REMIGIO SERRA
Intorno alle 19,30 di domenica 7 febbraio 2016, a Londrina (Brasile) è morto P. Remigio Serra. Da qualche tempo andava visibilmente peggiorando a causa dei suoi vari problemi di salute.
Aveva 89 anni compiuti, essendo nato a Terralba (Cagliari – Italia) il 26.01.1927.
Remigio doveva diventare Gesuita. Dopo le Elementari e il triennio di Avviamento al lavoro a Terralba nel 1942 entrò come apostolino nella comunità dei Gesuiti di Cagliari dove frequentò il ginnasio inferiore. Passò quindi a Biella per il ginnasio superiore, conseguendo l’Ammissione al Liceo Classico.
Ma a quel punto i Superiori dissero a Remigio di rimanere a casa perché troppo avanti con l’età. Aveva vent’anni.
Dopo un anno trascorso in famiglia si aprì una nuova porta verso il presbiterato: fu accettato a Roma da un padre della congregazione di don Calabria, il quale raccoglieva ‘giovani anziani’ per prepararli al ministero ordinato.
Remigio non si trovò bene in questo gruppo e nel 1950 ottenne di essere nuovamente accolto dai Gesuiti. Era ospitato a Roma nella parrocchia di via Lucilio; lavorava e studiava filosofia all’Urbaniana. Nel 1953 conseguì la licenza, ma anche ne uscì provato nella salute. Dovette rinunciare al noviziato e ritornare in famiglia.
Ripresosi, bussò alla porta dei Saveriani: «Sono deciso di proseguire la strada intrapresa, solo perché tante anime attendono… so che il cammino è duro … spero che P. Antonio Ibba vorrà veramente fare il possibile per aiutarmi e faccia sì che mi sia aperta la porta d’entrata all’istituto».
Entrò tra i Saveriani a San Pietro in Vincoli nel 1957. «Ha fatto il suo Noviziato da uomo posato, senza grandi entusiasmi, ma anche senza tentennamenti» (Presentazione alla Professione). Il 21.12.1958 emise la Prima Professione. Passò quindi a Parma per gli studi di teologia. Il 15.10.1961 fu ordinato presbitero. Due mesi più tardi fece la Professione Perpetua che chiese così: «Sono venuto, ho visto, sono contento, ci voglio restare e perciò oso chiedere di emettere la Professione Perpetua per divenire definitivamente membro della Pia Società» (2.12.61).
Dopo l'ordinazione trascorse un anno a Glasgow (UK), studente di lingua inglese. Nel 1964 fu destinato al Brasile Sud, il campo di lavoro di tutta la sua vita. Nei cinquant’anni brasiliani P. Remigio ha visto il grande paese sudamericano uscire dal sottosviluppo e scalare le classifiche dell’economia mondiale. Mancando, però, l’obiettivo di un paese giusto e solidale. Ha visto la chiesa preconciliare e successivamente quella della teologia della liberazione, delle comunità di base e di un laicato sempre più coinvolto nelle attività pastorali.
Ha lavorato, per periodi più o meno lunghi, in diverse località. In particolare a Laranjeiras do Sul (66-72), Jaguapità (74-88) e Melo Viana e Coronel Fabriciano (92-07; 08-10).
A Laranjeiras do Sul, con i confratelli più vicini a 600 km e con strade fatiscenti «tornavamo a casa sempre sporchi da sembrare dei ‘pellirosse’ e ci volevano due giorni per riprendere la nostra fisionomia naturale» (MS nov 99). Nella pastorale si privilegiava la celebrazione dei sacramenti. Una scelta veramente impegnativa come rivela l’agenda di una normale domenica ordinaria: «Domani devo andare in una cappella. Mi attendono le confessioni, almeno un centinaio; i battesimi, una quindicina; e alla sera una Messa a Santa Mariana, dopo 45 chilometri di strada fangosa e in continuo saliscendi» (13.6.64). Confessava volentieri: «questo è un lavoro che mi piace… ridare la pace al prossimo , restituendo l’amicizia di Dio, mi pare la cosa più bella del mondo» (5.4.85).
A Jaguapità, fu economo e insegnante del Seminario minore saveriano e incaricato della comunità cristiana di Lupianopolis. Al riguardo, per incoraggiarlo, gli scriveva il Superiore Generale: «Una vita, quella del seminario, che qualche volta deve ben essere difficile, ma che è quella che è più vicina allo scopo per il quale siamo in Brasile: quello di svegliare la comunità ecclesiale ai suoi doveri missionari» (18.3.80).
