Innanzitutto, ringrazio il Signore che mi ha chiamato alla vita missionaria. Le gioie più grandi di questa vocazione sono senz’altro la destinazione al Bangladesh, allora Pakistan Orientale. Avevo 22 anni.

A Parma (Casa Madre) avevo il compito di Tipografo (1953-1958). Ricordo che partii per il Pakistan Orientale in nave e con me anche i macchinari di una moderna tipografia regalati a Mons. Dante Battagliarin sx, vescovo Khulna. Era la prima tipografia della città di Khulna ed io diventavo il primo tipografo della città! E in questa città ho fatto la Professione Perpetua (1964).

Sono stato richiamato in Italia nel 1975 e sempre come Fratello Coadiutore ho servito come vicerettore nel Centro di Formazione a Desio. Nel 1977 ho partecipato anche al Capitolo Generale.

La Direzione Generale di allora accolse il mio desiderio profondo di diventare presbitero e dopo aver concluso la formazione teologica a Parma con l’ordinazione (1980), sono ritornato in Bangladesh dove ho vissuto un’altra gioia: essere missionario tra i più remoti e abbandonati villaggi: parroco di Baradal. Vivere con i fuori casta, tra i più abbandonati della società è stato una grazia speciale. Sono contento di essere testimone delle scelte fatte da questi nostri fratelli e sorelle per diventare cristiani. Alcuni mussulmani, a motivo della loro scelta di farsi cristiani, furono costretti a lasciare davvero tutto (terra, casa…). Questo esempio di vita ha toccato il cuore di molti. Ho imparato molto.

In missione mi sono ritrovato anche in punto di morte. Ero davvero spacciato, ma grazie alle cure del Dottor Gildo Coperchio sx, che lavorava presso il Fatima Hospital di Jessore (insieme al Dottor Remo Bucari sx), sono guarito. 

Ora mi trovo qui nella comunità della Casa Madre, al IV Piano. La gioia più grande? È quella di poter essere di aiuto ai miei confratelli ammalati, spingendo le loro carrozzelle. (Arduino Rossi sx. 70° Anniversario di Professione Religiosa e Missionaria, 12 settembre 2023) 

First of all, I thank the Lord for calling me to missionary life. The greatest joy of this vocation was undoubtedly being sent to Bangladesh, then East Pakistan. I was 22-year old.

In Parma (Mother House) my task was that of Typographer (1953-1958). I remember leaving for the Oriental Pakistan by boat and taking with me the machines of a modern printer that had been given as a gift to Msgr. Dante Battagliarin s.x., Bishop of Khulna. That was the first press in the city of Khulna, and I would become the first typographer of the city! In that very city I made my Perpetual Profession (1964).

I was called back to Italy in 1975, where, always as Coadjutor Brother, I served as vice-rector of the Formation Centre in Desio. In 1977 I also took part in the General Chapter.

The then General Direction fulfilled my profound desire to become priest and, after having completed my theological training in Parma, I was ordained (1980) and returned to Bangladesh. There, I experienced another joy: being missionary among the remotest and most abandoned villages, as parish priest of Baradal. Living with the outcasts, among the most marginalised in society, has been a special grace. I am glad for having witnessed the choices these brothers and sisters of ours made in order to become Christians. Some of them were Muslims and, because of their choice to become Christians, were literally forced to leave everything (land, house, etc.). Their exemplary life touched the hearts of many. I learned a lot.

In mission, I also found myself on the verge of dying. I was really done for, but thanks to the cares of Dr Gildo Coperchio s.x., that was working at the Fatima Hospital in Jessore (together with Dr Remo Bucari s.x.), I was healed.

Today, I live here, in the Mother House community, on the IV Floor. My greatest joy? To be able to assist my sick confreres by pushing their wheelchairs. (Arduino Rossi s.x. – 70^th Anniversary of Religious and Missionary Profession, September 12^th, 2023)
