Il lunedì 3 settembre alle 10.25 é deceduto nella casa dei suoi genitori a Moroleón, Gto, dove era nato il 4 di marzo del 1966, il nostro confratello il P. José de Jesús Izquierdo Bedolla. Il P. Chuy aveva partecipato, nel mese di luglio, al pre-seminario che si organizza in Salamanca per i giovani che hanno deciso di entrare tra i saveriani. Ai primi di agosto, sentendosi particolarmente stanco, entrò in una clinica naturista per curarsi e per riposare un po’. Dopo pochi giorni si sentiva gia meglio, tranquillo, ma continuava a perdere peso. Sia la famiglia che i Superiori insistettero perché si facesse vedere da un medico, però lui rispondeva sempre e con sicurezza che si sentiva bene e che si stava riprendendo. Il venerdì 31 lasciò la clinica e andò a casa sua per un periodo di convalescenza. Purtroppo dopo tre giorni moriva: probabilmente per un cancro al fegato, secondo il medico che l’ha visto poco prima che morisse.
Il P. Chuy entró tra i Saveriani nel 1983, finite le scuole superiori. Trascorse due anni a Salamanca per il postulato e il noviziato(83-85), due anni a Guadalajara per la filosofía (85-87), un anno come prefetto a San Juan del Río (87-88). Ritornò ancora a Guadalajara per la teología (87-90); fu quindi nella missione di Acoyotla per l’anno di pastorale (90-91); infine di nuovo a Guadalajara per l’ultimo anno di teología (91-92). Fu ordinato presbitero a San Juan del Río il 19 dicembre ’92.
Forse il dato distintivo del suo cammino formativo è quello segnalato alla fine dell’anno di pastorale: “Il suo carattere buono e generoso lo ha aiutato a farsi voler bene da tutta la gente, che lo cercava in una maniera quasi esagerata ... la tenerezza del suo carattere si é manifestata sopratutto con i bambini, svolgendo a volte un ruolo più di ‘madre’ che di ‘padre’, facendosi uno come loro e appoggiandoli in tutto. La sua generosità si é manifestata soprattutto nell’attenzione agli ammalati, che visitava con frequenza nelle loro case” (6.8.92).
Dopo l’ordinazione presbiterale frequentò, a Cittá del México (93-95), dei corsi in preparazione al suo servizio nella formazione. Lavorò dapprima ad Arandas (95-98) come direttore spirituale dei nostri seminaristi di ‘preparatoria’ e poi nella comunità di Torreón (98-01) come animatore missionario e vocazionale.
Il P. Jesús era una persona ricca, dotata: forte la sua sensibilità religiosa, particolarmente spiccate le sue doti artistiche e la sua capacità di rapporti umani con ogni tipo di persone, piccoli e grandi, poveri e ricchi, con una predilezione per indios, ammalati, carcerati, emarginati: “Questo é uno dei miei grandi desideri, servire sinceramente Dio e mio fratello, soprattutto il più bisognoso” (Lettera del 14.2 91). Lo stesso giorno scriveva al Superiore Generale “Sono già quasi 8 anni che sono entrato nella famiglia saveriana e adesso, come all’inizio, il desiderio di donare la mia vita al servizio dell’estensione del Regno di Dio tra i non cristiani, specialmente i più poveri, continua vivo”.
I desideri, le aspirazioni e gli impegni del P. Chuy sono splendidamente indicati nella domanda di ammissione al presbiterato (22.9.’92): “Sono pienamente convinto di essere molto limitato e che devo crescere ancora molto nella fede in Dio e nella fiducia in Lui. So che io non posso risolvere tutti i problemi che mi circondano, però voglio essere un albero in mezzo al deserto, una sorgente dalla quale esce acqua fresca e limpida che calmi la sete di qualche persona. Non desidero grandi cose. Non pretendo molto. So che la mia vita é corta e per questo oso metterla al servizio del Regno di Dio che mi ha chiamato per creare relazioni personali più fraterne”.
Che il Signore conceda al P. José de Jesús il premio promesso al ‘servo buono e fedele’.

On Monday Sept. 3 2001, at 10:25, Fr. Josè de Jesùs Izquierdo Bedolla died at his parents' home in Moroleon, Gto, the town where he was born on March 4 1966. He was 35 years old.
Fr. Chuy had taken part in the pre-seminary experience that is held in July for those young men who have decided to join the Xaverians. In the first few days of August, he felt particularly tired and went to a natural medicine clinic for treatment and rest. After a few days he felt better, more serene, but he was still losing weight. Both the family and the Superiors insisted that he should see a doctor, but he firmly replied that he felt well and that he was getting better. On Friday Aug. 31, he left the clinic and went home for a period of convalescence. Unfortunately, three days later he was dead. The doctor who examined him shortly before his death said that this was probably caused by a tumor in the liver.
Fr. Chuy joined the Xaverians in 1983 after finishing high school. He spent two years in Postulancy and Novitiate in Salamanca (1983-85), two years in Guadalajara for philosophy (1985-87), a year as prefect in San Juan del Rio (1987-88). He then returned to Guadalajara for Theology (1987-90); he was sent to the mission of Acoyotla pastoral year (90-91); then back again to Guadalajara for the final year of Theology (1991-92). He was ordained priest in San Juan del Rio on Dec. 19 1992.
Perhaps the distinguishing mark of his formation journey was the one highlighted in an assessment at the end of his pastoral year: "His good and generous character has helped him to win the love of all the people, who often looked for him in an almost excessive way .. his gentle character was visible above all with children, with whom he sometimes played a more maternal than paternal role, identifying with them and supporting them in everything. His generosity was visible most of all in his attention to the sick whom he frequently visited in their houses" (Aug. 6 1992).
After his ordination to the priesthood, he frequented preparatory courses for formators in Mexico City, (1993-95). He then served in formation, first of all, in Arandas (1995-98) as spiritual director to our seminarians and then in the community of Torreòn (1998-2001) as missionary and vocation animator.
Fr. Jesùs was a rich and gifted person: he had a strong religious sensitivity, particularly keen his artistic abilities and his capacity for human relationships with every kind of person, small and great, poor and rich, with a preference for indigenous people, the sick, those in prison and marginalized people: "This is one of my greatest desires, to sincerely serve God and my brothers, especially those in greatest need" (Letter, Feb. 14 1991). The same day he wrote to the Superior General "I have already been a Xaverian for 8 years now and, like the first day, the desire is still alive in me to dedicate my life to spreading the Kingdom of God among the non-Christians, especially those who are poorest of all.”
The desires, the aspirations and the commitments of Fr. Jesùs splendidly shine through clearly in his application for admission to the priesthood (Sept. 22 1992): "I am fully convinced of my limitations and that I must still grow a lot in faith and trust in God. I know that I cannot resolve all the problems I see around me, but I want to be a tree in the midst of the desert, a spring from which clear and fresh water flows to calm someone's thirst. I do not desire great things. I do not demand much. I know that my life is short and that for this reason I dare to put it at the service of the Kingdom of God who has called me to build more fraternal personal relationships".
May the Lord give Fr. José de Jesús the promised award to the good and faithful servant.
