Il 16 giugno 2014, ai partecipanti al convegno diocesano di Roma, papa Francesco rievocò l’Esortazione con queste parole: “Anche oggi è il documento pastorale più importante, che non è stato superato, del post-concilio. Dobbiamo andare sempre lì. È un cantiere di ispirazione quell’Esortazione Apostolica. E l’ha fatta il grande Paolo VI, di suo pugno”. E nell’Udienza generale del 22 marzo 2023 chiede ai fedeli di mettersi in ascolto di questa “magna carta” dell’evangelizzazione nel mondo contemporaneo: “Cari fratelli e sorelle, vi rinnovo l’invito a leggere e rileggere l’Evangelii Nuntiandi: io vi dico la verità, io la leggo spesso, perché quello è il capolavoro di san Paolo VI, è l’eredità che ha lasciato a noi per evangelizzare”.

E.N. n. 76 le tre domande

Questi “segni dei tempi” dovrebbero trovarci all'erta. Tacitamente o con alte grida, ma sempre con forza, ci domandano: Credete veramente a quello che annunziate? Vivete quello che credete? Predicate veramente quello che vivete? La testimonianza della vita è divenuta più che mai una condizione essenziale per l'efficacia profonda della predicazione. Per questo motivo, eccoci responsabili, fino ad un certo punto, della riuscita del Vangelo che proclamiamo.

On June 16^th, 2014, in an address to the participants in the conference of the Diocese of Rome, the late pope Francis recalled the Exhortation in these terms: “This remains the most important and unsurpassed pastoral document of the after-Council. We must keep going back to it, for this Apostolic Exhortation is a continuous source of inspiration. And it was penned by the great Paul VI, in his own handwriting.” On another occasion, during the general audience on Mach 22^nd, 2024, he invited the faithful to listen to this “magna charta” of the evangelisation in contemporary world: “Dear brothers and sisters, I renew my invitation to you to read and re-read Evangelii nuntiandi. I will tell you the truth, I read it often, because it is Saint Paul VI’s masterpiece, it is the legacy he left to us, to evangelize.”

EN no. 76: the three questions

These "signs of the times" should find us vigilant. Either tacitly or aloud- but always forcefully- we are being asked: Do you really believe what you are proclaiming? Do you live what you believe? Do you really preach what you live? The witness of life has become more than ever an essential condition for real effectiveness in preaching. Precisely because of this we are, to a certain extent, responsible for the progress of the Gospel that we proclaim.
