P. Giuliano Varalta

Il 9 dicembre 2013, a Parma in Casa Madre, intorno alle 15,20 si è spento il P. Giuliano Varalta. Lottava contro un tumore che in settembre lo aveva costretto a lasciare l’Indonesia e a rientrare in Italia.
Aveva 72 anni compiuti, essendo nato a Belfiore (Verona) il 1.2.1941.
La storia della vocazione di P. Giuliano iniziò con l’entrata nel Seminario diocesano a Verona nel 1951. Vi rimase otto anni (dalla preparatoria alla seconda liceo) durante i quali “sempre dimostrò retta intenzione, buona volontà, ottima pietà e carattere plasmabile per cui - come scrisse il Rettore – fu sempre ritenuto degno di essere incamminato al sacerdozio”.Nel Febbraio 1959 si mise in contatto con i ‘propagandisti’ Saveriani e dopo pochi mesi, settembre 1959, presentò domanda di diventare missionario.
Entrò all’Istituto a S. Pietro in Vincoli il 6.10.1959 e lo stesso giorno iniziò il Noviziato canonico.
Il 3.10.1960 emise la Prima Professione per la quale il P. Maestro espresse “un giudizio quasi molto favorevole: ... sempre pronto al lavoro ... bene per i voti religiosi che ama e per quello missionario che sente profondamente ...”. Passò quindi a Parma per la Propedeutica e, l’anno successivo, ad Alzano Lombardo per il prefettato. In questo ufficio incontrò una certa difficoltà e qualche disagio nelle relazioni comunitarie.
Tornato a Parma per la Teologia (62-66) non perse di vista questo aspetto della sua personalità. “... Negli ultimi due anni di teologia - si legge nella presentazione al Presbiterato - ha fatto notevoli progressi in meglio. Ha al suo attivo buone doti morali, come spirito di sacrificio, laboriosità, serietà di impegno nello studio e nell’adeguarsi alle esigenze della vocazione”.Fu ordinato presbitero a Parma il 17.10.1965.
Alla conclusione degli studi teologici fu inviato alla comunità di Macomer come insegnante e, l’anno successivo, come aiuto economo.
Nel marzo 1969 partì per l’Indonesia. Vi rimase sino alla vigilia della morte (1969-2013).
Si dedicò soprattutto alla pastorale. Operò come parroco o viceparroco a Bagangsiapi-Api (70-77), a Tanjung Balai (79-87), a Kisaran (87-99), a Aek Nabara (99-2001) e, dopo due anni di esclaustrazione nella diocesi di Medan, a Pekanbaru S. Maria (03-06) e S. Paulus (06-09) e a Padang.
“Come missionario – testimonia P. Peccati - fu pieno di zelo e di iniziative lungimiranti. Dovunque ha lavorato ha lasciato un segno ed è stato amato e apprezzato per il suo impegno pastorale indefesso”.Ebbe grande attenzione per i bambini non solo nell’ambito della liturgia e della catechesi ma anche per la loro istruzione. Tra l’altro ha realizzato per loro una scuola di informatica, dotata di 40 computer.
Effettivamente aveva il dono di trattare con i ragazzi. I Metodisti di Bagangsiapi-Api lo vollero insegnante di religione nella loro scuola.
“P. Giuliano - ha scritto P. G. Ferrari – fu un missionario zelante e un prete impegnato sia spiritualmente che intellettualmente. Ci teneva ad aggiornarsi in teologia e Sacra Scrittura ... Aveva l’animo di un mistico, di colui che cercava la presenza di Dio e ne coltivava le tracce sia in mezzo ai suoi tapanuli sia in mezzo ai musulmani di Sumatra del Nord”.
