Missionario per vent'anni in Cina e quindi in Brasile. Di anni 72. Sepolto a Parma
Nacque a Salgareda (TV) il 15.IX.1901: compiuti gli studi ginnasiali, parte nel Seminario di Treviso e parte in quello di Montefiascone (VT), ove la famiglia si era trasferita a causa della prima guerra mondiale, entrava a 19 anni nell'Istituto Saveriano di Parma ove emise la Professione e venne ordinato Sacerdote da Mons. Conforti il 24.II.1927.
Venti giorni dopo, a 26 anni, partiva per la Cina con il P. Morazzoni. Lavorò a Cheng-chow e a Zou-chow. Superata la difficoltà dell'apprendimento della lingua, causata da uno studio iniziale fatto con interruzioni e poca sistematicità, egli divenne ben presto un missionario attivo, zelante, entusiasta della sua vocazione e del lavoro apostolico, piacevolissimo nella conversazione.
A causa dei briganti prima e della guerra cino-giapponese poi, ebbe diverse occasioni di sofferenza e tribolazione: egli le superò brillantemente, lasciando in proposito alcune testimonianze:
"Ormai sono in Cina da tre anni e, grazie a Dio, anche la lingua non mi è più così dura. Ma la situazione è sempre tesa: briganti in ogni buco. I soldati non se ne occupano. Vorrei uscire per i villaggi, ma le strade non sono sicure e bisogna attendere tempi migliori... Del resto vedo che del bene se ne può fare lo stesso. Lavoriamo, giriamo, predichiamo: basta un po' di zelo, buona volontà e gambe buone... È mia intenzione di far fare tutto ai cristiani, perché la chiesa deve essere opera loro..." (1935).
"Sono di nuovo al fiume Giallo per attendere il passaggio di 3500 profughi che, per i buoni uffici della Chiesa, hanno ottenuto il permesso di poter passare il fiume e tornare alle loro case dopo un anno di sofferenze e di stenti. È questa la quarta spedizione... È un lavoro che porta molte sofferenze: bisogna viaggiare, stare sulla riva del fiume esposti al sole, al vento, alla polvere gialla. Ma questi sacrifici li faccio volentieri" (1938).
Nel 1947 egli fu richiamato in Italia e destinato Rettore della Casa di Vicenza, succedendo al P. P. Uccelli..
Serbando profonda ed intensa nostalgia della Cina egli parlava spesso ai giovani studenti della sua esperienza missionaria, riuscendo a far rivivere il suo entusiasmo.
Terminato il sessenio di rettorato fu destinato alla Missione del Brasile, ove fu Superiore Religioso e poi Parroco, lavorando a Londrina, Laranjeiras e Warta.
Arrestato da una paralisi dovette abbandonare il Brasile e tornare in Italia. La malattia lo consumò lentamente giorno per giorno: egli accettò le sofferenze e le umiliazioni fino in fondo.
Si spense serenamente a Parma il 5.II.1973.

Fr. Giovanni Tonetto died on Feb. 5 1973 at the Mother House, following a stroke. He was 71 years old, born at Salvareda (Treviso) on Nov. 15 1901.
He entered the Xaverians at Parma when he was 19, following years of studies at the diocesan Seminaries of Treviso and Montefiascone (Viterbo) where his family had moved during World War I. He professed Religious Vows on Nov. 23 1921, and was ordained priest on Feb. 20 1927 by Bishop Conforti.
After 20 days of his Ordination Mass, he departed for China with Fr. A. Morazzoni on March 15 1927. He worked at Cheng-chow and at Zou-chow after difficulties of studying Chinese due to political instability and an inconsistent language program. He was soon an active and zealous missionary, enthused of his vocation and his apostolic work, and pleasing in conversation.
Fr. Tonetto encountered the difficulties of the brigands and the Chinese-Japanese war, with lots of pains and tribulations; yet, he overcame them quite fairly, as we read these reflections from him: "It's been three years since my arrival in China, and thanks to God, I can manage with the language now. But the surrounding situation is still tense, with brigands everywhere, and the soldiers who leave them alone. I would rather go to different villages, and visit the communities, but the roads are unsafe to travel, and so we wait for better days.
Nonetheless, we can do good things even where we are. We work, travel, preach: all we need is a bit of zeal, good will and strong legs. It ís my intention to let Christians do their homework, for the Church depends on them" (1935).
"I am by the banks of the Yellow River, waiting for the passage of more than 3,500 refugees who received the permit to cross over the river, thanks to the connections and work of the Church. They will return home after a year of suffering and in dire need. This is the fourth wave of refugees. It ís a painful and hard work, for we need to travel, be by the banks of the river under the scorching sun, the wind, and the yellow dust. Yet I do these sacrifices willingly." (1938)
In 1947 Fr. Tonetto is recalled back to Italy, as rector of the House of Vicenza, succeeding to Fr. P. Uccelli. His enthusiasm about his mission experience is contagious, as he shared it with the young students, even with a veil of intense nostalgia of the former days in China.
After his six years in Vicenza, Fr. Tonetto is assigned to Brazil on April 22 1954, where he served as Religious Superior, and then parish priest at Londrina, Laranjeiras and Warta. But, overtaken by a stroke, he accepted to return to Italy and to deal with the consuming painful and long experience of the disease until his last day on earth, Feb. 5 1973. He accepted everything with faith, with trust, and courage. May he rest in Peace.
