P. Pierino Regazzoli

A Desio, tra le 11,00 e le 12,30 del 13.5.2009, è morto per arresto cardiaco il P. Pierino Regazzoli. Il padre era passato in refettorio intorno alle 11,00 e alle 12.30 è stato trovato senza vita, nella sua stanza, seduto e con il capo reclinato sulla scrivania.
Aveva 78 anni compiuti, essendo nato a Rivolta d'Adda (CR) il 26.3.1931.
P. Pierino vide per la prima volta un missionario, precisamente il P. Silvestro Volta, nel Seminario di Cremona dove era entrato nell'autunno del 1945 per diventare sacerdote diocesano: "Mi sono subito entusiasmato della missione e ho espresso il desiderio di farmi missionario al Direttore Spirituale" (Esame della vocazione 1950). Quattro anni più tardi entrò tra i Saveriani a Zelarino per frequentare la 5° ginnasio. "Pietà soda; aperto col Superiore – scrisse di lui P. E. Morazzoni – si è amalgamato subito con i compagni. Secondo me è un buon acquisto".
Fece l'anno di Noviziato a S. Pietro in Vincoli; emise la Prima Professione il 12.10.1951. Seguirono i tre anni di liceo a Desio; il prefettato a Cremona; i quattro anni di teologia a Piacenza e a Parma dove fu ordinato presbitero il 9.11.1959. Accompagnato sempre da giudizi positivi: "Carattere forte. Generoso. Costante. Esegue bene ciò che gli viene affidato. Pietà buona" (Presentazione Professione Perpetua). "Mi sembra che lavori seriamente in tutti i campi, sia spirituale che disciplinare. Penso farà un'ottima riuscita in missione" (Presentazione Ordini Maggiori).
Alla fine della teologia P. Pierino fu impegnato in Italia. Fu economo, dal 1960 al 1964, a Massa Lucana e a Salerno. Dal '65 al '68 fu Superiore della casa di Cagliari. Un compito, questo, davvero delicato. P. Spagnolo, allora Superiore della Delegazione delle Scuole Apostoliche, gli scriveva al riguardo: "Si spera che lei sappia reggere con sapienza e prudenza e che porti a termine i lavori che devono essere attuati per rendere la casa capace di almeno una classe di apostolini" (3.8.65).
La destinazione alla missione giunse nel 1968. Così il P. Pierino, sempre parco nelle parole, ringraziò il P. Generale: "Esprimo il mio più vivo ringraziamento. Dopo dieci anni di Sacerdozio in Italia nelle case apostoliche, era per me una necessità la partenza per le Missioni" (22.4.68).
Nell'ottobre dello stesso anno era già a Bujumbura per lo studio della lingua e l'anno successivo, iniziava il suo servizio missionario. Fu viceparroco a Mabanda e poi a Rumonge, parroco a Matara (71-77 e 79-83) e a Butara (77-79). Dall'83 all'87 e dall'89 al '93 fu Rettore della Casa Regionale, Procuratore di missione ed Economo Regionale.
P. Pierino espresse più volte la sua soddisfazione per i 25 anni di Burundi: "Sono contento e ho tanta voglia di lavorare" (3.12.75). 'Missionari Saveriani', febbraio '78 così lo presentava: "Pierino ha spalle buone per tutti i pesi, braccia forti per tutti i lavori, gambe adatte per tutti i sentieri e un cuore pieno di amore per Dio e per i Fratelli". Lui stesso, presentando ai suoi amici/benefattori la nuova pastorale delle comunità cristiane viventi delle colline, scriveva: "Abbiamo diviso la missione in trenta colline perché in una collina tutti si conoscono e i problemi sono affrontati e approfonditi più concretamente ... La nostra presenza missionaria dovrebbe essere come la forza di Dio diffusa su ogni collina per liberare dal peccato, dall'ingiustizia e dalla miseria" (11.9.76).
E con i burundesi visse la drammatica conquista della pace e della democrazia: la sanguinosa repressione della rivolta hutu del 1972, e poi le espulsioni dei missionari e le limitazioni sempre più ostili imposte alla chiesa. Egli stesso fu espulso nel 1987. Fortunatamente dopo due anni furono ripristinate le libertà religiose e P. Pierino ritornò volentieri in Burundi.