Certo P. Giuliano viveva bene da solo, verosimilmente per timidezza. Ma non ha mai rinunciato a superarsi. Nel 2004 scrisse al Superiore Generale: “Rinnovo il mio impegno a seguire le norme e lo spirito della Famiglia Saveriana nella misura delle mie capacità e dei miei limiti e sarò grato a quanti vorranno aiutarmi in questo cammino”. “Perché la vita comunitaria sia possibile – gli rispondeva il Superiore - è importante una corretta conoscenza delle proprie capacità e una accettazione dei propri limiti e dei limiti degli altri ... Dobbiamo convincerci che più siamo saveriani, più siamo missionari, perché questa è la modalità concreta alla quale il Signore ci ha chiamato alla missione”.
Che il Padrone della Messe lo accolga nel suo Regno.

Fr. Giuliano Varalta died in the Mother House, Parma, on 9 December 2013. He was suffering from cancer and had returned to Italy from Indonesia in September 2013. Born in Belfiore (Verona, Italy), on 1 February 1941, he was 72 years old.
The story of Fr. Giuliano’s vocation began with his entering the diocesan seminary of Verona in 1951. He studied there for eight years, during which time, in the words of his rector, “he always showed the right intention, good will, excellent piety and a flexible character; we look upon him as a worthy candidate for the priesthood”. In February 1959 he contacted the Xaverians and a few months later, in September 1959, he applied to join the Institute.
He joined the Institute at S. Pietro in Vincoli on 6 October 1959 and began Novitiate on the same day.
He made his First Profession on 3 October 1960. He had received a favorable report from the Novice Master: “a willing worker … he loves the vows and is deeply committed to them, especially the mission vow …”. He then moved to Parma for the Introductory year and, the following year, he was sent to Alzano Lombardo where he served as prefect. During this experience he experienced some difficulties, as well as some problems in the community relationships.
When he returned to Parma for theology (1962-66), he worked on this aspect of his personality. The report presenting him for the priesthood said: “… He has made considerable progress during the last two years of theology. He possesses good moral qualities, such as a spirit of sacrifice, industriousness, serious application to study and the demands of his vocation”. He was ordained priest in Parma on 17 October 1965.
Upon conclusion of his theological studies he was sent to the community of Macomer to teach; the following year he was appointed assistant treasurer.
He left for Indonesia in March 1969 and remained there until shortly before his death (1969-2013).
He worked above all in the pastoral ministry: parish priest or assistant parish priest at Bagangsiapi-Api (1970-77), Tanjung Balai (1979-87), Kisaran (1987-99), Aek Nabara (1999-2001) and, after two years of exclaustration in the diocese of Medan, at Pekanbaru S. Maria (2003-06) and S. Paulus (2006-09) and Padang.
In the words of Fr. Peccati: “As a missionary he was full of zeal and far-seeing initiatives. Wherever he worked he left his mark and he was loved and appreciated for his untiring pastoral commitment”.
He took great care of the children, not only in the area of liturgy and catechesis, but also their instruction. Among other things, he provided a computer school for children with 40 computers. He was so gifted in dealing with children that the Methodists of Bagangsiapi-Api wanted him to teach religion in their schools.
Fr. G. Ferrari writes: “Fr. Giuliano was a zealous missionary and a dedicated priest, both spiritually and intellectually. He made a point of keeping up to date with theology and Sacred Scripture … He had the heart of a mystic, of one who searched for God’s presence and cultivated it both among his tapanuli and among the Muslims of North Sumatra”.
Fr. Giuliano was undoubtedly happy to live alone, most likely because of his timidity. Yet he never gave up on his efforts to improve himself. In 2004 he wrote to the Superior General: “I renew my commitment to follow the norms and the spirit of the Xaverian Family to the extent that my abilities and my limits allow, and I will be grateful to anyone who is willing to help me in this endeavor”. The Superior replied: “In order to ensure that community life is possible, we must have an accurate knowledge of our personal abilities and accept our personal limits and those of others … We must convince ourselves that the more we are Xaverians, the more we are missionaries, because this is the specific way in which the Lord has called us to the mission”.
