I1 12.8.2008, alle ore 12.30, nella casa della famiglia a Scano Montiferro (Nuoro – Italia), è morto il P. Giovanni Pes. Da quando, nel settembre dello scorso anno, era rientrato dalla Repubblica Democratica del Congo per una presunta forma di tubercolosi polmonare, faceva la spola tra l’ospedale e la famiglia, assistito con affetto dai suoi cari.
Aveva 71 anni compiuti, essendo nato a Scano Montiferro il 13.02.1937.
Due furono le entrate di P. Giovanni tra i Saveriani: la prima a Tortolì nel 1948; la seconda a S. Pietro in Vincoli nel 1958. Dal 48 al 58 fu allievo del Seminario diocesano di Bosa e poi del Pontificio Seminario Regionale Sardo di Cuglieri: fino alla Propedeutica compresa.
Nel 1958 entrò in Noviziato; l’anno dopo, il 22.9.59, emise la Prima Professione. Passò quindi a Parma per la teologia. Fu ordinato presbitero il 28.10.62. Così fu presentato per i ministeri ordinati: «Temperamento felice, buone doti naturali; gioviale e intraprendente si sacrifica volentieri per la comunità. Dimostra di amare molto la causa missionaria che intende servire militando nella congregazione dove si trova a suo agio. Proponibile per la propaganda e per il reclutamento» (26.5.62).
Il suo primo impegno dopo l’ordinazione fu l’animazione missionaria, in Spagna. Aveva infatti chiesto al P. Generale che non lo lasciasse in Italia e tanto meno lo inviasse in Sardegna dove lo si richiedeva con insistenza: aveva lasciato il seminario proprio per andare in missione! Lavorò in Spagna fino al 1968. Furono 5 anni di incontri con i giovani, nei collegi e nelle università, nei gruppi giovanili e nei seminari. Anni, anche, segnati da problemi di salute, personali e familiari, «accettati umilmente dalle mani pietose di Dio» (24.9.67).
Dal 69 al 73 visse la prima esperienza africana, in Congo, direttore del Collegio ‘Nostra Signora del Tanganika’ di Baraka (69-71) e del Collegio ’S. Francesco Saverio’ di Kamituga: due strutture che dovette riavviare e rilanciare.
Dal 73 all’82 fu ancora in Spagna, animatore vocazionale e poi Superiore Regionale. Si iscrisse anche alla Pontificia Università di Comillas a Madrid e vi conseguì la Licenza in Filosofia (4.7.78).
Dall’82 al 95 lavorò nuovamente in Congo: parroco a Bukavu-Cahi (82-88), viceparroco a Wallungu, Superiore Regionale (90-93), viceparroco a Kinshasa-Mpasa II. Così ricordò in “Missionari Saveriani, marzo 1997” quel prolungato periodo africano: «[A Cahi] potei far costruire le abitazioni per le famiglie sfrattate ingiustamente e edificare il dispensario-maternità. Ma specialmente edificare il Regno di Dio in tanti cuori. Nelle missioni di Walungu e di Kanyola dove, anche con aiuti dall’Italia, si poterono realizzare in tempo record le strutture parrocchiali, potei sperimentare le gioie e i dolori dei safari in foresta. A Kinshasa infine, missione voluta dal sottoscritto, rimasi appena un anno perché problemi di salute mi costrinsero a rientrare in patria».
Restò in Italia per dieci anni: fu Rettore a Salerno (96-00), e poi animatore e economo a Piacenza e a Taranto. Nel 2005 ottenne di ritornare in Congo, Cappellano nella parrocchia Mater Dei di Bukavu e poi Economo e Procuratore a Kinshasa. Ma la salute non lo resse e dopo due anni rientrò definitivamente in patria, a vivere l’ultima, breve tappa della sua esistenza.
Se n’è andato un confratello gioviale, sensibile e generoso; un tifoso dell’Africa: «Non potete immaginare cosa sia la periferia di una città africana – “Missionari Saveriani, marzo 97”– ma non potete immaginarvi nemmeno quanta fede, quanta speranza in un domani migliore, quanto impegno nelle comunità di base per migliorare in tutti i sensi, quanta solidarietà fraterna, e quanta dignità nella sofferenza e nel sacrificio. Il missionario insegna loro qualcosa, ma sono moltissime le cose che loro insegnano al missionario e gli esempi che gli danno in tutti i campi della vita e della fede».