Purtroppo nel 1993 per problemi di salute rientrò definitivamente in Italia. Fece parte delle comunità di Cremona poi di Piacenza e dal 2001 di Desio. Sempre disponibile e felice di servire nella pastorale della chiesa locale, di essere un buon amico, un consigliere e un confessore.

Fr. Pierino Regazzoli died of a heart attack, in Desio (Milan, Italy), on May 13 2009. He had been seen in the dining room at 11 o’clock and was found dead at 12:30, sitting in his room with his head bowed over his desk.
Born in Rivolta d’Adda (Cremona) on March 26 1931, he was 78 years old.
Fr. Pierino met his first missionary in the person of Fr. Silvestro Volta, at the Seminary of Cremona he had joined in the autumn of 1945 to become a diocesan priest: “I immediately became enthusiastic about the missions and I expressed my desire to become a missionary to the Spiritual Director" (Vocation examination 1950). Four years later, he joined the Xaverians in Zelarino for the fifth year of high school. Fr. Eugenio Morazzoni wrote: “He has a solid piety and is open with the Superior; he fitted in quickly with his companions. In my opinion, he is a promising candidate.”
He did the year of novitiate at S. Pietro in Vincoli and made his First Profession on Oct. 12 1951. This was followed by three years of liceo at Desio, a period as prefect in Cremona and four years of theology at Piacenza and Parma, where he was ordained priest on Nov. 9 1959. He was always accompanied by good reports: “He possesses a strong character, he is generous and persevering. He performs well in everything he is asked to do. His devotion is good” (Presentation to Final Profession). “My impression is that he is a serious worker in every field, spiritual and disciplinary. I think he will be very successful in the missions” (Presentation to Major Orders).
At the end of theology, Fr. Pierino was assigned to Italy. He worked as treasurer at Massa Lucana and Salerno (1960-64). He was then Superior of the house in Cagliari (1965-68), a truly delicate task. Fr. Spagnolo, who was then the Superior of the Delegation of the Minor Seminaries, wrote to him: “We hope that you will be able to manage wisely and prudently the work that must be carried out to make the house capable of holding at least one class of seminarians” (Aug. 3, 1965).
He was assigned to the missions in 1968. Always sparing with words, Fr. Pierino thus thanked the Superior General: “I express my heartfelt gratitude. After ten years of priesthood in the seminaries of Italy, it was necessary that I leave for the Missions” (Apr. 22, 1968).
In October of the same year he was already in Bujumbura for language study and the following year he began his missionary service. He served as assistant priest at Mabanda and then at Tumonge, parish priest at Matara (1971-77 and 1979-83) and at Butara (1977-79). In the years 1983-87, and 1989-93, he served as Rector of the Regional House, Mission Procurator and Regional Treasurer.
Fr. Pierino expressed on many occasions his satisfaction for his 25 years in Burundi: “I am happy and have a great desire to work” (Dec. 3 1975). In February 1978, ‘Missionari Saveriani’ thus described him: “Pierino has solid shoulders for all kinds of burdens, strong arms for all kinds of work, legs fit for all roads and a heart full of love for God and his brothers and sisters.” Writing to his friends/benefactors about the new pastoral ministry with the Christian communities living in the hills, he said: “We had divided the mission into thirty hills because in each hill everyone knows everyone else, and problems are dealt with in a more concrete manner... Our missionary presence should be like God’s power coming into the hills to free people from sin, injustice and poverty” (Sept. 11 1976).
He experienced the dramatic conquest of peace and democracy with the people of Burundi: the bloody repression of the Hutu uprising in 1972, which was followed by the expulsion of the missionaries and increasingly hostile limits placed on the Church. Fr. Pierino himself was expelled from the country in 1987. Fortunately, religious liberties were restored two years later, and he willingly returned to Burundi.
Unfortunately, health problems forced him to return definitively to Italy in 1993. He was a member of the communities of Cremona and Piacenza before moving to Desio in 2001. He was always available and happy to help in the local pastoral ministry, to be a good friend, a counselor and a confessor.
