“QUO VADIS, HUMANITAS? — DOVE VAI, UMANITÀ?” - COMMISSIONE TEOLOGICA INTERNAZIONALE (CTI)

“QUO VADIS, HUMANITAS? — DOVE VAI, UMANITÀ?” È il titolo del nuovo documento della Commissione Teologica Internazionale (CTI) approvato da papa Leone XIV il 9 febbraio 2026 e pubblicato mercoledì 04 marzo 2026.
Il titolo racchiude le ragioni e lo scopo del documento: oggi, di fronte a un’accelerazione tecnologica senza precedenti, la teologia vuole offrire “una proposta teologica e pastorale” che intende la vita umana come “vocazione integrale” e “co-responsabilità verso gli altri e verso Dio”, alla luce del Vangelo.
La Commissione teologica internazionale pubblica il documento “Quo vadis, humanitas?” nel 60° anniversario della Costituzione Pastorale Gaudium et Spes.
Il testo affronta le sfide poste da intelligenza artificiale, transumanesimo e postumanesimo, mettendo in guardia dai rischi per dignità umana, identità e giustizia sociale (lavoro).
Il transumanesimo sostiene che l’essere umano possa e debba utilizzare le risorse della scienza e della tecnologia per superare i limiti biologici della condizione umana, fino a prospettare un’ “immortalità individuale supportata dalla tecnologia”.
Il postumanesimo spinge oltre questa logica: mette in discussione la specificità della forma umana e rende “del tutto fluido il confine tra l’umano e la macchina”. Secondo la Commissione teologica, entrambe le correnti condividono spesso una valutazione negativa della condizione umana così com’è.
In Cristo, afferma il documento “QUO VADIS, HUMANITAS? — DOVE VAI, UMANITÀ?”, le tensioni che attraversano l’esperienza umana trovano il loro compimento: “non ci può essere ‘trans’ o ‘post’ che la novità di Cristo non abbia già integrato in anticipo”.

“QUO VADIS, HUMANITAS? – HUMANITY, WHERE ARE YOU HEADING TO?” - INTERNATIONAL THEOLOGICAL COMMISSION (ITC)
“QUO VADIS, HUMANITAS? – HUMANITY, WHERE ARE YOU HEADING TO?” is the title of the new document by the International Theological Commission (ITC) approved by Pope Leo XIV on February 9th, 2026 and published on Wednesday, March 4th, 2026.
The title encapsulates the reasons and purpose of this document: today, faced with unprecedented technological acceleration, ITC seeks to offer “a theological and pastoral proposal” that views human life as both an “integral vocation” and “co-responsibility towards others and towards God,” in the light of the Gospel.
ITC has issued the document Quo vadis, humanitas? on the 60th anniversary of the Pastoral Constitution Gaudium et Spes.
The text deals with the challenges posed by artificial intelligence, trans-humanism and post-humanism, and warns about the threat they create to human dignity, identity and social justice (labour).
Trans-humanism affirms that human beings can and should employ the resources of science and technology to overcome the physical and biological limitations of the human condition to the point of envisaging “individual immortality, supported by technology.”
Post-humanism further extends this logic: it questions the specificity of the human form and makes “the boundary between humans and machines completely fluid”.
According to the Theological Commission, both trends often share a negative evaluation of the human condition as it is.
In Christ, states the document QUO VADIS, HUMANITAS?, the tensions that run through the human experience find their fulfilment: “There can be no ‘trans’ or ‘post’ that the newness of Christ has not already integrated by way of anticipation.”
