Il 12 febbraio 2008, alle ore 10,20, a Parma in Casa Madre, dopo lunga malattia è morto Fr. Guglielmo Cerati. Aveva quasi 72 anni, essendo nato a Rigoso (Parma) il 20 maggio 1936.
Fr. Guglielmo, allievo del Seminario Minore di Parma dal 1949 al 1953, entrò tra i Saveriani il 17.2.1954. Fu accolto a Parma, in Casa Madre che allora era anche sede del Probandato e del Noviziato per i Fratelli Coadiutori. Così fu presentato dal Rettore del Seminario, il Canonico Pietro Triani: “Ottimo elemento per quanto riguarda condotta, carattere e pietà. Molto docile e obbediente, di sentimenti delicati e fini; accusa una educazione familiare molto accurata” (28.9.53).
Dopo sei mesi di Probandato, l’11 settembre 54, entrò in Noviziato e il 19.3.1956 fece la Prima Professione: “Chiedo di essere ammesso alla Professione dei Santi Voti, come Fratello Coadiutore. Sperando nell’aiuto di Dio e nella protezione di Maria SS. di mantenermi fedele fino alla morte” (2.2.56). Nove anni dopo, il 12.9.1965, emise la Professione Perpetua.
Dal 1956 al 1967 Fr. Guglielmo lavorò a Piacenza (56-57), Parma (57-58), Udine (58-60), Desio (60-65), Roma Viale Vaticano 90 (65-67), sempre nei servizi della casa e nell’accoglienza.
Nel febbraio del 1960 aveva chiesto ufficialmente al Superiore Generale «di essere inviato in missione rimettendomi interamente alla di lei illuminata volontà. Con la più viva speranza che questo mio desiderio sia da lei accolto…». E il Superiore gli aveva risposto: «Siamo ora tanto scarsi di fratelli che per il momento non c’è neppure da pensarci… prega perché ne vengano altri e ci sarà modo anche per te di prendere il volo» (29.2.60).
Per la realizzazione del suo desiderio dovette attendere fino al 1967 quando fu destinato al Brasile. La Regione oltre che nella pastorale era allora impegnata in un intenso programma volto a realizzare e a costituire le strutture e le comunità necessarie per la formazione degli aspiranti saveriani. Fr. Guglielmo fu Prefetto nel nuovo Seminario di Jaguapità (67-69), e poi Economo in quello di Londrina (69-74). Successivamente prestò il suo servizio di addetto alla casa a Nova Laranjeiras, São Paulo-Vila Mariana, a Verê e ancora a Jaguapità.
Fr. Guglielmo ricordava volentieri gli anni ‘brasiliani’ ma anche con qualche recriminazione: «in questa Provincia o sei già allenato o hai doti naturali che ti aiutano a superare gli inizi o se no si viene irrimediabilmente emarginati … [non ho trovato] una comunità che mi aiutasse ad inserirmi in una attività o pastorale o formativa, specialmente con un carattere fondamentalmente timido come il mio…» (22.9.80).
Nel 1981 rientrò in Italia a Parma, in Casa Madre, ancora destinato ai servizi della comunità. «La cosa che ricordo come una sua caratteristica è che per qualunque incarico gli venisse affidato, umile o ‘nobile’, lui non aveva problemi di ‘rigetto’, eseguiva il suo lavoro nel miglior modo possibile con senso del dovere e di responsabilità. Cosciente che la sua presenza non era quella di un manager, ma quella di servizio ai confratelli e alle persone che venivano in casa» (Fr. D. Montanaro, 3.3.08).