Il Signore lo accolga nella comunione dei santi in Paradiso.

Fr. Giovanni Pes died at his family home, in Scano Montiferro (Nuoro – Italy), on Aug. 12 2008. In September 2007 he had returned to Italy from the Democratic Republic of Congo with a suspected form of pulmonary tuberculosis, and spent the remaining time of his life between hospital and his family, who assisted him with their loving care.
Born in Scano Montiferro on Feb. 13 1937, he was 71 years old.
Fr. Giovanni joined the Xaverians twice: the first time at Tortolì in 1948 and the second time at S. Pietro in Vincoli in 1958. From 1948 until 1958 he studied at the diocesan Seminary of Bosa and then at the Pontifical Regional Seminary of Sardinia at Cuglieri.
In 1958 he entered Novitiate and made his First profession the following year, on Sept. 22 1959.
He then moved to Parma to study Theology and was ordained priest on Oct. 28 1962. His formators thus presented him for ordination: «He possesses a good temperament and natural qualities; he is cheerful and resourceful, he willingly sacrifices himself for the community. He shows great love for the missionary cause and intends to serve it in this religious family, in which he feels at home. Suitable for propaganda and recruitment work » (May 26 1962).
His first assignment after ordination was to Missionary Animation in Spain. He had asked the Superior General not to assign him to Italy, and even less to Sardinia, which was repeatedly asking for him to be sent there: he had left the seminary precisely because he wanted to go to the missions! He worked in Spain until 1968.During those five years he met young people in the schools and universities, youth groups and seminaries. These were also years of health problems, both for himself and members of his family, which were «humbly accepted from the merciful hands of God» (Sept. 24 1967).
From 1969 until 1973 he had his first experience of Africa, in Congo, as director of the School ‘Our Lady of Tanganika’ in Baraka (1969-71) and St Francis Xavier in Kamituga, both of which he had to re-open and re-launch.
From 1973 until 1982 he was back in Spain as Vocation Animator and then Regional Superior. He enrolled in the Pontifical University of Comillas in Madrid and obtained the Masters in Philosophy (April 4 1978).
From 1982 until 1995 he was back in the Congo, where he served as parish priest at Bukavu-Cahi (1982-88), assistant priest at Wallungu, Regional Superior (1990-93), assistant priest at Kinshasa-Mpasa II. He spoke about this lengthy period in Africa in an article published by “Missionari Saveriani” in March 1997: «[At Cahi] I had houses built for the families that had been unjustly evicted and a dispensary-maternity clinic. But above all we worked to build the Kingdom of God in many hearts. In the missions of Walungu and Kanyola, thanks also to the help we received from Italy, we were able to build the parochial structures in record time and I savored the joys and the sufferings of life on safari in the forest. At Kinshasa, where the mission was my idea, I remained just one year because health problems forced me to return to Italy ».
He remained in Italy for ten years and served as Rector at Salerno (1996-2000), animator and treasurer at Piacenza and Taranto. In 2005 he was allowed to return to the Congo, where he worked as Chaplain in the Mater Dei parish of Bukavu and, subsequently, as Treasurer and Procurator at Kinshasa. However, his health was not up to the task and after two years he returned definitively to Italy to spend the last brief phase of his life at home.
His death has deprived us of a cheerful, sensitive and generous confrere and a fan of Africa. In March 1997, in “Missionari Saveriani”, he said: «You cannot imagine what the outskirts of an African town are like– but you cannot imagine either how much faith, how much hope in a better future, and how much commitment there is in the basic communities to improve in every way, how much human solidarity, and how much dignity in suffering and sacrifice. The missionary teaches them something, but many are the things that they teach to the missionary and many are the examples they give in all the aspects of life and faith ».

Le p. Jean Pes est décédé le 12.08.2008 en Italie, dans sa famille d’origine. Il avait quitté le Congo en septembre 2007 présentant les symptômes d’une tuberculose pulmonaire.
Le P. Giovanni Pes était né le 13 février 1937, à Scano Montiferro, en Italie. Il fut ordonné prêtre le 28.10.1962.
Ses formateurs le présentèrent ainsi au sacerdoce : Tempérament serein, bonnes qualités humaines ; jovial et entreprenant. Il se sacrifie volontiers pour la communauté. Il manifeste beaucoup d’amour pour la cause missionnaire qu’il veut servir dans cette congrégation où il trouve son épanouissement. Il est apte à l’animation missionnaire (26.05.1962).
