Ogni anno, dal 1996 ad oggi, nella parrocchia di Gambellara (VI), nella messa vespertina di un sabato in prossimità del 30 settembre vengono ricordati i martiri del Buyengero: p. Ottorino Maule (ivi nativo), p. Aldo Marchiol e la volontaria Catina Gubert. Quest’anno la celebrazione è fissata per sabato 19 settembre. L’avvicinarsi di questo anniversario ci induce a riflettere sul senso di questo “fare memoria”. 

I testimoni del Buyengero erano consapevoli del rischio che correvano. P. Ottorino, nella lettera circolare inviata per il Natale 1994 scriveva: “(…) Di fronte a tante ingiustizie non possiamo tacere e le nostre proteste e denunce a difesa dei deboli ci hanno attirato, inevitabilmente, l’odio dei militari e di quanti li appoggiano. Hanno orchestrato tutta una campagna contro di noi missionari, in particolare contro di me, accusandomi di cose inimmaginabili: di essere alla testa dei “partigiani”, di dar alloggio a coloro che attaccano, di incitare la gente alla rivolta e alla vendetta… e tutto questo è stato detto anche in un comizio pubblico.

Sono stati giorni di tensione e di amarezza, ma anche di consolazione. (…) Vivo questi momenti nello spirito delle beatitudini: un missionario deve pur mettere in conto almeno un po’ di ‘martirio’!”.

La Teologa Rosanna Virgili, in un articolo apparso sul quotidiano Avvenire il 30/07/2016, scriveva: “Martirio è slancio di annuncio evangelico, splendore di una parola che è lieto messaggio per i poveri, gli oppressi e i prigionieri e che nessuno può spegnere neppure con lo sfiguramento, la tortura e il disprezzo”.

Penso che oggi “sospirare la palma gloriosa del martirio” non rappresenti una ricerca romantica della morte, ma la consapevole conseguenza di una fedeltà al Vangelo e alle sorelle e fratelli come ci chiede il battesimo. (Gambellara, Vicenza, Ottavio Framarin)

Every year, from 1996 to the present day, in the parish of Gambellara (VI), during the evening Mass on a Saturday close to 30 September, the martyrs of Buyengero are commemorated: Fr Ottorino Maule (a native of the area), Fr Aldo Marchiol and the volunteer Catina Gubert. This year, the celebration is scheduled for Saturday 19 September. The approach of this anniversary prompts us to reflect on the meaning of this ‘act of remembrance’.

The witnesses of Buyengero were aware of the risk they were running. In a circular letter sent for Christmas 1994, Fr Ottorino wrote: “(…) Faced with so many injustices, we cannot remain silent, and our protests and denunciations in defence of the weak have inevitably drawn upon us the hatred of the military and of those who support them. They have orchestrated a whole campaign against us missionaries, particularly against me, accusing me of unimaginable things: of leading the ‘partisans’, of harbouring those who attack, of inciting people to revolt and seek revenge… and all this was even stated at a public rally.

These have been days of tension and bitterness, but also of consolation. (…) I am living through these moments in the spirit of the Beatitudes: a missionary must surely expect at least a little ‘martyrdom’!”.

The theologian Rosanna Virgili, in an article published in daily newspaper Avvenire on 30 July 2016, wrote: “Martyrdom is the impetus for the proclamation of the Gospel, the splendour of a word that is good news for the poor, the oppressed and the prisoners, and which no one can extinguish, not even through disfigurement, torture and contempt”.

I believe that today, ‘longing for the glorious palm of martyrdom’ does not represent a romantic quest for death, but the conscious consequence of fidelity to the Gospel and to our sisters and brothers, as our baptism requires of us. (Gambellara, Vicenza, Ottavio Framarin)