A Melo Viana lavorò in una parrocchia di 60 mila anime, suddivisa in 26 comunità pastorali animate da numerosi gruppi di attività (Santa Infanzia, vocazionali, della San Vincenzo, della pastorale liturgica…). Era convinto che le comunità di base stavano ravvivando la chiesa brasiliana.
Dal 2010 era archivista della Circoscrizione; sempre più condizionato da problemi di salute.
E questo è il suo grazie per la vocazione ricevuta: «Il Signore mi ha chiamato per insegnare alle Genti a vedere Dio, cercare Dio, amare Dio. Così come praticava San Guido Maria Conforti. Grazie, Signore, per il servizio reso a te e ai fratelli» (2.10.11).

Fr. Remigio Serra died on 7 February 2016 in Londrina (Brazil). Born in Terralba (Cagliari, Italy), on 26 January 1927, he was 89 years old.
Fr. Remigio was supposed to become a Jesuit. After elementary school and a three-year work training course in Terralba, he joined the Jesuit community in Cagliari in 1942 as a junior seminarian, where he attended junior high school. He then moved to Biella for senior high school and qualified for admission to the Lyceum.
However, at that point his superiors told him to stay at home because of his age: he was twenty years old.
After a year at home with his family, a new path to the priesthood opened up for him: he was accepted in Rome by a priest of the Congregation of don Calabria (Poor Servants of Divine Providence), who was recruiting young candidates for the priesthood.
Remigio did not fit in with this group and was once again accepted by the Jesuits in 1950. He was a guest in a parish in Rome and studied Philosophy at the Pontifical Urbaniana University, where he obtained the Master’s degree in 1953, but health problems forced him to abandon the idea of Novitiate and he returned home to his family.
When his health improved he asked to join the Xaverians: «I am resolved to continue the journey I began because many souls are waiting for help … I know that the road will be difficult … I hope that Fr. Antonio Ibba can help me to join the Institute ».
He joined the Xaverians in San Pietro in Vincoli in 1957. The report presenting him to First Profession said: «He has completed his Novitiate as a steady and sensible man, without great enthusiasms or hesitations». He made his First Profession on 21 December 1958 and was sent to Parma to study Theology. He was ordained priest on 15 October 1961 and, two months later, he made his Final Profession. In his application he wrote: «I came, I saw and I am happy with the Xaverians. I wish to remain here and I ask to make my Final Profession in this Congregation » (2.12.61).
After his ordination he spent one year in Glasgow (UK) studying the English language. In 1964 he was assigned to South Brazil, which became his mission for the rest of his life. During 50 years in Brazil, Fr. Remigio saw the huge South American country emerge from underdevelopment, yet unable to become a country of justice and solidarity. He saw the pre-conciliar Church and the Church of Liberation Theology, in which the basic ecclesial communities and the laity became more and more involved in the pastoral activities.
He worked in different places for periods of varying durations: Laranjeiras do Sul (1966-72), Jaguapità (1974-88) and Melo Viana and Coronel Fabriciano (1992-2007; 2008-10).
At Laranjeiras do Sul, the nearest confreres were 600 kilometers away and the decrepit roads meant that they always returned home dirty. In the pastoral ministry priority was given to the celebration of the sacraments. The demanding nature of this work emerges clearly in the agenda of a normal Sunday: «Tomorrow I must go to one of the chapels where I will hear about 100 confessions and celebrate fifteen baptisms; in the evening I will celebrate Mass at Santa Mariana after a journey of 45 kilometers over muddy and winding roads» (13.6.64). He enjoyed hearing confessions: «… to help someone rediscover peace and restore them to God’s friendship is, I believe, the most beautiful thing in the world » (5.4.85).
At Jaguapità he served as treasurer and teacher at the minor Xaverian Seminary; he was also in charge of the Christian community of Lupianopolis. The Superior General wrote words of encouragement to him: «Seminary life is undoubtedly very difficult sometimes, but it is also the life closest to the purpose for which we are in Brazil: to awaken the ecclesial community to its missionary responsibilities» (18.3.80).
At Melo Viana he worked in a parish of 60, 000 people, which was subdivided into 26 pastoral communities and animated by numerous groups (Missionary Childhood, vocation groups, St. Vincent groups, liturgical groups …). He was convinced that the basic ecclesial communities were reawakening the Brazilian Church.
In 2010 he was put in charge of the Circumscription archives. At this time his health began to give him some problems.
He thus expressed his gratitude for his vocation: «The Lord called me to teach people to see, seek and love God, just as St. Guido Maria Conforti did. Thank you, Lord, for allowing me to serve you and others » (2.10.11).
