosciuto, e prima che tu uscissi dal seno, ti ho santificato; profeta per le genti ti ho costituito” (Geremia 1,5). Davvero, chi può sottrarsi al grande disegno di Dio?... Ringrazio i Missionari Saveriani che mi hanno preparato e formato ad accettare questo servizio pastorale nel luogo in cui la missione saveriana ad gentes è iniziata settant'anni fa… (+ Vitus sx, Vescovo di Padang, Sumatra, Indonesia)

I exult for joy in the Lord, my soul rejoices in my God, for he has clothed me in garments of salvation, he has wrapped me in a cloak of saving justice, like a bridegroom wearing his garland, like a bride adorned in her jewels (Isaiah 61:10). This brief reading from the morning prayers for the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary, on last October 7^th, well expresses the state of my soul and my deepest sentiments. […] Who would have ever imagined that, after many years, a little altar boy of the Semarang cathedral church would become a missionary bishop on the very day of the parish patron’s name, the Blessed Virgin Queen of the Rosary? For those who believe, nothing happens by chance.  

Twenty-four years ago, on July 6^th, 1997, the night before the day of my priestly ordination in the Chapel of the Seminary in Yogyakarta, my mother told me something personal which I had never heard before. She said that when I was still in her womb, a letter had arrived from the diocesan minor seminary. However, the address in the letter was wrong. It was a letter of admission to the seminary addressed to another boy, son of our neighbour, who would later become a Jesuit. The prophet Jeremiah recounts his vocation in this way: Before I formed you in the womb I knew you; before you came to birth I consecrated you; I appointed you as prophet to the nations (Jeremiah 1:5). Indeed, who can shy away from God’s great plan? […] I thank the Xaverian Missionaries who trained and prepared me to accept this pastoral ministry in the very place where the Xaverian mission ad gentes started seventy years ago.