Negli ultimi anni della sua vita, infine, la lunga e implacabile devastazione dell’Halzheimer: «una montagna di sofferenza innocente – come ha ricordato P. M. Menin nell’omelia della Messa esequiale– ogni giorno sempre più dura da scalare. E chi la scalava giorno dopo giorno, mese dopo mese, anno dopo anno, era soprattutto Fr. Guglielmo, in una solitudine forzata, senza che potessimo fargli da cirenei. Il suo corpo malato sembrava nascondere in un abisso irraggiungibile la coscienza di sé… anni di assenza involontaria, di silenzio forzato, di comunicazione interrotta… Ma ora, dopo i lunghi anni di ‘notte oscura’, Fr. Guglielmo -[noi lo crediamo]- è la sentinella del Dio della vita, che alza la voce come non l’ha mai alzata, che grida di gioia come non ha mai gridato, che canta come non ha mai cantato “perché il Signore ha consolato il suo popolo, ha riscattato Gerusalemme” (Is 52,9)…».

Br. Guglielmo Cerati died in the Mother House, Parma, on Feb. 12 2008, after a long illness. Born in Rigoso (Parma), on May 20 1936, he was almost 72 years old.
Br. Guglielmo, who studied at the Minor Seminary of Parma from 1949 until 1953, joined the Xaverians on Feb. 17 1954. He was received into the Mother House which at that time was also the community of the Probandato and Novitiate for the Brothers. Canon Pietro Triani, the Rector of the Seminary, thus described him in a letter of presentation: “He excels in conduct, character and piety. He is very docile and obedient with noble sentiments; his family have brought him up very well.” (Sept. 28, 1953)
On Sept. 11 1954, after six months of Probandato, he began Novitiate and made his First Profession on March 19 1956: “I ask to be admitted to Profession of the Holy Vows as a Brother. Trusting in God’s help, and in the protection of the Blessed Virgin Mary, I hope to remain faithful until death” (Feb. 2, 1956). Nine years later, on Sept. 12 1965, he made his Final Profession.
From 1956 until 1967, Br. Guglielmo worked in Piacenza (1956-57), Parma (1957-58), Udine (1958-60), Desio (1960-65), Rome, viale Vaticano 90 (1965-67), always at the service of these houses and hospitality.
In February 1960, he officially asked the Superior General «to be sent to the missions, though I place myself entirely at your disposal. My greatest hope is that my desire finds favor with you…» The Superior replied: «We are so short of brothers at the moment that what you ask is unthinkable… pray that others may join us so that you too may have the opportunity to leave» (Feb. 29, 1960).
He had to wait until 1967 for his dream to come true when he was assigned to Brazil. As well as pastoral work, the Region was then committed to an intense program of building the structures and communities necessary for the formation of aspirants to the Xaverian life. Br. Guglielmo worked as Prefect of the new Seminary of Jaguapità (1967-69) and Treasurer in the Seminary of Londrina (1969-74). Thereafter he worked in Nova Laranjeiras, São Paulo-Vila Mariana, Verê and again at Jaguapità.
Br. Guglielmo remembered willingly the “Brazilian” years, though not without some complaints: «things are fine in this Province if you are already prepared or if you possess natural talents that help you to overcome the initial difficulties; otherwise you are irremediably excluded… [I didn’t find] a community to help me find my place in pastoral or formation activity, especially with a basically timid character like mine…» (Sept. 22, 1980).
In 1981 he returned to the Mother House where he was once again assigned to the service of the community. Br. D. Montanaro thus remembers him: “I was struck most by the fact that, whatever task he was given, whether humble or ‘noble,’ he never showed any signs of ‘rejection,’ but carried out his work in the best possible way with a sense of duty and responsibility. He did so with the awareness that his was not a managerial presence, but one of service to the confreres and people who passed through the house.” (March 3, 2008)
Finally, in the last years of his life, he suffered the long and implacable devastation of Alzheimer’s disease. During the funeral Mass, Fr. Mario Menin said: “His was a mountain of innocent suffering that became more difficult to climb with each passing day. He did so day after day, month after month, year after year in an imposed loneliness and we were unable to do anything for him. His sick body seemed to hide his self-awareness in an unreachable abyss… years of involuntary absence, forced silence, interrupted communication… But now, after long years of the ‘dark night,’ Br. Guglielmo – we believe – is the sentinel of the God of life, who makes his voice heard as never before, who shouts with joy as never before, who sings as never before ‘because God is consoling his people, redeeming Jerusalem’.” (Is. 52:9).
