MANILA – PHILIPPINES: THE XAVERIAN COMMUNITY OF PHILOSOPHY AND THE LAY XAVERIAN FRIENDS

Last July 23, 2023, the group of Lay Xaverians, together with the Xaverian Philosophy students, went to the Fu Guang Shan Mabuhay Temple to experience a day of practice in Humanistic Buddhism. We were invited to experience Buddhist meditation by  Xena Jontilano, a Buddhist practitioner who attended the last event of Moments of Encounter, an interreligious initiative promoted by the Focolare Movement.

We went there with little knowledge about Buddhism, so we are very thankful to Xena for making an effort to guide us in the Buddhist service. The chanting and meditation lasted for an hour. The service required to be attentive because aside from chanting we did some gestures, like bowing, sitting and kneeling.  After the service, we met Venerable Miao Jing (the head of the temple) who welcomed us warmly. We were offered free lunch (Vegetarian Buffet) and a tour around the Mabuhay Temple.

The overall experience was good, enjoyable, and relaxing. We enjoyed the atmosphere and the place – the Buddhist murals, the sounds of the monks chanting and the smell of incense burning. Hopefully, we will visit again together with the whole group of Lay Xaverians. (A group of Lay Xaverian friends in the Philippines)