Effectivement, après l’ordination sacerdotale il fut nommé animateur vocationnel en Espagne (1963-1968). Commencèrent alors cinq années de rencontres avec les jeunes, dans les collèges et les universités, dans les paroisses et les séminaires. Durant cette période, il fut marqué par la maladie, personnellement et dans sa famille d’origine. Il sentit la proximité de Dieu qui accueillait ces souffrances dans sa miséricorde (24.09.1967). Il partit au Congo en 1969. Il fut directeur de collège à Baraka et à Kamituga. En 1973 il est rappelé en Espagne comme animateur vocationnel, puis élu Supérieur Régional des Missionnaires Xavériens en Espagne. Il s’inscrit à l’Université Pontificale de Madrid où il obtient, en 1976, une licence en philosophie. En 1982, il arriva de nouveau au Congo. Il fut curé de Cahi-Bukavu (1982-1988) et vicaire à Walungu (1988-1990). Le Cinquième Chapitre Régional du Zaïre élit le père Jean Pes Supérieur Régional de la Circonscription (1990-1993). Au terme de son mandat, il partit à Kinshasa Mpasa II, où il travailla en paroisse comme vicaire. Il n’y resta qu’une année car des problèmes de santé le ramenèrent en Italie pour se soigner. En 1995 il resta affecté en Italie où il exerça son ministère dans plusieurs maisons des Xavériens pendant dix ans (Salerno, Piacenza, Taranto). En 2005, il repartit pour la troisième fois au Congo où il fut vicaire à la paroisse Mater Dei, puis procureur et économe à la maison du noviciat xavérien à Kinshasa.
Le p. Jean Pes a rejoint la maison du Père le 12 août, en la fête du Bienheureux Isidore Bakandja, martyr au Congo. Il le prend en quelque sorte par la main pour l’accompagner auprès du Père, en reconnaissance du don qu’il fit de lui-même pour l’annonce de l’Evangile en République Démocratique du Congo. Depuis le ciel, désormais, il intercède pour nous.
Le père Joseph Ibba écrit : Le père Jean Pes était un grand communicateur. Il lui était facile de nouer des amitiés et de les cultiver avec son caractère enthousiaste et joyeux. Ceux qui l’ont connu peuventen en témoigner. Cette facilité à entrer en relation a été un point fort de son activité missionnaire. Il a ainsi appris plusieurs langues : le français pour le Congo, l’espagnol pour son service d’animation en Espagne, mais aussi le kiswahili, le mashi et le lingala pour l’activité pastorale au Congo.
J’ai apprécié aussi sa capacité d’accepter les services que la Congrégation lui demandait en Afrique ou en Europe. D’habitude, il était affecté dans des milieux difficiles où sa créativité et sa préparation lui permettaient de bien réussir. C’est ainsi qu’il fut le directeur de l’Institut Tangila, à Kamituga, établissement de 1000 élèves. Il fut ensuite vicaire à Baraka parmi les pêcheurs du Lac Tanganyika durant une période d’insécurité. Il s’y était surtout investi pour la défense des droits humains menacés par des groupes armés suscitant, en retour, le ressentiment de ces groupes envers lui. Il a accepté la charge de curé à Cahi, à la périphérie de la ville de Bukavu. Il organisa la pastorale qui favorisait à cette époque l’émergence des Communautés Ecclésiales Vivantes, des Mouvements de Jeunesse et l’organisation des Ecoles. Ensuite, quand on chercha à ouvrir une paroisse à l’intérieur du pays, à Kaniola, avec une langue différente, le mashi, les Supérieurs y envoyèrent le père Pes. De même quand les Xavériens ouvrirent une maison à Kinshasa, dans la zone lingalophone, c’est le père Pes qu’on désigna.
Les gens, en particulier les jeunes pour lesquels le père Pes avait une grande prédilection, disaient souvent avec fierté avoir été baptisés ou confirmés par le père Pes !
Cloué au lit par la maladie et la souffrance, il me disait : « Je demande au Seigneur de croire que même la situation que je vis est mission, bien que l’Afrique me manque terriblement ».
Giovanni, tu nous manqueras. Tu manqueras à l’Afrique, à l’Eglise, à la Congrégation, à ta famille et à tes amis. Mais nous croyons que tu seras présent par ton intercession, auprès de Dieu pour nous tous. Merci pour ce que tu as été pour nous et pour ta cordiale amitié. Adieu!
